Chinese aircraft carrier-led fleet to visit Hong Kong for 5 days
A naval fleet led by the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong will arrive in Hong Kong next week for a five-day visit, with open tours and cultural exchanges among events to be held to improve residents' understanding of the development of national defence. Advertisement The Ministry of National Defence announced on Saturday that the fleet, which includes the Yan'an and Zhanjiang missile destroyers, as well as the Yuncheng missile frigate, would visit from July 3 to 7 following the Central Military Commission's approval. The fleet will host a series of open tours and cultural exchange activities, with the visit coming just days after the city marks the 28th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule on Tuesday. 'These events aim to offer Hong Kong compatriots a more direct and in-depth understanding of China's advancements in national defence and military development in the new era,' a Xinhua News Agency report said. Two warships, the destroyer Changsha and assault ship Hainan, visited Hong Kong for five days last November Advertisement The Shandong, launched in 2017 and officially in service since December 2019, is China's first domestically built and outfitted conventionally powered aircraft carrier. It followed the Liaoning, a refitted Soviet-made vessel, which was commissioned in 2012.

Diego Luna's final 'Kimmel' monologue hits it out of the park
Diego Luna has had an excellent week. The Mexican actor and Andor star has finished up a guest-hosting spot for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, having delivered powerful monologues about Donald Trump's harsh immigration enforcement policies and sitting down for compelling interviews with icons such as civil rights activist Dolores Huerta. While receiving press praise and enthusiastic online comments, Luna has also faced hateful comments and criticism from the likes of Fox News — and he read out these posts and headlines on the show. On Thursday, for his final round, Luna brought it home by opening the show with mariachi music, giving Kimmel co-host Guillermo an executive producer promotion ("I don't know if I can do that, but I just did,"), and delivering a final must-watch monologue appealing to the audience for unity, not division. "I know there is a lot of focus in your media about the differences between our cultures and the violence south of the border, but I hope this week I was able to open up the dialogue. We should be doing more of that, telling our stories and finding what connects us," says Luna in the clip above. "We shouldn't let our cultural exchange be divided by borders, by ignorance, by fear, or a wall built by your president (that he paid for, by the way). We're going through a hard time. Authoritarian leaders and expressions are on the rise, and it's happening everywhere. Leaders who attack the press, use the military against their own citizens, and claim they have the answer to everything. Does that sound familiar? "But it's in our hands to do something. There are many ways to push back. And one way is by making fun of them every night like Jimmy does. Using comedy to defend freedom, they don't like that shit. And we can't take that for granted, because we, the audience, have to defend spaces like this. Without satire and voices like Jimmy's that question and challenge the abuse of power, democracy doesn't just weaken, it can disappear. And we cannot let that happen." Now, go and watch Luna's opening monologue if you missed it.

Frankfurt China-Germany Standardization Cooperation Innovation Center Launched
Taicang Municipal People's Government FRANKFURT, Germany, June 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The China-Germany Standardization Cooperation Innovation Center was officially inaugurated in Frankfurt on June 23. The opening ceremony, held along the scenic banks of the Rhine River, marked a significant step forward in enhancing standardization and cultural exchange between China and Germany. The Frankfurt center is an extension of the Suzhou China-Germany Standardization Cooperation Innovation Center and represents Jiangsu Province's first standardization innovation platform established in Germany by a local government. It was jointly established by the Taicang Municipal People's Government and the Suzhou Market Supervision Administration under the guidance of the National Standardization Management Committee. The center will focus on four core areas: standardization policy exchange, standard system research, the development of international standards, and the cultivation of international standardization talents. The core mission of the center is to strengthen collaboration with renowned German standardization bodies such as DIN and DKE, facilitating a bridge for China-Germany standard information sharing, promoting the alignment of technical regulations, and enabling Suzhou (Taicang) enterprises to participate in the formulation of international standards. This collaboration will inject "standardization" power into deepening China-Germany economic and trade relations. Wang Xiangyuan, Secretary of the Taicang Municipal Committee, emphasized that standardization is crucial for the long-term success of enterprises. Taicang has had a 30-year cooperation history with Germany, with over 550 German-funded enterprises located in the city, forming a robust industrial ecosystem in areas such as high-end manufacturing. Florian Spiteller, Director of International Cooperation at DKE noted that international electrical standards are central to promoting technological and cultural exchange, helping companies expand into new markets and produce reliable, safe products. The official operation of the Frankfurt China-Germany Standardization Cooperation Innovation Center represents a solid step in the process of advancing standardization and fostering deeper trade and standardization cooperation between China and Germany. This center will inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation. In recent years, Taicang has actively promoted standardization exchanges with Germany, striving to create a new model for China-Germany standardization cooperation that spans Suzhou, the Yangtze River Delta, and the entire country. Through these efforts, Taicang has become home to a strong base of German enterprises with solid manufacturing capabilities and a good standardization foundation. Taicang enterprises have led and participated in the development of numerous international and national standards, reinforcing the city's position as a key player in international standardization. HZICC: Global Seekers Unpack 5,000 Years of Magic in Hangzhou
HANGZHOU, China, June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- "More spectacular than I ever imagined!" exclaimed American historian David Ringo Miano, peering through a 5,000-year-old jade disc's perfect aperture at Liangzhu Museum. He was among the ten international "Hangzhou Seekers" including scholars, artists and influencers from ten countries invited by Hangzhou International Communication Center for a five-day immersive journey on mutual learning among civilizations in Hangzhou this June. At the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, a black pottery jar etched with cryptic symbols ignited cross-cultural fascination. Greek anthropologist Christina Papageorgopoulou noted the striking parallels: "The patterns mirror motifs on contemporaneous Greek pottery!" "Like Egyptians, they tamed rivers with brilliance." Egyptian curator Remonda Fayez Michel found spiritual kinship in ancient hydro-engineering. West Lake's misty rain became cinematic gold for Italian documentarian Leonardo Cinieri Lombroso. Turkish journalist Tunç Akkoç, reciting Chinese poet Su Shi's 11th-century verses, mused: "Poetry breathes soul into these waters." In the tea museum, Thai conductor Kittiporn Tantrarungroj traced his Chinese ancestry by whisking the character "Chen" in matcha foam, while German photographer Gunther Riehle captured emerald tea terraces through downpours. As Canadian influencer Angelina Hui Qing Zhang dressed in a Hanfu of the Song Dynasty strolled along the alleys of the canal-side houses, Brazilian lawyer Renato de Almeida Freitas Junior filmed the canal boat models at Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum, declaring: "This engineering marvel deserves global recognition." At Qiandao Lake, the giant net fishing spectacle stole the show. As 15 tons of silver carp erupted from the water, Gunther said: "This leap captures Hangzhou's vitality!" The high-speed rail's 50-minute glide from urban towers to misty peaks, just left Francisca Molinero, principal of a Spanish international school marveled at the ecological harmony. The charm of civilizations lies in dialogue instead of monologue. During the event, ten representatives of experts from different fields, as well as the Seekers, jointly initiated a dialogue on civilizations that connected the east and west. The last day saw the Seekers pair up with five Hangzhou families, initiating a down-to-earth journey of exploring the city. The farewell banquet unfolded at a lakeside "Moveable Feast," where they cooked their hometown dishes alongside Hangzhou chefs. Like the Grand Canal's ceaseless flow beneath ancient bridges, the dialogues ripple outward. It is highly likely that you will soon hear a symphony echoed from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, or the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
