New Jersey couple fueled by tragedy is on mission to save lives, make roads safer

It was a 38-mile-long journey across South Jersey for dozens of bikers on Sunday. A ride full of heavy hearts as they honored the life of Toni Donato-Bolis and her unborn child. "Looking at my daughter, lifeless, was the most incredible thing that I think that we've ever encountered in the 45 years that we've been together," Bolis' father, Charles Donato, said, standing next to his wife, Mary. Donato said his daughter was expected to give birth two days after she was killed by a distracted driver in Washington Township on June 1, 2011. In the years since, her family members have become advocates for safer driving. "Back when my sister was killed, there were no laws against distracted driving or texting and driving," said Angela Melroy, sister of Toni Donato-Bolis. "We fought up at the state level, and we were able to get a law passed called the Kulesh, Kubert and Bolis' Law back in 2012, which gives penalties for people that are caught texting and driving." Their mission to save lives and do good in the community continued with a raffle and luncheon on Sunday in Gloucester County. The family created The Toni Donato-Bolis and Baby RJ Foundation. They said they've raised more than $100,000 over the years for scholarships for high school seniors. Melroy said it's what her sister would have wanted. "My sister Toni was full of life. She was the biggest giver. So, this is something right up her alley," Melroy said. "If she was here, this is what she would be doing for someone else that we lost, or if anyone else lost someone." Donato said his family will continue dedicating their lives to making a difference. "That's the whole purpose of everything we do — is to keep her name and her unborn child's name alive," he said.

Family, coworkers plead for safer driving after Miami-Dade landscaper killed by passing vehicle in Cutler Bay

Family members and coworkers gathered in grief Thursday at the Cutler Bay site where a 39-year-old man, identified by his mother only as Carlos, was struck and killed while landscaping along the side of the road near U.S. Highway 1 and Southwest 186th Street. Carlos was working as part of a landscaping crew when he was fatally hit by a passing vehicle. His coworkers, who witnessed the crash, are devastated. "He loved his father, loved his mother… He had just gotten off the phone with his mom," said coworker Tay Anderson. Carlos' mother, overwhelmed with grief, was seen carefully collecting his hat and other personal belongings before the scene was cleared. Speaking off-camera, she described her son as a kind and hardworking man and the devoted father of two young daughters. Coworkers told CBS News Miami that the crash points to a growing problem: distracted driving. "Drivers don't look out for us," Anderson said. "They don't see us. All they see… is their phones." "There's no safety for us landscapers working in the middle of the road," added Alex Yingo, another coworker. "They're always rushing by. The guy was a good man. It's just so sad for one of us to pass away like that, out of nowhere." As Carlos' mother sorted through the remnants of her son's belongings, his coworkers had a clear and urgent message for drivers. "Just please… slow down. Be aware of our safety too," Yingo said. "We have families. And we're out here working hard." The identity of the driver has not been released.

Northern Ont. driving instructor's licence suspended after traffic stop

A patrol officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service holds up a roadside breathalyzer inside their cruiser indicating an alert following at traffic stop on July 16, 2025. (Thunder Bay Police Service/Facebook) A Thunder Bay driving instructor faces a licence suspension and fines after police say a traffic stop revealed multiple infractions, including alcohol consumption, cellphone use and failure to wear a seatbelt. The Thunder Bay Police Service stated in a social media post on July 16 that an officer pulled over the instructor at 9:40 a.m. while he was driving a marked driving school vehicle on his way to work. A 'troubling' stop 'A very troubling stop on many fronts,' police said. The officer initially stopped the driver for using a cellphone while operating the vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. From bad to worse 'Bad yes, but things get worse,' the post continued. Authorities said the officer detected alcohol on the driver's breath and administered a roadside breathalyzer test, which registered in the 'warn range' of 50 to 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. As a result of the incident, the driving instructor received a three-day licence suspension under Ontario's warn-range suspension rules, along with two tickets – one for distracted driving for the cellphone use and another for not wearing a seatbelt. No lessons that day 'He will not be conducting any driving lessons today,' police confirmed in their post on Wednesday. The incident has raised concerns about road safety, particularly given the instructor's role in training new motorists in the region. Police have not released any information about the instructor's identity or employer.
