The Dandy: A People's History of Sartorial Splendour by Peter K Andersson
The Dandy: A People's History of Sartorial Splendour Author : Peter K Andersson ISBN-13 : 978-0198882435 Publisher : Oxford University Press Guideline Price : £30 Swedish scholar Peter K Andersson delves into the history of the dandy, western society's snappiest of dressers, from Oscar Wilde to the teddy boys of the 1950s, the almost-forgotten mashers of the 1880s to the new romantics a century later. Having grown up 'a solitary chap in a world of blokes', Andersson was always drawn to the idea of the distinctively dressed dandy. For Andersson, the dandy is not to be confused with the 18th-century 'fop', and is a particular societal sub-set, mostly made up of men but occasionally including women, who 'created their own styles and codes, who have partially borrowed or stolen fashions from the elites, but made them into their own and more often than not creating new trends and shaping the fashions for the populace'. Andersson describes 14 distinctive case studies of different dandy subcultures, from the early 19th to the late 20th centuries, explaining their origins, as well as the customs and conduct of the dandies themselves. Most dandyish culture stemmed from Britain, with the writer proposing Beau Brummell as the first modern dandy; a favourite of Prince George, Brummell's gambling habits led to a fall from grace and a swift move to Paris to escape his creditors. However, Andersson draws parallels with international groups, including the calicots and gandins of Paris, the American zoot-suiters and the sapeur culture of Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo. READ MORE Dublin, part of the British empire for much of Andersson's period of study, features in a notable 1818 news report, when two dandies who offended some street-sellers were dragged into a backyard, 'where an assembly of 'stout females' proceeded to tie their cravats together before throwing snuff at their faces'. Moustaches (real and false), canes, cigars, high-heeled boots, spurs, monocles, high collars and tall hats, as well as various styles of jackets and trousers, all feature prominently as Andersson takes us on a whistlestop tour of the swells, gents and dudes who played a huge role in the establishment of the mass-market fashion industry. While many of Andersson's anecdotes are fascinating, from the transgender dandies of interwar Berlin to the teddy boy photographs of film director Ken Russell, this is primarily an academic tome and thus the tone veers more towards the austere than the conversational. Casual readers beware.

Vivienne Westwood Men's Spring 2026: Dandy Meets Granny
The word dandy is being thrown around a fair bit this season, and Andreas Kronthaler offered his interpretation Sunday morning, melding elements of granny's wardrobe, rugby uniforms — and the super-elevated platforms that famously tripped up Naomi Campbell back in 1993. Suffice it to say this was not the usual clientele filing out of Bar Rivoli next to San Babila, where Kronthaler staged an open-air fashion show, marking the Vivienne Westwood brand's first stand-alone men's presentation since 2017, and its first Milan showing. A slowed-down version of Orbital's 'The Box' was among his musical selections. Kronthaler didn't hold back on provocation, sending out a velvet catsuit with a front porthole to exalt the model's six pack and pubes; adding script necklaces declaring Chaos, Sex or Motherf–ker, and accessorizing a balloon-sleeved coat with granny heels, a clutch bag and at least four days of stubble. The collection was all over the place, pinging from handsome double-breasted tailoring to wispy dresses and a tabard densely embroidered with roses. There were toreador pants, and a handsome navy suede bomber jacket, which made for an unexpectedly cool combination. Kronthaler recently told WWD he hopes to stage a 'proper runway show' come January. Issa Rae Is Absolutely Flawless in Ozwald Boateng at the 2025 Met Gala
Issa Rae is at the 2025 Met Gala looking absolutely unreal. The actor arrived on the red carpet for "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" and interpreted the "Tailored for You" dress code with a gorgeous tailored, three-piece suit by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng. If you think Issa's just wearing a plain black suit, think again. (Not that there would be anything wrong if she was!) Upon closer inspection, the black fabric appears patterned, giving it a hypnotic, textured effect. Speaking to Fits from the Streets before hitting the carpet, the actor described her look as 'dandy, West African style.' When asked what she thought of the Superfine theme, Issa responded, 'It's iconic, it's going to be so black.' Before arriving at the Met Gala, Issa shared a 'Get Ready With Me' video on her Instagram, showing off her skin prep with Merit. In the video, Issa teased that she might be wearing two looks this night, so consider us sitting on the edge of our seats. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Issa Rae (@issarae) "I prefer stress-free outfits," Issa recently told Marie Claire. "When I'm in creative mode, I don't like to think too much about what I'm wearing, so I'm very much into jeans and T-shirts. I have a slew of these form-fitting, long-sleeve shirts that I can wear with any jeans, so I don't have to think about it while I'm out for the day. I've gotten better at knowing what works for me—what looks good on my body type and what makes me feel most confident. It all goes hand in hand. Feeling good makes me more inclined to take risks and, you know, play around with my style because that's part of the fun. Fashion is about how you present yourself to the world, so I ask myself that question every day. I want that to be reflected and to feel confident in who I am." Stars Hit the 2025 Met Gala After-Parties, From Jenna Ortega to Lisa
This year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's signature gala welcomed a host of top hats, pinstripes and impeccable suiting (and a fashionably late, pregnant Rihanna) in celebration of the Costume Institute's new exhibition about the history of Black dandy fashion. But it's the after-parties where politicians, athletes, celebrities and influencers, many of whom did not appear on the blue carpet, let loose. On Monday night, as it continued to rain, celebrities dispersed across the city to toast martinis and mull over the moment. Here's a sampling of who was out and what they wore.
