Suspect in Los Angeles car-ramming incident has a criminal history and was on parole, police say
Los Angeles Vehicle into Crowd LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man suspected of driving his car into a crowd on a sidewalk in Los Angeles, injuring 36 people, has a criminal history that includes a conviction for felony battery, officials said Sunday. The driver, identified by police as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, was attacked by bystanders after the crash early Saturday in east Hollywood and paramedics later found that he had been shot. Police were still searching for the suspected shooter, described as a man with a goatee in a blue Dodgers jacket. Ramirez, of San Clemente, California, was recovering and was expected to face a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He could not be reached for comment and it wasn't known if he had an attorney. Los Angeles police Capt. Ben Fernandes told KNBC-TV on Sunday that Ramirez was sentenced in 2020 for attacking a man outside of a Whole Foods grocery store in June 2019. He was on parole at the time of Saturday's crash, but it's unclear whether it was in connection with the 2019 attack or another case. Ramirez has had at least 11 criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies, KNBC reported. In January 2022, he was charged with felony domestic battery and entered a not guilty plea. That case remains open. A line of people — mostly women — were waiting to enter the Vermont Hollywood event venue around 2 a.m. when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a food vending cart and valet stand, Fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen said Saturday. At least 36 people were treated for injuries including fractures and lacerations, police said Sunday without providing updates on their conditions. It was not immediately clear if Ramirez was shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd. Solve the daily Crossword

Car strikes crowd outside Los Angeles venue, injuring 30. Bystanders attack driver, who was shot
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A vehicle rammed into a crowd of people waiting to enter a performance venue along a busy boulevard in Los Angeles early Saturday, injuring 30 people and leading bystanders to attack the driver, authorities said. The driver was later found to have been shot, according to police, who were searching for a suspected gunman who fled the scene along Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood. It was not immediately clear if the driver was shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd, a police spokesperson said. Twenty-three victims were taken to hospitals and trauma centers, according to police. Seven were in critical condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement. Fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen said a line of people — mostly female — were waiting to enter Vermont Hollywood when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a food vending cart and valet stand. 'This was a very chaotic scene,' said VanGerpen, a public information officer. People inside came out to help victims in the minutes before emergency crews arrived, he said. The driver, whose gunshot wound was found by paramedics, was also taken to a hospital. Police did not identify him or disclose his condition. The person suspected of shooting him was described as a man in a blue jersey with a silver revolver. 'This is under police investigation,' VanGerpen said. 'This will be a large investigation with the LAPD.' Vermont Hollywood was hosting a reggae-hip hop event from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to its online calendar. There was no immediate response to a phone message left with the business. A fight broke out outside the venue beforehand, according to Maria Medrano, who with her husband was there selling hot dogs. Shortly afterward, she said, the car hit the people, and the couple narrowly escaped when it crushed their stand. 'The car stopped once it hit the hot dog stand, it got stuck there,' Medrano told The Associated Press from the hospital. 'If not, I wouldn't be here to tell' the story. After the crash she heard what sounded like gunshots. 'Everyone started running,' Medrano said.

Thirty hurt after car hits crowd near Los Angeles club
At least 30 people have been injured when a vehicle drove into a crowd outside a club on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, the city's fire department and local media reports say. At least seven people were in critical condition and six others were seriously injured, the fire department said in an online statement. Reuters was not immediately able to contact the city's police department. The incident occurred just before 2am, the fire department said. Captain Adam VanGerpen, a fire department spokesman, was quoted by US broadcaster ABC News as saying that a paramedic assessing one of the injured found a gunshot wound. He said he was unable to confirm reports that it was the driver of the car that hit the crowd. The car, he said, apparently first careened into a taco truck outside the venue and then ploughed through a valet stand and into a large group of people. He said that a line of people - the majority female - were waiting to enter a nightclub when they were struck by a Nissan Versa. Videos posted on X showed roads being sealed off and patients being taken away in ambulances. Authorities gave no immediate details on the cause of the incident or the identity of the driver.
