Kate Hudson confesses she nearly sought emancipation from famous mum Goldie Hawn
Kate Hudson considered being emancipated from her parents, Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, to better her Hollywood career. At the Newport Beach TV Fest, Hudson revealed she was offered a small part in an unnamed project and almost 'divorced' her parents before landing her breakout role in Party of Five. 'I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult. My mum was like, 'No, never happening,' but then I got the Party of Five and it was so great,' Hudson said during The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast panel. The teen drama series aired in 1994 and followed the Salinger siblings after their parents died in a car crash, leaving the oldest brother Charlie, played by Matthew Fox, to be their caretaker. Hudson was a guest star during the second season as the character Cory. 'I was 16 and obsessed with P arty of Five, so walking onto that set was like, I couldn't believe that I was going to have a guest role on it, a day player role,' she said. 'I was like, oh. It was so fun.' Hudson did not become emancipated from her parents, but has since become estranged from her father. Hawn and Bill divorced in 1982, and she began dating Kurt Russell shortly after that. Russell was a vital part of Kate's upbringing. During the event, Hudson revealed that she turned down an opportunity to star in one of Russell's films because she didn't want to be 'defined' by her parents. Hawn addressed her daughter's struggles at the beginning of her career. Last year, the actress was a guest on Kelly Ripa's Let's Talk Off Camera podcast and recalled Hudson complaining about her parents being the focus of all her interviews. 'I told her, 'The truth of the matter is we have to embrace each other. I mean, yes, you're gonna talk about me, and one day I'm going to talk about you. And I'm gonna be Katie's mother, and that could be pretty cool,'' she told Ripa. Hawn and Hudson have maintained a close relationship over the years. In February, Hudson told the Los Angeles Times, 'I live seven blocks from my mum now, and she comes over every day.'

South Africa's post-apartheid far left has always been a figment of our imagination
According to these people, my decision not to vote meant that I was part of the problem. I have always been conflicted about voting and participating in politics in a way that would not cause a moral conflict. By choosing to be affiliated with a particular political formation, this often landed me in a moral dilemma that somewhat haunted me, because as a journalist, how do I meaningfully provide a voice for the voiceless if I exert my emotions and being towards one organisation? I also decided against casting my ballot as a form of protest, because I had been on the hunt for a political party that would feel like home, in search of a party that was serious about the genuine emancipation of our people. For as long as townships exist and there are those who have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning, to catch two to three buses, taxis or trains to travel to work so that they get there on time, we still have a lot to fight for and the fact that the so-called liberation movement has never earnestly prioritised bringing the economy to the people is disheartening. But after numerous debates about the importance of voting, I have decided that I will be on the hunt for a political party that seeks to address my pan-Africanist needs. I now understand that one can be a member of a party, but not necessarily hold positions. I have toyed with ideas of voting for organisations that seemed to mimic the leftist ideology, but non of them have convinced me to give my vote to them. The recent public spat between axed MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu and his party as well as his former political home, the EFF, has left me believing without a shadow of a doubt that the existence of a true leftist party in South Africa is a figment of our imagination. Confronted by Biko's startling quote: 'Black man, you are on your own.' These words have never rung truer than they do now. In South Africa, the black man exists in silos. If you are unemployed, you remain alone until you take yourself out of that ditch and in the event that the odds are against you and you don't find employment, you stay there and wait for the days to go by until your maker calls you by name. If you are suffering at the hands of a violent man, you will be heard of once your body is found by a passer-by in an open field and you become yet another femicide headline. I could write about these hopeless situations that are the realities of many black men and women until we all turn blue in the face. If we truly did have a pan-Africanist presence in South Africa, we would not be so helpless and hopeless.

Cowboys' Juneteenth Commemoration Sparks Disturbing Reactions
Cowboys' Juneteenth Commemoration Sparks Disturbing Reactions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Thursday was Juneteenth. It's a sad commentary on our society that the simple sentence - even that one word - can magnify and exacerbate the fractures in America ... and even among the Dallas Cowboys fan base. Advertisement Like it or not, the United States of America is distinctly, dangerously divided. And the division - often discernable in stark black and white - trickles down and pollutes even "America's Team." A little history: The land that would eventually become the U.S. in 1776 began slavery in the early 1600s when boats arrived from Africa trading human beings for food and provisions. More than 200 years later the Civil War was fought over slavery, and on June 19, 1865 the Emancipation Proclamation officially ended the practice. To commemorate the official abolishment of slavery, the U.S. began celebrating "Juneteenth." President Joe Biden declared it a federal holiday in 2021. Advertisement But with Donald Trump now in office, America's steps toward fairness have been largely abandoned. Being "woke" to racial issues and acknowledging DEI - which literally stands for "Diversity. Equality. Inclusion" - is a bridge too far for many conservative Americans. On Thursday - June 19 - the Cowboys posted a simple message on their social media to highlight Juneteenth: "Today, we celebrate freedom. #Juneteenth is a day to reflect, educate, and commemorate." The comments to the post are as sad as they are startling. Welcome to America, 2025. Welcome to Cowboys fans, who are ignorant and/or angry about the end of slavery. Advertisement A sampling of some of the worst comments to the Cowboys on X/Twitter: @Amelia_1998_: I'm not black I'm not celebrating it @ShaneMo90317264: It's only the Democrats that's celebrate this crap @TheSpor74149303: At least we can knock out all these made-up holidays in the month of June. Pride month and Juneteenth. @Michael87337190: Quit pandering @realBobStein: Wake me up for a REAL holiday on Independence Day!! @JedRevanWolf: Really I was starting to be proud of you guys. You didn't pander for fake pride month. But then you go & pull this (bleep). Being reminded that human beings can no longer own other human beings triggered reactions like "crap", "made-up", "pandering", "(bleep)" and a public outright refusal of acknowledgement purely because of skin color. Advertisement Said commenter @Twisted_Jeff: It's crazy how many people in the comments still openly support slavery. To which @Bunkednbusted responded: So what? @Boomer_Sooner68: Watching all the ignorance here is mind-boggling. Stupid racists. The post attracted almost 250,000 views and prompted more than 100 comments. Not all of them, thankfully, were hate-fueled. Wrote @sirdavepeterson: Powerful message. Honoring Juneteenth means honoring the journey - the fight, the progress, and the future. Respect to the Cowboys for acknowledging the moment.
