Winnipeg police arrest pair of men allegedly selling drugs at wildfire evacuation site

The Winnipeg Police Service has made a pair of arrests after learning that drug dealers were allegedly focusing their efforts at evacuation sites in the city. Police said they began to investigate after receiving tips from the public of illegal activity in the 1700 block of Wellington Avenue. On Sunday, officers watched the suspects take part in what they believed to be several drug deals. Police note the suspects were in a car during the transactions. Officers stopped the suspect vehicle around 9:25 p.m. in the 1700 block of Sargent Avenue and arrested the driver. During the search, police found $820 in cash, three grams of cocaine and a drug line. The 18-year-old man driving the car has been charged with trafficking cocaine, possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000 and breaching an undertaking. He is in custody. A 21-year-old man who was the car's passenger is facing charges of trafficking cocaine and possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000. He was released on an undertaking. None of the charges against either man have been proven in court. Police said their liaison teams are visiting evacuation centres to ensure everyone feels safe. Officers are reminding residents to call 911 if there is a crime in progress or 204-986-6222 for non-emergencies.
