LEGO continues major markets supply strategy with Virginia distribution hub
The LEGO Group announced yesterday (May 8) that it will open a new regional distribution centre in the US state of Virginia. The toymaking giant will invest $366m in the facility, which will be located in the city of Chester in Prince George County. Construction is due to begin later this year, with the centre to cover an area of 2,000,000sqft (186,000sqm) when it is completed in 2027. The new opening is part of the company's global supply strategy, which is aimed at locating factories and distribution centres close to major markets to support growth in the area. Carsten Rasmussen, chief operations officer of the LEGO Group, explained: 'The regional distribution centre will bring greater flexibility to our network, ensuring we are well positioned to support long-term growth in the Americas. Together with our future Virginia factory, the regional distribution centre will shorten our supply chain in the region – reducing lead times for our customers as well as our environmental impact. We are grateful for the continued support from the Commonwealth of Virginia.' The centre will be the second facility in the company's Americas network, joining an existing facility in Fort Worth, Texas. It will be operated by a third-party logistics partner for which it is expected to create 305 jobs. Once fully operational, the factory is expected to create more than 1,700 jobs with the LEGO Group itself. Elsewhere, the LEGO Group opened a new factory in Binh Duong, Vietnam, in April and is expanding three of its existing factories located in Nyíregyháza, Hungary; Jiaxing, China; and Monterrey, Mexico, to meet future global demand. In 2024, LEGO also opened its second regional distribution centre in Europe, located in Belgium. It plans to open its second centre in Asia, also in Vietnam, later in 2025.
