USDA Announces Recall of More Than 140,000 Pounds of Deli Meat

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a recall on 143,416 pounds of Gaiser's European Style Provisions Inc. deli meat products due to mislabeling. The recalled ready-to-eat bologna products may contain other meat or poultry "source materials" that are not mentioned on the product labels. The bologna products were recalled because the label does not clearly indicate that the meat contains pork—or, in some cases, beef and chicken. The issue was discovered after a complaint was filed via the Office of Inspector General's hotline. The bologna was sold under multiple brand names at wholesale and retail locations between March 20 and June 20. FSIS has not received any reports of illnesses or adverse effects associated with eating the bologna and has classified this recall as Class III, indicating that "use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences." However, if you have the recalled bologna—or you purchased bologna from a deli counter between March 20 and June 20 and it does not clearly state the brand name—you should not consume it.
