Hong Kong cricketer Rath on lasting England regret and overcoming India rejection
Anshuman Rath said he had 'still not fully got over' the collapse of his English county cricket dream eight years ago, and considered walking away from the game entirely when his time in India turned sour. Hong Kong will be happy he did not. The opening batsman has been a mainstay in the city side since his return, having rediscovered his joy in the game. And it is a very different Rath to the one who expected to join Middlesex in 2017, only to fall foul of visa regulations after five years living in the UK. Two years later he found himself in India, where after three years of ups and downs he returned to Hong Kong 'overweight and ready to move on with life'. 'What could have been lingers in my mind,' Rath said. 'It wasn't meant to be, but when I see mates I grew up with playing county cricket, it hurts a bit.' Anshuman Rath (right) makes his ground amid a run-out appeal from Uganda wicketkeeper Fred Achelam. Lancashire's Croft questions 'stupid' schedule
Lancashire interim head coach Steven Croft has questioned county cricket's schedule following back-to-back T20 Blast Lightning played Northamptonshire Steelbacks away on Friday night and only arrived back to their Emirates Old Trafford base at 3:45am because of motorway hold-ups. Less less than 12 hours later, they were back in action at home to Derbyshire Falcons on Saturday managed to win both games to move to the top of North Group, but Liam Livingstone and Saqib Mahmood picked up injuries."It was a bit of a late one, I think we probably got into bed at half four," Croft told BBC Radio Lancashire."They're some of the world's best players and I think to ask them to get out there within 11 hours of a game finishing, it feels pretty stupid and silly." The two games were the start of a run of seven in 15 days to complete Lancashire's T20 group have further fixtures on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday before finishing with trips to Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire Outlaws next Thursday and Friday Red Rose are well placed to progress to the knockout stages, but Croft is concerned about the demands being placed on the pulled up during his innings of 35 and needed a runner, while Mahmood went off after bowling three overs."Putting the players at risk, we saw two players walk off the field through injury, which is never nice to see," he said. "But I think it's such an easy fix in my eyes and other people's."It's a bit of a bridge too far to ask the lads to go out with such a quick turnaround. It's a bit of a mess but it is what it is." 'Minimal sleep and quick turnaround' Cricket's domestic calendar is crowded with the Championship and the T20 Blast this month before August is given over to The Hundred and the One-Day everything in represents a huge challenge but Croft believes spectators will lose out if the best players are not properly looked after. "It's something that seriously needs to be looked at," said Croft, who stepped in as interim head coach following the departure of Dale Benkenstein. "One of those players might be off that field for a bit of a while and I wouldn't say that's all down to the schedule, but it's not helped one bit for that player who's walked off."Liam's hamstring might have gone at any time, but getting minimal sleep and such a quick turnaround to playing elite sport is a tough one."

Wayne ‘Ned' Larkins obituary: maverick batsman for England and Northamptonshire
In an age when opening batsmen were expected to wear down the new ball attack and refrain from attempting any expansive shots until the shine had been seen off, the opposition feared the maverick strokemaker. They fretted in particular that, in the phrase coined by Jonathan Agnew, the fast bowler turned BBC cricket correspondent, they would be 'nedded' by the gifted Wayne Larkins in county or Test cricket. 'Ned', as he was known, was an opener who would hit the first ball of a match not merely through the cover fielders but over their heads for six. 'He did this to me and smiled back,' Agnew said. Had Larkins played under the current England management, who favour quick scoring, he would have made more than his 13 Test appearances and been in demand from franchise leagues all over the world.

Surrey post 820-9 against Durham to break 126-year-old club record
July 1 (Reuters) - Surrey broke a 126-year-old club record when they posted their highest total in a county cricket match on Monday, declaring their first innings at 820-9 against Durham on the second day of their County Championship clash at the Oval in London. Dom Sibley scored 305 while fellow England internationals Sam Curran (108), Dan Lawrence (178) and Will Jacks (119) pitched in with centuries as Surrey improved on their previous record of 811 scored against Somerset in 1899 at the same venue. Yorkshire's total of 887 against Warwickshire in 1896 remains the highest total in county cricket, with Surrey's record the fourth-highest in the list.

Durham v Sussex, Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire and more: county cricket day four
Update: Date: 2025-06-25T09:31:26.000Z Title: Tuesday's round-up Content: Lancashire accelerated flamboyantly at Blackpool, the tower peering curiously around the clubhouse as Ashton Turner (154 on debut), Josh Bohannon (124) , Luke Wells (152) and Michael Jones (a preppy 41) peppered the boundaries. Two balls were lost over the wall and into trees, one landed dangerously near the two shiny red showroom cars parked on the top of the grassy bank as Kent conceded 639, the highest total in matches between the sides. Surrey strode into June by dispatching Worcestershire in two-and-a-half days. Nathan Smith – six for 38 – and Matt Fisher – four for 47 – nipped them out for 125, leaving Surrey 49 to win. They sit, temporarily at least, back at the top of Division One. Jacob Bethell had time to hit an effortless six on his return to county cricket, before he was sent on his way, bottom-edging a pull for 20. Warwickshire just avoided the follow-on against Somerset, and the game seems destined for a draw. Tilak Varma's century on debut and Liam Dawson's hundred and double-wicket day put Hampshire on top against Essex, despite Simon Harmer's 500th wicket for Essex. Gurinder Sandhu, Sussex's 6ft 4in fast bowler, collected five wickets on a damp day at Chester le Street, as Durham lost their last four wickets for 26. Jofra Archer added four overs to his comeback campaign. Runaway Leicestershire declared with a lead of 223 over Glamorgan, after some hearty bat swinging from Logan van Beek and Ben Green, though a defiant 72 not out from Sam Northeast took the game into day four. Finlay Bean's 224 helped Yorkshire fight back against Notts. Gloucestershire fought back against Derbyshire thanks to an all day unbeaten 170 from Cameron Bancroft and 105 from Graeme van Buuren. Middlesex's Ryan Higgins grabbed a hat-trick against Northants, after Saif Zaib reached his fourth century of the summer.
