If you're hot, they are too: How to keep your dog cool this summer
With much of Newfoundland and parts of Labrador under a heat warning, it's not only humans facing the hot temperatures — our furry friends are fighting it too. The Kenmount Road Animal Hospital runs a doggy daycare program that serves over 30 dogs at a time. High temperatures coming earlier this year means keeping pups cool is paramount. "If we're finding we're too warm, they are definitely finding it too hot," doggy daycare manager Danielle Peddigrew Walsh told CBC News. "It's definitely warmer than expected. Normally we don't get the hot, concerning weather until August," said Peddigrew Walsh. Peddigrew Walsh said the daycare uses a variety of methods to keep their dogs from getting too hot. With their AC system running non-stop, the dogs spend most of the day inside, making use of their indoor runs. Frozen "pup-sicles" are also a hit. "It's an ice box in there constantly," said Peddigrew Walsh. When the dogs are outside, the daycare uses pools and ice games to keep the animals stimulated while battling the heat. They have to make sure their staff stay safe too. "We want to just make sure everybody's staying nice and cool," said Peddigrew Walsh. Hot dog? Here are the signs Peddigrew Walsh warned that flat-faced dogs — like bulldogs, French bulldogs and shih tzus — are at a higher risk of overheating in the summer time. She also listed off the signs to look out for dogs that are too hot. "The big one you're going to notice is when they're panting, their panting will change," said Peddigrew Walsh. "The shape of their tongue will be kind of exaggerated. They won't be able to keep their tongue back in their mouth." You can also figure out how hot your dog is by feeling them. "You'll notice especially with the darker dogs, they'll get really hot to the touch really fast," she added. No AC, no problem While the doggy daycare has air conditioning, this isn't the case for many homes. However, there are plenty of ways to keep your pooch cool, and entertained, without it. "I'm a big fan of filling up, like, a doggy baby pool type thing, putting treats in it. Ice cubes is another fun one. You can freeze all sorts of things," said Peddigrew Walsh. As for walks, she said to avoid going out during the hottest parts of the day, in the late afternoon. "Don't walk your dogs in the middle of the day during the hottest hours if you're really wanting to get your dog out for some exercise. Really early morning or late in the evening is your best bet right now." Download our free CBC News app to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador. Dachshund's Elation Over Seeing Mom After Day Care Is Full of the Purest Love
Dachshund's Elation Over Seeing Mom After Day Care Is Full of the Purest Love originally appeared on PetHelpful. Most dogs love to go to doggy day care, and it's a great way to get them socialization, especially if you work a lot or are away from home during the day. Cannoli is an adorable mini long-haired Dachshund that enjoys going, but what he likes even more is coming home to his mom. His mom shared a video on TikTok of the greeting she receives when Cannoli arrives home from day care. It's the cutest thing you'll see today! Make sure your sound is on so that you can hear Cannoli's little squeaks of happiness and love. This video literally made my day! I watched it a handful of times because you can see the pure joy on Cannoli's face and hear it in mom's voice, too! Not to mention he's a gorgeous little guy! Commenters also loved the sweet video. @Take a Little Tripp swooned, "Aww the little whines are so cute!!!" @RoxietheRoxStarDoxie shared, "Best feeling in the world. It never gets old."Even though I work from home, I still have to work and focus on my job, much to my dog's dismay. That's why sending her to doggy day care a couple of days a week is something we've been considering. Not only do dogs get to socialize with other dogs, but they also get to socialize with other humans too, which is just as important. If you have an active dog, they get to burn off energy that they usually have to keep bundled up until you get home. And by the time you get home, they might be too tired to do anything other than nap…if they even make it that far! Most towns and cities have at least a couple day cares to choose from; in our city, they seem to be everywhere! If you're not sure which one is right for your dog, they usually offer a time to have you and your pooch come in to check it out. Asking friends for a recommendation is a good idea; just make sure to do your research to make sure the ones you are looking at are reputable and have the services you're looking for. You can expect to pay on average around $40 a day. Speaking of services, some daycares even offer grooming and training services, which can give you more time to spend on the weekends doing something fun with your pooch instead of running errands! I work in a doggy daycare and would never own these 10 breeds – they're stinky, unhealthy, fart & attack me at work
