Ranking the 9 best racing movies from Cars to F1: The Movie
The fast-paced action flick F1: The Movie hit theaters this weekend, and based on early returns, audiences are loving it. It currently sits with a whopping 97% approval rating from audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes — the 83% critics rating makes it "Certified Fresh" — and is tracking to earn an impressive $55.6 million domestically and $144 million globally. F1: The Movie, which follows washed-up Formula 1 racer Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) as he tries to find himself and his place on a new team alongside up-and-coming driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), is the latest in a long line of driving-themed movies. So which of the racing movies is the best? Let's take a look at some of the top contenders. Please note this is movies only, so the Netflix miniseries Senna doesn't count. Is Days of Thunder a particularly good movie? No. Is it still iconic? Yes. Early Tom Cruise plays basically Maverick in a race car with a supporting cast of Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman and Randy Quaid. Rubbing is racing. This Pixar movie spawned several sequels and has made Lightning McQueen a mainstay in pop culture — KACHOW! Not the best that the studio has put out, but Owen Wilson brings heart to the race track. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is an utterly ridiculous movie and some of Will Ferrell's best work. It's wildly quotable — if you ain't first, you're last — and a hilarious look at the world of racing. Gran Turismo took the real story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) turning from a video game racer to a real-life driver and brought it to the big screen. David Harbour, Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou co-starred in this fast-paced and exciting sports flick full of emotion. While the rest of the franchise got away from the true racing aspect, the first was all about the underbelly of street racing (and family, of course). It's a truly iconic movie, led by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. Rush tells the true story of rival racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda — played by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, respectively — that approached the art of Formula 1 racing in two vastly different ways. While their story obviously revolves around the track, it also tackles the physical and emotional toll racing has not just on the drivers, but the family in their lives. I fought the urge to put this at the top, but you could make the argument. Joseph Kosinski is masterful when it comes to putting the viewer right in the action, and after being snubbed in the cinematography category for Top Gun: Maverick, he should get a nod here. Pitt taps into full movie star mode, but it's Idris who truly shines. Kerry Condon is wonderful as the the team's technical lead, and Javier Bardem is wonderful as always. Christian Bale and Matt Damon star Ford v Ferrari, a true story about how American car designer Ken Carroll (Damon) and British driver Ken Miles worked alongside one another to build a Ford race car that could take on Ferrari at the iconic Le Mans race in 1966. It's full of emotion and incredible driving scenes, and it's worthy of the top spot. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Ranking the 9 best racing movies from Cars to F1: The Movie

3 great free movies to stream this weekend (June 27-29)
Make a terrifying zombie movie, and people will come. Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later managed to scare its way to the top of the domestic box office last weekend. This weekend belongs to race cars, as F1 speeds into theaters. Early reviews have praised the Brad Pitt-led action flick, which should be one of the biggest movies of the summer. After navigating the treacherous races in F1, slow down, grab a seat on the couch, and stream a free movie on a FAST service. That is not a typo. FAST services like Pluto and Tubi are free. Once you sign up, fire up one of our recommendations below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Purge (2013) 12 years ago this month, James DeMonaco introduced a dystopian United States in The Purge. After an economic collapse, the New Founding Fathers of America bring order to the U.S. and implement the Purge. For 12 hours, all crime, including murder, is legal. While the poor have nowhere to hide, the wealthy have impenetrable security systems to protect themselves from anarchy. When the son of James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) disarms his house's security system, they become the targets of a radical group looking to commit murder. The Purge has obvious political undertones, but when it shifts to a home-invasion thriller, the movie finds its groove. Stream The Purge on Tubi. Days of Thunder (1990) Tom Cruise is a master of generating headlines. While attending the F1 premiere, talks of a Days of Thunder sequel began to permeate. Director Joseph Kosinski even suggested a crossover between Days of Thunder and F1. Cruise is not even in F1, and he somehow inserted himself into the story. He's a true one-of-one. With a sequel in development, there's no better time like the present to watch Days of Thunder. Cruise plays Cole Trickle, a cocky NASCAR driver who suffers a devastating injury. With the help of a doctor (Nicole Kidman) and his rival (Michael Rooker), Cole gets back on track to race in the Daytona 500. Days of Thunder isn't perfect, but Tony Scott's fast-paced and boisterous action movie is ideal popcorn entertainment. Stream Days of Thunder on Pluto TV. Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) If the Terminator himself said it, then it must be true. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently said that Terminator Salvation is the worst movie in the franchise. The most underrated of the bunch is Terminator: Dark Fate. 25 years after T2, a state-of-the-art Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent to 2020 to kill Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a young girl who will affect the future. To counter the Terminator, the Resistance sends an augmented soldier named Grace (Mackenzie Davis) to protect Dani. Director Tim Miller stages gritty action sequences in this vastly underappreciated thriller. Having Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and James Cameron doesn't hurt either. Stream Terminator: Dark Fate on Pluto TV.

