Abu Al-Madafa caves reveal Red Sea wonders
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia's coasts feature dozens of ancient sea caves that contain diverse marine life, attracting diving and water sports enthusiasts from around the world. Among them, the Abu Al-Madafa caves north of Jeddah are known for their clear waters, deep caverns and colorful coral reefs. They are a popular spot for divers, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Located just a 30-minute boat ride away from Jeddah, the caves offer narrow underwater passages filled with marine life. Reaching depths of up to 60 meters, the site includes rich coral formations, the SPA added. Moderate currents allow for clear visibility, drawing experienced divers to see tuna, barracuda, blacktip and whitetip sharks, and various reef fish. The biodiversity offers a close look at Red Sea marine ecosystems.

Safer Sunscreens: Selecting Healthy and Reef-Safe Products
Choosing sunscreen that is healthy and reef-safe can be challenging. As summer temperatures soar and we flock to beaches, pools, and outdoor recreation areas, choosing the right sunscreen is important but challenging. On one hand, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 100,000 Americans will be diagnosed with invasive melanoma in 2025. On the other hand, some sunscreen ingredients are linked to hormone disruption and other health harms. And then there's the fact that approximately 14,000 tons of sunscreen wash into coral reefs annually, contributing to the destruction of marine ecosystems. How can our sunscreen choices balance these concerns? Mineral Sunscreens Are Safer Than Chemical Sunscreens Under current FDA guidelines, only two active ingredients are classified as "Generally Recognized As Safe and Effective" (GRASE): zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These mineral-based compounds work by creating a physical barrier on the skin that reflects and scatters ultraviolet radiation away from the body. In contrast, the FDA has requested additional safety data for 12 chemical sunscreen ingredients, including avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene. This is because there is growing evidence that these chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and may pose health risks. Mineral sunscreens are also more reef-safe. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, two of the most common chemical sunscreen ingredients, have been identified as primary drivers of coral bleaching, a process that strips corals of their life-sustaining algae and leaves them vulnerable to disease and death. These chemicals also disrupt the endocrine systems and brains of fish. Mineral-based alternatives like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide pose no known harm to coral reefs or other marine life. Sunscreen Lotions Are Safer Than Sprays And Mists While spray sunscreens are convenient, they may be the worst choice for both human health and the environment. This is because aerosol delivery systems release significant quantities of sunscreen into the air rather than onto skin. These airborne particles can travel considerable distances before settling on surfaces, potentially contaminating areas far from where we applied the sunscreen. When used near beaches, lakes, or other water bodies, spray sunscreens directly introduce chemicals into aquatic environments without the intermediate step of skin contact. There is also a risk of inadvertent inhalation of spray sunscreen particles, especially when products are used on children. Additionally, achieving adequate coverage with spray formulations proves challenging, often resulting in uneven protection and increased sunburn risk. Picking The Best Sunscreens How can you tell which sunscreens are safe for your health and for reefs? Check the label. Ocean Day 2025: Sustaining The Wonder That Sustains Us
On June 8th, we celebrate World Oceans Day under the global theme: 'Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.' The ocean covers 70% of the Earth's surface and is not only vast but vital for the existence of life. According to the United Nations News, the ocean produces over 50% of the planet's oxygen, absorbs 25% of human-generated carbon dioxide, and regulates climate patterns critical to life. Beyond threats, the ocean harbors breathtaking wonders. Scientists estimate that over 80% of the ocean remains unexplored, according to National Geographic. Another beautiful wonder is that the Mariana Trench plunges deeper than Mount Everest is tall and is filled with a host of mysterious and unique sea creatures. Coral reefs, often called the 'rainforests of the sea,' support 25% of marine life despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. Even more astonishing, the largest migration on Earth occurs daily as deep-sea creatures rise to the surface under cover of night to make their way to other areas. These are some of the beautiful wonders that require our mindfulness and protection and of course changed habits. Despite its importance, the ocean is under unprecedented stress and the UN Trade & Development reports that nearly 90% of global fish stocks are exploited or depleted. Coupled with this sea surface temperatures have risen by nearly 1°C since pre-industrial times, contributing to coral bleaching events and extreme weather. Pollution is another grave concern. According to the World Economic Forum, 6 million metric tons of plastic leak into the rivers and coastlines every year. Without intervention, this figure could triple by 2040. Meanwhile, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns that by 2050, plastics could outweigh fish in the oceans. While the ocean is a filled with mysteries, wonder must fuel our action. Oman marks World Oceans Day, renews pledge to protect marine environment
Muscat - On the occasion of World Oceans Day (which falls on 8 June every year), the Sultanate of Oman highlights efforts on protecting the marine environment and promoting ecological sustainability. Oman is considered a leading country in this field. Oman boasts a long coastline of approximately 3,165 kilometres that makes the country home to a rich biodiversity of coral reefs, seabirds, fish and rare and endangered species like sea turtles. Oman is actively seeking to preserve its marine environment through a set of elaborate initiatives and policies. The Environment Authority was established to act as the body responsible for developing environmental strategies, notably in the field of protecting oceans and coasts. The Environment Authority conducts studies and research aimed at understanding common environmental challenges posed by the marine environment like pollution, overfishing and climate change. As part of its efforts to promote marine sustainability, Oman keeps implementing a variety of projects, including the "Artificial Coral Reefs" project, which aims to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, enhance biodiversity, support sustainable fishing and protect coastal areas. Oman has also established a number of marine reserves like Ras Al Jinz Marine Reserve, the Daymaniyat Islands Marine Reserve, and Al Khor Marine Reserve, which all provide safe sanctuary for endangered marine species. Oman's efforts also include awareness campaigns and workshops aimed at raising and developing the knowledge of citizens and residents about the importance of preserving marine life. In particular, such initiatives target younger generations, encouraging them to actively contribute to environment conservation efforts. Oman also accords attention to international cooperation in the field of marine environment protection. This attention takes shape in Oman's regular participation in relavamt global programmes and agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity. Through this comprehensive approach,—which combines effective policies, innovative projects and community engagement—the Sultanate of Oman sets an exemplary model for marine environment protection.
