Ramaphosa must act on police scandal: parliamentary portfolio committee chair Ian Cameron

Cameron welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa's pledge to address the issue but urged urgent action on his return from Brazil. 'Accountability is necessary and people deserve to know and feel that the SA Police Service is made of men and women who are ready to serve in the interest of the country and not for selfish reasons,' Cameron said. The committee is demanding urgent lifestyle and skills audits of senior police management and has called for a parliamentary debate on police integrity and its impact on crime-fighting efforts. It has written to the speaker to summon key figures to give account. 'Those dockets [that Mkhwanazi mentioned] or the process regarding them should be frozen until an independent inquiry can be done. I think it is a massive risk to just leave them in the system after what we heard yesterday [Sunday]' Cameron said.

Mkhwanazi's bombshell: ANC urges Ramaphosa to act on 'grave' allegations

The ANC has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently address the 'grave' allegations levelled by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against police minister Senzo Mchunu. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the claims, which touch on state integrity and the fight against crime, must be investigated thoroughly to protect South Africa from descending into lawlessness. On Sunday, Mkhwanazi made damning allegations against Mchunu, accusing the minister of interfering with police investigations and being an associate of people with questionable characters. In a media briefing, Mbalula said the allegations touch on the very integrity of the criminal justice system, and the constitutional obligation of the state to protect all South Africans. 'We call upon Ramaphosa to act with the seriousness and urgency this matter demands. The ANC reaffirms its commitment to accountability, non-interference in law enforcement, and the full protection of whistle-blowers, investigators and officers of the law,' Mbalula said.

Scrap non-crime hate incidents to protect free speech, Tories say

The Tories are pushing to scrap non-crime hate incidents to prevent frontline officers 'wasting time on this Orwellian nonsense' and prioritise fighting crime. Non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) were introduced after the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence to monitor situations that could escalate into more serious harm or show heightened community tensions. But increasingly they have been used to record petty arguments and trivial incidents. In November The Times revealed how a nine-year-old was subject to a NCHI after calling a classmate a 'retard'. It was among at least 13,200 NCHIs logged by 45 police forces in the year to June 2024, according to data obtained under Freedom of Information laws. An amendment to Labour's Crime and Policing Bill will seek to block police forces keeping
