Emerging Markets Trade Flat as Fed and Tariff Uncertainties Weigh

Emerging-market stocks and currencies were little changed as many investors stayed on the sidelines amid uncertainties including the Federal Reserve's policy moves, an impending tariff deadline and the onset of the holiday season. MSCI Inc.'s EM equity benchmark fluctuated as optimism over semiconductor stocks was offset by a selloff in electric-vehicle makers. Asian Currencies Consolidate; Trade Deal Hopes May Support

0027 GMT — Asian currencies consolidate in the morning session, but may be supported by hopes for more trade deals. The Trump administration engaged in negotiations with China on Monday in Sweden, with additional discussions expected on Tuesday. The U.S. is expected to grant an extension to China regarding the Aug. 12 deadline of the trade truce between them, two members of CBA's Global Economic & Markets Research say in a research report. Confirmation of such an extension is likely to offer modest support to the Australian dollar versus the U.S. dollar, the members add. AUD/USD is little changed at 0.6518; USD/JPY is steady at 148.55. Asian Currencies Consolidate; Risk Appetite May Buoy

0030 GMT — Asian currencies consolidate against the dollar in the morning session, but may be buoyed by risk appetite following recent U.S. trade deals with other countries. The U.S.-Japan trade deal boosts risk sentiment, NAB's Tapas Strickland says in a commentary. There are also growing expectations of a similar deal between the U.S. and EU, the head of Market Economics adds. The EU is negotiating an outline trade agreement with the Trump administration for 15% tariffs on most of its exports to the U.S. USD/KRW edges 0.1% lower to 1,373.65, while USD/TWD is 0.2% higher at 29.30, FactSet data show.
