Theft suspect in jail without bond after missing arraignment

Jul. 3—A Moulton man convicted of first-degree theft of property in 2011 and currently out on bond for allegedly committing the same crime in 2023 was arrested Monday by the Morgan County Sheriff's Office for failing to appear at his June 24 arraignment, according to court records and affidavits. Jail records show Christopher Allen Haynes, 44, was being held without bond at the Morgan County Jail on Wednesday afternoon. Haynes was arrested June 15, 2024, by Decatur police for allegedly stealing a truck from a business in Northwest Decatur the previous year and then wrecking it. "It was later determined that Christopher Allen Haynes was driving the vehicle at the time of the wreck," according to the affidavit. The affidavit identified the truck as a gold 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. A state trooper contacted Haynes, who allegedly admitted to taking the truck but claimed he had permission to use it and had left his own vehicle in the parking lot. However, statements from the truck's owner and video surveillance footage directly contradicted Haynes' claims, according to the affidavit. Court records show Haynes was released from Morgan County Jail on July 3, 2024, after posting a $5,000 bond following his arrest for first-degree theft of property. Haynes was arrested by Priceville police on July 1, 2010, for stealing over $3,800 worth of jewelry from an individual, according to a complaint filed in Morgan County District Court. At the time, he resided in Trinity. Court records show Haynes pleaded guilty to first-degree theft of property on February 7, 2011, and received a 15-year prison sentence. Since his conviction, multiple alias warrants have been issued for his failure to appear in court or comply with court-ordered payments. — or 256-340-2442.

Decatur man arrested after allegedly shooting mother in buttocks

Jun. 18—A Decatur man was charged with second-degree domestic violence last week after shooting his mother in the buttocks with a pistol, according to a Morgan County sheriff's investigator's affidavit filed Monday. According to the affidavit, deputies responded to a shooting call on June 10 at 424 Aday Road N.W. The caller told deputies that her son, 38-year-old Matthew Ryan Martinez, had shot her. Martinez's mother had not seen him in three months and he "randomly" showed up at her residence. "(The caller) advised that when Matthew came in her residence, she gave him a hug and Matthew did not show much affection and just patted her on the back," the affidavit said. The affidavit said Martinez's mother then went to sit on her couch and told him he could sit as well, but instead, he just stood by the front door and was not acting normally. He became hostile when his mother asked about his eBay business and began mumbling incoherently. After looking back at her TV, she heard Martinez say something like "Bye, Mom," and she heard gunshots shortly after. "(The caller) advised that she felt a burning pain in her buttocks and realized that Matthew had shot her," the affidavit said. "She said that as she was getting up, she heard Matthew leaving her property in his truck at a high rate of speed." Morgan County 911 then issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for Martinez and his vehicle, a white Nissan Titan four-door truck. The affidavit said Decatur police officers were able to stop Martinez in his truck a short time later. As they were searching the truck, officers located two handguns on the passenger side of the vehicle. "CSI recovered three spent 9mm casings at the scene," the affidavit said. Martinez was booked into Morgan County Jail at approximately 9:36 p.m. and released Monday after posting a $75,000 bond, according to court documents. — or 256-340-2442.

Trinity man convicted of rape, sodomy

Jun. 12—A Trinity man was convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy Wednesday by a Morgan County jury, according to the Morgan County District Attorney's Office. Cody Wayne Terry, 30, will be sentenced Aug. 26. He had a prior felony conviction for a violation of the Alabama Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Act. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joe Lewis, with Circuit Judge Stephen Brown presiding. Officers with the Decatur Police Department were dispatched to a residence on 20th Avenue Southwest in reference to a rape in April 2021. There they met with the victim, "who had two swollen black eyes, bruising to her face and neck, and injuries to her lips. The victim advised she had been raped and beaten by an acquaintance, who threatened to kill her if she screamed," according to the District Attorney's Office. Terry was confirmed as the assailant through DNA analysis. "We certainly appreciate the jury's service in this case. This was a particularly brutal crime, and we are grateful that the victim got justice," Lewis said in a statement. Terry faces a maximum of life in prison. — eric@ or 256-340-2435
