'Heartbreaking moment': Saudia plane diverted to Cairo after crew member dies onboard

A tragedy unfolded in the skies on Thursday aboard a Saudia flight departing from Jeddah, when a crew member suffered a sudden medical emergency that resulted in his death. Saudia flight SV119, en route to London, was diverted to Cairo following the onboard medical emergency. Sadly, the cabin manager, Mohsen bin Saeed Alzahrani, was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Saudi carrier took to X to mourn its staff member saying: "Despite the immediate and valiant efforts of fellow crew members and medically licensed individuals onboard, he was pronounced deceased upon the aircraft's arrival at Cairo International Airport." Describing the event as "a heartbreaking moment in which we lost one of our most dedicated team members", it went on to say that Alzahrani was "a shining example of commitment and discipline, admired by his peers for his integrity, professionalism, and high moral character". Saudia extended its condolences to his family and fellow team members, stressing that it is committed to providing all the necessary support to his family and everyone affected by his loss. Commending on the flight crew's "remarkable courage and professionalism in managing the situation and ensuring the continuation of the journey under exceptional circumstances", the airline also thanked the travellers for their understanding and cooperation during this ordeal. Sudden deaths mid-flight often result in flight diversions and emergency landings. In October 2024, a Turkish Airlines pilot died after collapsing mid-flight, forcing the Turkish national carrier to make an emergency landing in New York. In another incident, a flydubai flight from Dubai to Dhaka was diverted to Karachi in February 2023, after a passenger passed away during the journey.

Call The Midwife 'to end after 15 series as the cast of long-running BBC drama begin to film final scenes'

Beloved BBC series Call The Midwife will reportedly come to a close with its 15th series this year. The heartwarming show first aired in 2012 and has since put out 14 series, totalling to more than 100 episodes following the nurses and nuns in Poplar. A Christmas special for this year has already been announced, with the cast currently at work filming for series 15 to air next year. However, according to The Daily Star, the season will be the show's last, as bosses want the popular drama to 'go out on a high'. A source told the publication: 'After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end. The team have decided it's time to draw the show to a close and bow out. 'This is the last we'll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends. It's a bittersweet time for the cast and crew. They're all sad it's coming to an end, but they want to make sure the show gets the ending it deserves.' However, the insider teased that there could be a special return episode one day in the future, saying: 'The writers are also open to the idea of reviving Call The Midwife for a special one day in the future. It's a case of never say never.' Earlier this year, the show's creator, Heidi Thomas hinted the longstanding drama may take a break from production in the future. She told Radio Times in February: 'Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives. 'I don't believe Call the Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.' The screenwriter added that there was an 'ongoing conversation' each year where they discuss if there is an 'end point' to the show and what they want to 'work towards'. 'So if we do take a break, it will be with a view to looking at other aspects of Call the Midwife,' Heidi explained, before hinting that a spin-off may be on the cards too. In May, the BBC confirmed a two-part Call The Midwife Christmas special is being prepared and will be set in Hong Kong and the East End. It will be followed by eight new hour-long episodes from January 2026 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The new instalments will launch into 1971 and the nurses will tackle several issues including 'premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis and slavery'. At the start, senior members of the Nonnatus House staff head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission. While they're away, the younger midwives are left to help the local community alone. Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) experiences a huge change in mindset and the 'energy reverberates throughout series 15'. What's more, the women's liberation movement is in full swing and several ladies burn their bras outside of the convent. In another treat for viewers, a Call The Midwife film is also set to be produced and will be based in 1972. While a prequel series is also in the works for next year and will dive into the streets of Poplar during World War Two. Speaking about the prequel, Heidi said: 'The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right. 'I have never run out of stories for our midwives, and I never will. But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past.' She reflected how the East End during the Blitz was 'extraordinary' and 'filled with loss, togetherness, courage and joy'. Heidi added: 'The bombs fell, the babies kept on coming, and the Sisters kept on going.' The writer teased what was in store for the prequel and said: 'There will be so much in the prequel for our wonderful, loyal fans, including the appearance of some familiar (if much younger!) faces. 'As the classic Call the Midwife series moves further into the 1970s, it also seems the perfect time for our much-loved regulars to take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape. 'The rise in hospital births, and changes in the NHS, have clipped their wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters. 'Whilst the location of the film remains top-secret, I can say it is going to look absolutely fantastic on the big screen!' Beeb boss Lindsay Salt described the show as a 'jewel in the BBC's crown'. While executive producer Dame Pippa Harris added: 'In an increasingly competitive viewing environment not only have our loyal fans stayed with us for 14 years, but they've been joined by a new, younger generation who have also fallen in love with our characters and the challenges they face. 'Emboldened by this warmth and enthusiasm, now feels like the right time to expand our world and take our nuns and midwives onto the big screen with our movie, and back in time with the prequel!' More information about the upcoming film and prequel series are set to be released later in the year.

