Five of the best air conditioners to buy as the heatwave hits the UK

Wales' heatwave is underway with record high temperatures expected, but there's one effective solution to combat the sweltering temperatures, which is an air conditioner. Portable air conditioners can be a godsendduring warm and humid days and nights. Air conditioners not only provide relief during the day but also aid in ensuring a good night's sleep by maintaining a cool and less humid environment. However, with the heatwave said to last over the weekend, consumers may require an air conditioner that can be delivered promptly and perform efficiently. Here's a list of worthwhile air conditioners to help cool your rooms. Our selection includes models with varying BTU levels, from lower (ideal for smaller rooms) to higher (suitable for larger spaces), enabling shoppers to select what best suits their needs. JML Air Cooler, Portable Fan and Humidifier - £33.99 For a small and reasonable priced cooling device, Amazon has reduced the price of JML Air Cooler, Portable Fan and Humidifier from £39.99 to £33.99 in its 15% off Amazon Prime Day deal. This device aims to cool your personal space, it has an increased power with four fan settings, and it has an evaporative, washable filter for "long-lasting cooling". It also has a dual mist spray jets for instant cool air, it has a seven-colour LED night light, top-fill tank and adjustable air flow grill. One reviewer was "very pleasantly surprised at how powerful they are", but another customer claimed it was "very noisy" and "isn't powerful enough to cool a room". Snap it up here. The electriQ serves as an excellent entry-level air conditioner, ideal for cooling down smaller rooms. It effectively cools areas up to 20 sqm in homes or offices and offers four modes to choose from, including Cool and Sleep. This model comes with a window kit for venting the unit out of a window and a remote control for adjusting the settings from afar. In terms of energy consumption, it boasts A-rated efficiency, which equates to approximately 20p per hour. However, a word of caution - this model is designed for relatively small rooms, so buyers should make an informed decision. Reviews also indicate that while it effectively cools a decent-sized room, it can be somewhat noisy. A critique from a buyer noted: "Cools a decent-sized bedroom well enough. Fan mode still runs the extractor fan, making it extremely noisy and that mode sort of useless. Its sleep mode doesn't make it quieter, just turns off the lights." Buy it here. Ideal for somewhat larger spaces, the Argo Iside portable air conditioner shines in areas up to 28 sqm including bedrooms and moderately sized rooms – though potential purchasers should double-check their room dimensions before committing. It's also designed to be compact, not hogging too much floor space. It further features a dehumidifier function which promises to accelerate drying laundry or combat dampness and mould at home. With Wi-Fi capabilities, customers have given kudos for its effectiveness but have highlighted its notable noise level. Snap it up here. Amazon's EcoFlow WAVE 3 portable air conditioner was £699 but is now 6% off and priced at £659 in the Prime Day deal. It delivers 1800W cooling - which is said to be 20% more BTU than competitors - to lower temperatures by 8C in just 15 minutes. According to Amazon, its 2000W heating boosts warmth by 9C, while an automatic mode maintains ideal day/night comfort in varying climates. In reviews, one customers described it as an "excellent product", but another claimed it had a "noisy compressor". De'Longhi 11000 BTU Smart Air Conditioner and Dehumidifier - £700 At the top of the price scale on our review list is De'Longhi's offering, renowned for their top-tier dehumidifiers – and this model lives up to the reputation. This 11000 BTU powerhouse carries a price tag of £700 from Argos, a lofty figure, yet for those with spacious abodes, it could be the ultimate investment. Sporting an A+ energy efficiency rating, this air cooler is engineered to keep vast living spaces up to 110 sqm refreshed while curbing summer energy costs. It boasts integrated voice command features and app connectivity for bespoke climate control. Customers have been quick to praise the product, with one reviewer commenting: "It wasn't cheap, but I really wanted one that would actually work and this performs above my expectations". That being said, a few buyers did express some dissatisfaction, noting that the hose attachment was a bit on the smaller side.

Air conditioner that's 'a godsend for sleeping on hot nights' gets £120 price cut