‘Sinners 2' Wasn't on Ryan Coogler's Mind, but Maybe That Has Changed
The Michael B. Jordan period vampire movie was a smash hit, so sequel talk is inevitable. Before Ryan Coogler's Sinners was released into the world, he was not thinking of it as the start of a franchise. In an interview published three days prior to the film's release, the writer and director made that abundantly clear. 'I never think about [sequels],' Coogler said to Ebony Magazine. 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique. I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.' Those quotes have been making the rounds in recent days and rightfully so. Since that article was published, Sinners went on to become a certified, and maybe even surprising, smash hit. It has grossed over $265 million domestically and another $80 million plus internationally. That, coming on a budget that was reportedly less than $100 million, is proof that audiences love this movie and could want more. It's something that wasn't for certain before release, so any direct quotes from Coogler himself about sequels would certainly be of interest. Coogler himself clearly knew that might be the case too. In a widely publicized deal he made for Sinners, the filmmaker gets the full rights to the film back to himself 25 years after release. Usually, studios keep those rights, but Coogler gets his back. Would he have made that a point of contention if he didn't think Sinners had a life beyond just this one film? Hypothetically, sure, because movies can make money forever, but there was certainly an impetus to own and control his own creation in some way as well. It's a confident move. Plus, don't forget, Coogler also added a mid-credits scene in his film that showed two of his main characters, immortal vampires played by Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, decades after the events in the movie. On the one hand, it works as an acknowledgement that these characters will forever be out there. On the other hand, it also could be a tease of future stories to come. So, yes. Before the release of Sinners, Ryan Coogler certainly said that he wasn't thinking about making a sequel. But that was before the film was a huge success. Maybe that thinking has changed a bit.

THUNDERBOLTS*: Alternate Taskmaster and Ghost Designs Revealed in Early Concept Art — GeekTyrant
Marvel's Thunderbolts* ignited some excitement in the Marvel fan community because it actually turned out to be a great movie! It was filled with some great interesting characters and each one of them has a cool and unique look. Concept artist Constantine Sekeris recently shared a few early designs for Taskmaster and Ghost that offer a peek into the creative process behind their final on-screen looks. These alternate costumes don't veer too far off from what we saw in the film, but there are some noticeable tweaks, particularly in Ghost's helmet design and overall color palette. 'Here is a sneak peek at Ghost,' Sekeris wrote on Instagram. 'You can see in this early design we played with having more grey break up….you have a chance to see many more exploration in the Art of Thunderbolts coming out soon …loved working on this project and loved the movie….more to come humbly thank you.' While Taskmaster's design retains much of the tactical feel we've come to expect, these early images hint at more exaggerated silhouette choices and detailed texturing that was ultimately toned down in the film. Ghost's suit, meanwhile, shows off a sleeker, more segmented armor layout in shades of grey and silver. As Thunderbolts* continues its theatrical run, the film has dropped to the No. 2 spot at the domestic box office, pulling in $16.5 million in its third weekend across 3,523 theaters, which is a 50% dip from the previous week. That brings its domestic total to $155.4 million and its global haul to $325 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is next up on the plate, and I'm excited for that!