IT can be hard to know which dog breed is best for you - but one professional has given her advice. May, who has worked at a doggy daycare for eight years, shared 10 breeds that she would never have herself. 5 5 On her @notnutmeggyy account, she shared a video which has racked up 46,000 likes, of the dogs that have some off-putting drawbacks, in her opinion. She added that her list is from her 'personal experience' and not every single dog from that breed shows the negative traits. The first up was an English bulldog, which, although it can be adorable, was one to avoid due to being 'stinky' and 'so unhealthy'. She added that the one had even tried to attack her recently which was another strike against the breed. French bulldogs were also on her banned list for being 'unhealthy' and 'overbred.' Next up was a German Shepherd, who made the list due to their 'crazy anxiety'. She added that she would not be able to keep up with their energy and she would only consider getting a senior one. Fourthly, was a Chow Chow, as she said they aren't great with anyone other than their owner. On a side note, she said their 'purple' tongues 'freak' her out. Pugs also made the list for 'not being healthy', barking too much, 'farting' too much and shedding. Foxhounds were also a no-go, although she said she loves them other than the fact they are 'too loud.' Pitbulls, staffies and bullies also made the list as "aggression" is in their genes. In the UK, it is against the law to own certain types of dogs, including the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro. Additionally, XL Bully dogs are banned in England and Wales. It is also illegal to sell, abandon, give away, or breed from any of these banned dogs. May added that pitbulls are nearly always on Apoquel or anxiety medication, and also have allergies. The next dog on her list was a Pomeranian as they can be 'aggressive' and 'way too loud.' 5 5 5 Another gripe she had was how much grooming they require. Dog number nine was a husky as they are 'loud af', she doesn't live in a cold climate and 'shedding goes crazy.' Finally, she recommended people don't buy Jack Russells as she's encountered so many "aggressive" ones and also she 'doesn't want to play fetch 24/7.' While many people agreed with her selection, the list also ruffled a few feathers with dog owners. One said: 'As I sit here on the couch with my 3 pitties who have zero allergies and no aggressive tendencies.' Another added: 'I won't tolerate English bulldog slander! They're wonderful dogs.' And a third commented: 'Worth noting that the majority of these qualities aren't found in well-bred versions of these dogs.' Golden Retriever's Pure Excitement Over Seeing Friends at Day Care Is Everything
Considering just how important socializing our pets is, it's no surprise that some dogs really thrive in doggy day care. If their humans can't be around, they're all about getting in some playtime with other pups and hanging out with their friends. On Thursday, May 22, @cookiethegoldenretriver1 on TikTok shared this footage of the excitement her Golden Retriever has when it's time to see her friends at school. Nobody better get in her way, or they're getting knocked over! Here, we see Cookie right at the door, absolutely losing her mind with how excited she is to get in there and play. It's kind of mind blowing just how fast her little paws are going, trying to get that door. She might be setting a new record or something. Safe to say that day care must be one of her very favorite places. If Mom ever worries about her when she's not around, this must be a pretty reassuring sight to see! While watching the other videos that Cookie's mom has shared on TikTok, it seems like this Golden Retriever doesn't just love her friends hard — she loves her people just as much. For example, she might be a dog, but this is a straight up bear hug that Cookie is giving her kid! There's truly nothing better than snuggling with your pup, especially if your dog loves hugs like Cookie does, so I know her kiddo must have been on cloud nine! And in another TikTok video, Cookie is waiting so patiently by the window for her dad to come home and watching that driveway like a hawk. I can only imagine the happiness that ensues when they are reunited at the end of the day. Cookie has such a big heart and so much excitement to give. Never change, Cookie! 🐶🐾🐾 Golden Retriever's Pure Excitement Over Seeing Friends at Day Care Is Everything first appeared on Parade Pets on May 25, 2025