'I love my portable air con unit and it's extremely quiet so doesn't keep me awake at night.' As the weather begins to settle down after the recent heatwave that swept the country, many people are looking for devices that will keep them cool if the weather takes another turn to the warmer side. With mercury hitting as high as 28.9 degrees in Drumnadrochit last Friday, investing in an air conditioner may be a smart move. And even though temperatures have dropped during the day, many people are still struggling to sleep at night due to the heat. Thankfully, Appliances Direct has slashed the price of the electriQ Slimline 7000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner. Normally priced at £369.97, shoppers can now snatch up the 3-in-1 device for £249.97. As well as the £120 saving, shoppers are also given a variety of options to help split the cost. Dubbed as one of electriQ's best selling, entry-level air conditioners, the device is said to deliver an 'unrivalled cooling performance". With an A-rated energy efficiency, this gadget is packed full of features, including an air conditioner, a dehumidifier and fan functions. With a cooling capacity of 7,000 BTU, the device has more than enough power to cool rooms up to 20sqm. The dehumidifier feature has the ability to extract up to 20L a day. This will help prevent health problems that can arise from condensation, mould and damp. With an intuitive touch panel for the controls, the device also comes with a remote control so users can choose their preferred setting from a distance. Also with a window kit to help venting the unit out the window, the device comes with a 24-hour timer and a sleep mode to keep users cool throughout the night. Alternatively, Argos has slashed the price of the Bush 5K Air Conditioner down from £350 to £280. Saving shoppers £70, this device comes with cooling, fan and dry modes that can be controlled through a remote. Also featuring a sleep mode and 24-hour timer, this device is said to be easy to set up and move. Over on Amazon, the retailer is selling the EUHOMY 7000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for the slightly lower price of £199.99. This device is said to be able to bring cool mid-sized rooms to their desired temperature 60 per cent faster than standard units. Back on Appliances Direct, the electriQ Air Conditioner currently boasts a 4-star rating from over 1,500 reviews. Many shoppers have raved about its compact size and how easy the device is to operate, however some had contrasting views over the noise of the device. One five-star reviewer wrote: "I love my portable air con unit and it's extremely quiet so doesn't keep me awake at night. It's so easy to clean and very stylish to look at. I can thoroughly recommend this appliance." With another added: "This Electriq 8000 is not too large and works really well in the smaller spaced room. It feels well made and easy to operate. It does the job." However, one shopper left a mixed review, writing: "Good Points: Cools the room well and a godsend when trying to sleep on a hot night. Improvement Points: Very noisy despite it being lower Db than many on the market." While another wasn't impressed with the noise: "It's quite loud and I wish there was a lower fan speed so when you're at a temp you don't have to be blasted." Despite this, a further five-star reviewer commented: "It's lighter than most AC and it's cheaper and I think quite effective at cooling a bedroom." And another happy customer said: "Works effectively to cool down a room which has been very helpful during the heatwaves we have been having. Makes it much easier to sleep once the room has been cooled, with a fan then used to maintain a lower temperature. Recommended." 'I bought an air conditioner and it's saving me from the heatwave'

After researching air conditioners for ages, I'm glad I opted to buy a portable one last year It's another hot one for Brits this week with temperatures reaching highs of 33C in some areas. This means people will be grabbing fans, thinner clothes and anyway possible to keep cool in this stuffy and humid weather. However, this year, I don't need to worry about any of that within my home - and it's because of a portable air conditioner I bought last year. If it sounds like I'm bragging, it isn't because I want to; it's more that it has completely changed my life when the hot weather comes - and it might do the same for others. I was also extremely sceptical at first - as you probably are reading this - worrying about energy usage, the cost and the noise that comes with it. But so far during this heat and last year's hot, albeit short, heatwave it has been a lifesaver - and I can not recommend it more to anyone else. I bought this MeacoCool MC Series Pro 10000 CH BTU Portable Air Conditioner for around £400 at Costco and despite it being an expensive purchase, it has more than pulled its weight in terms of keeping me and my partner cool in the home, especially when we work from home. When it comes to choosing the right air conditioner, most homes will do fine with this 7000BTU unit for £329.99 - but for those who have a larger room or space to cool, I recommend going for the same 10000 BTU unit I bought here for £429. Air conditioning capacity is commonly measured by "BTU" which stands for British Thermal Units. BTU is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. The size of the room you want to cool depends on the amount of BTU power your air conditioner should have. I went with a 10000 BTU machine to cool the upstairs of my home - mostly my bedroom - so I could sleep peacefully at night. The first thing you should do is measure the square footage of your room by using a BTU calculator like this one, then go for air conditioners with that BTU. I personally went up slightly in case I wanted to cool larger rooms within my home, like the living room - which I suggest shoppers do too. For the past week, I've had the unit run on Dry Mode which is a cooling dehumidifier which takes the moisture out of the room and cools it - making it feel less muggy and humid. It's a brilliant feature to have before you go to bed - but you do need to attach a hose and bucket so it can get rid of the moisture in the home. Then there is the Cool Mode that does what it says. It shoots super cold air across the hall and within half an hour, it makes the heat so much more manageable - and less like I'm cooking in a microwave oven. It's one of the best purchases I have made - and I would do it again. Alternative wise, AppliancesDirect has this 12000BTU unit from electriQ for £329 or this £284.95 12000BTU one from Costway. However, it's not all sunshine and rainbows with air conditioners like these. Despite these units being energy efficient, they do eat a lot of juice when it comes to electricity - but when I'm hot, I don't mind my bill spiking a bit to feel more comfortable. Portable air conditioners are also noisy. Don't underestimate me when I say how noisy it is. My partner and I regularly fall asleep with it on for an hour or so. We've managed to get used to the noise - but it took us a while because it is VERY noisy. There's also the need of handing of large house outside the window - which can be fiddly and annoying. But for the comfort it brings during hot times like this, I am more than happy to accept the extra cost and noise - just to not feel like I'm melting like an ice cream.
