Electric buses to be operational under Rapid Bus starting 2026
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook (fourth from left) and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd CEO Azharuddin Mat Sah (fourth from right) with a new diesel bus received by the public transport operator. GOMBAK : Electric buses will be operational under Prasarana Malaysia Bhd's Rapid Bus network beginning next year, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. He said the selected vendor, appointed through a previous tender process, had been given 12 months to complete the assembly of the electric buses. The initiative is also being supported by the development of key infrastructure. 'This initiative is backed by the construction of charging facilities, along with technical and maintenance training, which are currently underway,' he told reporters after the launch of new diesel buses at the Rapid Bus Complex in Batu Caves. Also present were Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and CEO Azharuddin Mat Sah and transport ministry secretary-general Jana Santhiran Muniayan. A total of 310 diesel buses will be delivered to Prasarana in stages until early next year, with 70 of them set to operate in Penang. These buses will be the last batch of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, pending the full transition to electric buses. Loke said the government had mandated that the assembly of electric buses be carried out locally, in collaboration with Malaysian companies. 'We've set a condition that while the electric vehicle technology may come from abroad, the buses must be assembled in Malaysia. 'This is crucial not only to benefit from the technology but also to support local companies and revitalise the domestic bus assembly industry,' he said.

City of Winnipeg still waiting on full delivery of electric bus order
The City of Winnipeg is still waiting for some of the electric buses it ordered. A report to the finance committee said all of the 16 zero-emission buses in the city's initial order should have arrived by June 20. But as of Monday, the city said it's still waiting for three battery-electric buses to arrive from New Flyer Industries. Finance chair Jeff Browaty says he's frustrated, because the city made efforts to work with the local company. "The fact that these buses are made in Winnipeg, it's a shining example of a really great Winnipeg success story," Browaty said. "So a little frustrating when we do our best to work with them and we're not getting the buses in a timely way." The company blames supply chain problems, as well as production issues for the delay, according to the report. "Supply chain disruptions, build quality, and compliance issues continue to result in late bus deliveries," Jesse Crowder, the city's manager of asset management, wrote in the report. In 2022, the city, province and federal government signed an agreement worth $276.6 million to supply Winnipeg Transit with new buses. Under the Investing in the Canada Infrastructure Program, the city committed to buying approximately 100 zero-emission buses, which would equal 15 per cent of the city's fleet by 2027. Longer term, the city set the goal of replacing its entire fleet with zero-emission buses by 2045. The buses include a mix of fuel cell electric, which charge with hydrogen, and battery electric, which can be plugged into a charger. In November 2024, the city announced it would scale back its plans, due to rising costs and other demands on city finances. The first hydrogen fuel cell bus arrived in February.

EV buses join Perth's wider suburban network, 'milestone' for diesel phase-out
The first fleet of electric buses has entered Perth's wider suburban network, with the WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti labelling it an important milestone in the government's push to phase out diesel. Eleven of the electric vehicles are ready to operate out of Transperth's Malaga depot, which is undergoing a $12 million upgrade to allow for the new infrastructure. Sixteen chargers have already been installed at the depot and a further 90 are expected to be added by the end of September. According to the government, the upgrade will see the depot become the state's largest EV bus charging complex, and has already included the installation of solar panels and batteries to power the facility. "A few weeks ago we announced the last diesel bus to come out of the Malaga depot in relation to its manufacture, so the last diesel bus produced in WA has already occurred." The minister said it was hoped the final diesel bus would exit the network by 2043. The electric buses use imported parts from Sweden, before being locally assembled at another facility in Malaga. Ninety of them set to be deployed across Perth over the next eight months. Each electric bus can travel up to 300 kilometres on a single charge, which the government said saved about 40 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. High frequency bus routes, like the 960 and 950, will be among the first to be serviced by the fleet at the Malaga depot, alongside routes passing through the Morley Galleria shopping centre and Ballajura and Morley train stations. An initial rollout of the vehicles began in Perth's CBD last September, with 18 added to the CAT Bus routes, which also saw Elizabeth Quay Bus Depot fitted out with new charging infrastructure. Ms Saffioti said EV upgrades to other depots were already underway, or planned for, at the Karrinyup and Claisebrook bus depots, with a new EV bus depot set for Bayswater. "Not only are electric buses cleaner and better for the environment, they're also cheaper to operate in the long term, which means better value for money for WA taxpayers," Ms Saffioti said. "It's 22,000 litres of diesel per bus per year, so massive savings." The Liberals said they would be watching the rollout of the new buses closely. "We are obviously looking to see how that rollout goes, noting there have been some concerning issues with the C-series trains that have been manufactured on this government's watch," shadow cabinet minister Liam Staltari said. Mr Staltari was referring to a recent union survey of train drivers that highlighted concerns over the comfort and braking ability of the C-series trains. In response, the Public Transport Authority said there were no braking issues on the trains, stating the C-Series had excellent acceleration and braking features. In parliament, Ms Saffioti defended the C-series and said there was always going to be an adjustment period for the drivers.

BYD to invest $94 million to triple electric bus output in Hungary
BUDAPEST, June 27 (Reuters) - Chinese automaker BYD ( opens new tab will invest 32 billion forints ($94 million) in a new plant in the northern Hungarian town of Komarom, tripling its annual capacity to 1,250 electric buses and trucks, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said. Under right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Hungary has become an important trade and investment partner for China, in contrast with some other European Union nations considering becoming less dependent on the world's second-largest economy. "We Hungarians do not consider East-West cooperation a threat, but rather an opportunity, a big opportunity," Szijjarto was quoted as saying on Friday, adding that the government would support the project with a 3.1 billion forint grant. Orban, who has spearheaded a drive in central Europe to bring Chinese EV and battery manufacturing plants to Hungary, has said his landlocked country did not want to be squeezed into either bloc and wanted to keep trading with both sides. BYD, which is also building an electric car factory in southern Hungary and expects to establish a European centre in the country, will establish a research and development laboratory alongside its latest investment in an apparent reward for Hungary's condemnation of European tariffs on Chinese EVs. Orban started bringing his country closer to Beijing after he came to power in 2010. Warm political relations turned into investments about a decade later when battery and EV makers started to bring production to Hungary. Szijjarto said Hungary had received nearly a third of Chinese inward investment into Europe last year, lifting the total volume of Chinese investments to 5.5 trillion forints ($16 billion), representing 64 large projects. ($1 = 340.08 forints)
