More than 100 people on Canadian chartered flight leaving Middle East tonight: Anand

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand speaks to reporters in The Hague, Netherlands on June 24, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says a Canadian chartered flight will leave Jordan this evening with more than 100 people on board. Speaking from The Hague, Anand says Canada is also helping allied nations get their citizens out of the Middle East but adds the number of foreign nationals asking for help is 'minimal' compared to the number of Canadians. Global Affairs Canada deployed more consular assistance to the region after war broke out between Israel and Iran last week. Anand says Global Affairs Canada has helped more than 500 Canadians in the region since the conflict began. She adds that Canada has ground transportation available to help get Canadians out of Israel to a neighbouring country, now that Israeli airspace is closed. Canada has not had a diplomatic presence in Iran since 2012 and consular services are made available through Turkey. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 24, 2025. Panama and Venezuela to restore consular services in each other's countries

PANAMA CITY — Panama and Venezuela will restore consular services in each other's countries in the coming days, Panama's Foreign Affairs Ministry said late Thursday, nearly a year after Panama suspended them following questionable Venezuelan elections that reelected President Nicolás Maduro. 'Due to the imperative need to attend to the consular issues of their citizens,' the two countries agreed to reactivate their consular services, the ministry said in a statement.

Panama and Venezuela to restore consular services in each other's countries

PANAMA CITY (AP) — Panama and Venezuela will restore consular services in each other's countries in the coming days, Panama's Foreign Affairs Ministry said late Thursday, nearly a year after Panama suspended them following questionable Venezuelan elections that reelected President Nicolás Maduro. 'Due to the imperative need to attend to the consular issues of their citizens,' the two countries agreed to reactivate their consular services, the ministry said in a statement. The diplomatic break came July 29, 2024, when Panama pulled its diplomats from Caracas and announced it was suspending relations with Venezuela. It followed elections the day before in which the opposition declared fraud and offered evidence that Maduro had been roundly defeated. Panama President José Raúl Mulino gave his support to the Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who had visited Panama weeks earlier. Venezuela suspended flights between both countries, including those by Panamanian national carrier Copa Airlines. Flights were reestablished May 22 this year. Panama had also insisted that Venezuela agree to receive migrants from its country moving south through Panama, but there was no mention of that issue in Thursday's statement.
