Think again before clicking 'unsubscribe' on spammy emails. See safer options.

A word to the wise: That "click to unsubscribe" link at the bottom of those unwanted email newsletters and new product announcements may do the exact opposite of what you'd hoped. TK Keanini, CEO at cybersecurity software seller DNSFilter, recently told the Wall Street Journal that clicking the "unsubscribe" link in hopes of getting off annoying email lists could do more harm than good, if you happen upon the wrong one. Instead of adding users to a "do not send" register, the links could instead send them to a mock landing page or give scammers the exact confirmation they were looking for, allowing them to pick out better potential victims, according to Keanini and DNSFilter, per the outlet. Here's what to know about safely freeing yourself from a cluttered inbox full of spam. At least one in every 644 "click here to unsubscribe" links led to potentially malicious websites, DNSFilter found, per the WSJ. While some may be looking for people to input personal information, such as an email address or other account details under the guise of "unsubscribing," others are simply testing to see if you are paying attention. Like with spam callers who repeatedly call but leave no message or follow-up, some of these links serve the purpose of simply telling the person on the other end that you have received, looked at and clicked on items within their messages. An individual's initial click may not lead to imminent doom, but it can identify them as a potential future email service providers and platforms have a built-in unsubscribe feature that does not require interacting with any shady links. The easiest and most common are the 'list-unsubscribe headers," the banner with a hyperlink from your mail provider that is usually positioned in or right above or below an email's header. Clicking through this should allow you to unsubscribe from repeat emails without going to an external website. On the other hand, if the email or sender is one you never want to see again, you can simply mark either as spam, delete the unwanted message and block the sender's email address. You can even block a sender's IP address in case they send those annoying blasts from several different accounts. You can also set up manual filters for emails that will automatically divert them to your spam box, or if you want to keep things even more contained, set up a separate email address to use when interacting with potentially spammy sources. Some services even have a built-in email hiding option, like Apple's 'Hide My Email." This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Want to get off email lists? Do this, don't click 'unsubscribe'

Through the acquisition, Mesh's email security technology and capabilities will be integrated into Bitdefender's extended detection and response (XDR) platform and managed detection and response (MDR) services. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Email remains the most exploited attack vector and serves as an entry point for ransomware, phishing, and business email compromise (BEC). According to the FBI Internet Crime Report 2024, businesses reported nearly $2.8 billion in losses due to BEC scams in 2024. Additionally, the 2024 Bitdefender Cybersecurity Assessment Report (based on a global survey of 1,200 cybersecurity professionals) identified phishing and social engineering as the top threats impacting their organization. The acquisition will incorporate Mesh's email security capabilities into Bitdefender GravityZone, the company's flagship unified security, compliance, and risk analytics platform. Mesh employs a dual-layered approach to email security, combining perimeter-based protection via a secure email gateway (SEG) with mailbox-level defense through API-based deployment. Microsoft Confirms Outlook Emails Are Crashing — Here's The Fix

Email remains a crucial part of our personal and working lives, and when it goes wrong, the impact it has can be devastating. Which is why keeping your email secure against attackers is vital, with recent warnings from Microsoft about files that Outlook users must not open, and account password compromise, being cases in point. It's also why updating Windows and applications in a timely fashion is so important. Sometimes, however, those updates can introduce new disruptive issues of their own. Such would appear to be the case with a recent update to Microsoft Outlook which, it has now been confirmed, has left some users facing emails that crash when the user opens them or attempts to start writing a new message. Although there isn't a new update to fix the old update as of yet, Microsoft has now issued a temporary fix. Here's what you need to know. First things first, although it is understandable to think that someone might have hacked your system or Outlook application, and that it is malware causing your messages to crash when you try to read or create them, that's not the case here. Microsoft has confirmed that, as far as Outlook crashing when opening or starting a new email is concerned, 'this issue occurs because Outlook cannot open the Forms Library.' A June 16 Microsoft Outlook support posting, stated that while the classic Outlook crashes can occur to Outlook users on all Microsoft 365 Office channels, it would appear the most significant factor is those who are using a virtual desktop infrastructure. It has been reported that those most at risk seem to be users who have updated Outlook for Microsoft 365 starting with version 2504.'This issue has been escalated for investigation,' Microsoft said, adding that it will update the support posting when more information is known. Although it is to be hoped that a new update to fix the Microsoft Outlook email message crashing problem will emerge sooner rather than later, there is a workaround that can be applied right now. Microsoft recommends that those users who are affected should create a FORMS2 folder at: C:Users\AppDataLocalMicrosoftFORMS2. To do this, close Microsoft Outlook and all other Office applications. Select Start \> Run and enter the path %localappdata%Microsoft and select OK. In the File Explorer menu, select New \> Folder and name it FORMS2. Your Microsoft Outlook emails should no longer crash after applying this temporary fix. Good luck.