Mutiny breaks out on Russian battleship Potemkin – archive, June 1905

29 June 1905 The news from Odesa yesterday is fresh proof of the utter absence of discipline in what remains of the Russian navy. The crew of the great battleship Kniaz Potemkin have mutinied and attacked the officers. Telegrams from Odesa to Washington, St Petersburg, and other places speak of the whole of the officers of the vessel as murdered. The only doubt arises from the fact that Reuters' correspondent at Odesa does not confirm this, but mentions an unconfirmed report that several officers have been killed. As, however, the crew are apparently masters both of themselves and of the battleship, and are compelling the crews of steamers in the harbour to cease work, it seems that the majority of the officers must have been killed. The remainder of the Black Sea Fleet is expected at Odesa. The mutineers may either take to the land and endeavour to escape, or may face the other ships of the squadron. They could offer no real resistance to the seven battleships which could be brought against them, but since the crews of the whole fleet mutinied only seven months ago it is open to doubt whether their comrades would fire on them. A solution consistent with the traditions of the Black Sea Fleet would be that the mutineers should return quietly to their duties when they think fit and the authorities punish them at some future date if they think themselves strong enough. Continue reading. 6 July 1905 The Kniaz Potemkin has reappeared at Theodosia, in the Crimea. A proclamation to foreign powers, drawn up by the mutineers, states that a decisive struggle against the Russian government has begun, and also that foreign shipping and ports in the Black Sea will be held inviolate. Two torpedo craft, manned almost entirely by officers, are now reported to be in pursuit of the Potemkin, which will probably be able to obtain coal and provisions at Theodosia. The rebel crews are living from hand-to-mouth, but can apparently terrorise the coast towns, into supplying them with provisions; if the pursuing warships do not discover and defeat them it should soon be seen whether the threat of war against loyal Russian shipping is actually to be carried out. In St Petersburg the assistance of the Cossacks has been called in once more to disperse strikers; volleys have been fired, and several casualties are reported. Potemkin at Theodosia The rebel battleship Kniaz Potemkin has arrived, and has asked for coal and provisions and a doctor. The mutineers have demanded from the town authorities a guarantee of their safety during their stay. According to the latest reports, the Kniaz Potemkin appeared off Akkerman, west of Odesa, on Monday, and sent a torpedo boat into the harbour to demand coal and provisions. The authorities refused to furnish these, whereupon the torpedo boat fired two shots, and subsequently obtained all the supplies it required. 10 July 1905 The Kniaz Potemkin surrendered on Saturday to the Romanian authorities at Kustenji. Their leaders, it is stated, wished to blow up the ship, but the other mutineers were ready to accept the Romanian terms. They will be taken to the Romanian frontier and may go where they please. The Potemkin has been handed over to Admiral Kruger, who arrived at Kustenji on Saturday in pursuit of the mutineers. The torpedo boat which has accompanied the Potemkin in its wanderings declined to surrender and left Kustenji. The crew declared that they had only followed the Potemkin under compulsion. Seven officers were found to have been kept prisoners on the battleship. Sign up to This is Europe The most pressing stories and debates for Europeans – from identity to economics to the environment after newsletter promotion A serious outbreak is reported from some of the naval barracks in St Petersburg. The disorders in the south of Russia have been checked for the present, but from Warsaw and from the town of Makareff, which lies to the north-east of Moscow, come familiar reports of strikes and rioting and pillaging of shops. 10 July 1905 Kustenji I have just paid a visit to the Kniaz Potemkin. I found everything on board in a state of wild disorder notwithstanding the efforts made since yesterday by Romanian soldiers to put things shipshape. The officers' cabins especially have been pillaged and simply cleared of everything worth taking. There are bloodstains everywhere. During the last few days the Kniaz Potemkin was commanded by two of her engineers and one officer, who were compelled to navigate the ship with revolvers at their heads. There was sufficient ammunition on board to enable the mutineers to make a desperate resistance, and hold their own in a great engagement. Numerous ikons were everywhere in evidence. While I was on board an order was received from the king of Romania to hand over the ship to Admiral Kruger without raising any difficulty. After an exchange of signals the Admiral came on board to take possession. A Russian priest who was in the ship first held a religious service, and an hour later the Romanian officials formally handed over the battleship to the Russian Admiral.
