NFL star drops bombshell trade hint and hits out at his team after missing out on the Super Bowl last season
Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin has dropped a bombshell trade hint amid his contract standoff with the NFL side. McLaurin - who is viewed as one of the best wide receivers in the league - is entering the final year of his current deal with the Commanders, which he signed in 2022. The former Ohio State star has been a mainstay in the side since being drafted in 2019 but notably elevated his game last year, despite missing out on the Super Bowl. As a result, McLaurin, 29, feels as though he's done enough to earn a new deal and made that clear as he spoke to press on Tuesday afternoon. He said: 'I've been pretty frustrated, I'm not going to lie. Everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. 'I want to continue my career here. I've created my life here. My wife and I bought our first home here. This has been somewhere I've always wanted to be'. He later added: 'Without any progressive discussions, it's hard to see me stepping on the field.' McLaurin, 29, did not take part in the Commanders' minicamp in an attempt to make a statement to franchise chiefs over his contract impasse. Last season, McLaurin exploded into life and produced 1,096 receiving yards paired with a career-high 13 touchdowns for the Commanders. Despite the impressive performances, the franchise narrowly missed out on a place in the Super Bowl after losing the NFC Championship Game to the Philadelphia Eagles. McLaurin's bombshell statement comes just one day after New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached an agreement over a new four-year, $130million deal. For context, McLaurin signed a three-year contract extension worth $71 million - with a $28 million signing bonus - back in 2022. Wilson's new deal, which will see him bank an estimated $90m guaranteed, makes him the first receiver in NFL history to earn an average of over $31m per year after playing only three seasons in the league. ESPN was first to break the news of the 24-year-old's extension, which keeps him with the Jets through 2030. Wilson is gearing up for his fourth season in New York after being selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2022 draft.

While some heat gets directed at Stewart himself for not putting ink to paper and practicing with his teammates, the Bengals' long history of contractual issues (never mind the current issue with Trey Hendrickson) continues to put them under fire. 'No matter who it was, doing this with a guy that you drafted in the first round is dumb on its own,' Mays said. 'The guy, who is the rawest player that you could have drafted in the first round, not getting every single rep in practice in a season where, again, you justifiably want to win your division and want to win playoff games, is very frustrating.' For whatever reason, the Bengals decided right now was the time to reset contract precedent when it comes to the voiding of guarantees. That, again, despite the Hendrickson contract standoff. Advertisement And that, despite how important it is to improve the defense around the youth movement directed by Al Golden, never mind Mays' commentary about Stewart being a raw prospect. Were this not the Bengals and the above not sticking out, perhaps Stewart's saga doesn't get as much national coverage. But the fact he wasn't even practicing was unusual, which has thrown the Bengals under the microscope. New layer to Shemar Stewart, Bengals drama possibly emerges
When it comes to the Shemar Stewart contract standoff with the Cincinnati Bengals, there are layers…to say the least. Layers, like the many reported instances of Stewart and his camp being asked by the Bengals to accept being the first to reset their contractual language when it comes to voidance of guarantees. Advertisement As it turns out, there's another layer: The possible reason Stewart didn't sign standard injury waivers like other unsigned draft picks around the league and practice with his team is due to Cincinnati's participation agreement. RELATED: Cincinnati Bengals' 53-man roster projection following 2025 offseason Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk compared the Bengals' contractual language about participation agreements to that of one other team and came away unimpressed: 'In Stewart's case, a participation agreement that would have more clearly promised to give him the financial package he would have gotten without the injury would have gotten him on the field for the offseason program — and it would have deferred the thornier issue of working out final contract language until training camp.' Advertisement Some of the very specific languages comes down to ambiguity and it is an incredibly small sample size. That said, on one hand, it's easy to see why an agent could balk at the language. On the other, it hasn't seemed to be a red flag for other Bengals rookies historically (provided it's not also brand new). Regardless of the reason, Stewart choosing not to participate while attending spring work when many rookies in similar positions did around the league was a risky roll of the dice given the developmental reps needed after entering the NFL perceived as a project. Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart escalates contract standoff with team
Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Shemar Stewart went very public and escalated his contract standoff with the team at the onset of mandatory camp this week. Speaking with reporters about his dissatisfaction with his contract standoff, Stewart said he was disappointed with how the Bengals are handling the whole situation and remained adamant that he won't practice until his rookie deal gets signed. Advertisement "I'm 100% right. It should be a no-brainer," Stewart said. "In Trey's case it should be a no brainer, too. … "I'm not asking for nothing y'all have never done before. So, too, is Stewart not at least practicing while the contract stuff gets handled in the background, as most first-round picks do/are.
