Where happy hour is a crime: A state-by-state map of drinking deal bans
For many nine-to-five workers, happy hours are a treasured tradition to unwind after work. But in six states, evening drink discounts are illegal. Massachusetts was the first to ban happy hour specials in 1984, after a fatal drunk driving accident that was tied to a drink promotion. As an anti-drunk-driving movement took hold, other states followed Massachusetts's lead. The 1980s saw widespread changes to alcohol laws, including bans on unlimited drink deals, two-for-one specials, and multiple drinks served at once. During that decade, the national drinking age was also raised from 18 to 21. Since that initial wave of drinking restrictions 40 years ago, though, some states have started to rethink their laws. Kansas was the first state to repeal its total ban on happy hour specials in 2012, with Illinois and Oklahoma following suit in 2015 and 2018, respectively. Yahoo News used data from the Alcohol Policy Information System to map where bans on happy hour and unlimited drink specials remain.

Edmonton woman fined for drunk driving at 150 km/h in rainstorm
RCMP say they fined an Edmonton woman $1,200 for driving drunk at excessive speeds during a rainstorm last week. A statement issued Friday said the woman was driving on the Yellowhead east of Edmonton near the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village on June 20. Police used a laser speed measuring device to calculate the vehicle's speed at 150 kilometers an hour during a heavy rainstorm with reduced visibility. The woman's licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. She was also fined $1,200. 'In Alberta, if you suspect someone is driving under the influence, you should call 911 immediately,' said a statement from Lamont RCMP. 'When reporting, if safe to do so, provide your location, a description of the vehicle (including license plate, make, model, and color), and the direction of travel to police.'

Alleged drunk driving crash near Kalispell costs passenger an arm
Jun. 27—Prosecutors say a driver involved in a U.S. 2 wreck earlier this month that cost her passenger a limb had a breath alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit. Kelly Ann Hartigan, 48, faces one count of felony negligent vehicular homicide in Flathead County District Court following the June 14 crash. Held in the county jail with bail set at $100,000, she is scheduled to appear before Judge Danni Coffman on June 30 for her arraignment. Hartigan was headed eastbound on U.S. 2 near Kalispell when she drove off the road and hit a light pole, according to court documents. The collision tore the right arm off of her passenger at the shoulder, and Hartigan allegedly continued driving for another 500 yards before stopping. An arriving Montana Highway Patrol trooper allegedly smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Hartigan. They described her as unsteady on her feet and seemed poised to fall over, according to court documents. During the ensuing field sobriety tests, Hartigan allegedly showed multiple signs of impairment. She also sported glossy eyes and swayed on her feet. A subsequent breath test returned with an alcohol content of 0.180, according to court documents. Investigators later secured a blood draw at a medical center following her arrest. Woman, 70, accused of refusing to pull over for police blows 3x over legal alcohol limit: BPS
A 70-year-old woman accused of refusing to stop for police while driving at a slow speed in Barrie is facing an impaired driving charge. Police say they were alerted to a possible drunk driver Tuesday evening who had just left a shopping mall on Bayfield Street and narrowly collided with another vehicle. An officer located the woman's car travelling on Livingstone Street East at St. Vincent Street a short time later, but say she wouldn't pull over. The officer then activated the lights and sirens on the cruiser to try to persuade the driver, but police say the vehicle continued on at a slow speed down the road. At Marjoy Avenue, the officer positioned the cruiser in front of the woman's car, ultimately forcing her to stop. Police say the accused showed obvious signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene. She was taken to the police station for further testing, where she was reportedly determined to be nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit. She was later released from custody with a future court date to answer to the charge. Additionally, her driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
