China on high alert for floods as record rain triggers landslides and building collapse
Swathes of China are on high alert for flash floods and landslides as unrelenting rain triggered deadly disasters and forced evacuations in multiple provinces. The torrential downpours, part of the annual 'Plum Rains' season, have swept from the southwest through central China and up to the northeast, prompting red alerts in Sichuan, Gansu and Liaoning provinces. In Henan province's Taiping town, rescue workers recovered five bodies and were searching for three missing people after a nearby river burst its banks, unleashing a sudden flash flood. More than 1,000 emergency personnel have been deployed to assist residents, state media reported. Vice premier Zhang Guoqing urged officials in Hebei to act urgently to protect lives as the rain continued. In neighbouring Gansu province, two people died when heavy rains caused a landslide at a construction site. Dramatic scenes unfolded in Guangxi, where video footage showed a five-storey building under construction collapsing into the Lengshui river as the ground beneath it gave way in waterlogged soil. The river saw its worst flooding since at least 2005, local media reported. In Guangxi 's Pingliu village, landslides destroyed two houses and forced the evacuation of 21 people. The Plum Rains have disrupted travel, with train services to Beijing suspended and flights delayed or cancelled at one of the capital's airports. The Chinese finance ministry this week announced an additional £14.3m in emergency disaster relief funds to support affected regions in Guizhou and Hunan provinces. The allocation followed a disbursement of £16.3m on 23 June. Guizhou's Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, including Rongjiang and Congjiang counties, have been particularly hit hard. Rongjiang, known as the birthplace of China's popular Village Super League football tournament, has suffered two severe floods in less than a week, with the stadium submerged twice in five days. The ministry said the funds would go towards meeting urgent needs, including search and rescue operations, relocation of affected residents, temporary living assistance, and rebuilding of damaged homes. Authorities said the support would help restore daily life and economic activity as quickly as possible in the worst-hit communities. Extreme rainfall and severe flooding, increasingly linked by experts to the climate crisis, are testing China's ageing flood defences and threatening its vast agricultural heartland. Last year, economic losses from similar storms exceeded £7bn. The national meteorological centre forecasts more storms across the north and the west even as the east coast bakes under a scorching sun.

Aerial footage shows scene of devastation after huge explosion at fireworks warehouse
Smoke was seen billowing from a burning pyrotechnics warehouse in California following a huge explosion which caused several fireworks to be ignited. Aerial footage taken on Tuesday (1 July) shows fireworks shooting from the building, sparking multiple blazes across the surrounding farmland. Locals fled to safety as officials placed a one-mile evacuation order due to the 'immediate threat to life'. 'We strongly urge everyone to continue avoiding the area for the next several days so that fire crews, law enforcement, and emergency personnel can do their jobs safely and effectively,' The Yolo County Sheriff's Office said. It confirmed that there were no immediate reports of injuries and that it would be launching an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

CSPD: Speed a factor in fatal motorcycle vs. vehicle crash
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that a motorcycle and a vehicle crashed in the 2400 block of Bijou Street, at the intersection of Platte Place, killing one person on Friday, June 20. According to CSPD, when emergency personnel arrived at the location near North Union Boulevard, around 1 p.m. on Friday, they found that the motorcycle rider, who had been wearing a helmet at the time, had died at the scene. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The initial investigation by the Major Crash Team indicated that the black motorcycle had been riding westbound on Bijou Street when it hit a white Nissan sedan that was exiting southbound off Platte Place. Windy Conditions Fan Wildfires in the West
A wildfire in southwestern Utah destroyed 17 homes, and threatened hundreds more, as it grew to more than 1,500 acres on Friday night, the authorities said. The blaze, known as the Forsyth fire, burned just north of St. George, a city near the state's borders with Nevada and Arizona and about 30 minutes from Zion National Park. The damage was concentrated in Pine Valley, a community of just over 300 people about 40 minutes north of St. George. Hundreds of firefighters and other emergency personnel responded to Pine Valley on Thursday when the fire broke out, but a quick change in the winds on Friday led to the destruction of homes, Sheriff Nate Brooksby of Washington County said on Facebook. 'The firefighters were shocked,' Sheriff Brooksby said. 'I could see it in their eyes. They gave it all they had, and still lost to mother nature.' All the residents of Pine Valley had been ordered to evacuate and members of the public were advised to stay away until the fire was contained, the sheriff's office said. Red flag winds, those averaging 15 miles per hour or greater during dry conditions, continue to drive the fire, according to Utah Fire Info, an interagency team for public information regarding wildfires. According to the agency, 150 personnel had been deployed to fight the fire and 400 structures remained under threat. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. About 500 miles west, in Douglas County, Nev., roughly 25 miles east of Lake Tahoe, the Conner fire exploded to almost 14,000 acres, from 2,000 acres on Friday. The fire started as a structure fire, according to the Bureau of Land Management of Nevada, spreading quickly in windy conditions as dry brush and grass fueled its growth. Resources from federal, state and local agencies from Nevada and California were responding to the fire and almost 500 emergency workers were involved in attempts to contain it. Evacuations had been ordered. Images shared on social media showed plumes of smoke from the Conner fire that were visible from Lake Tahoe, a popular vacation destination that straddles California and Nevada and is home to hiking trails, campgrounds and cabins. Wildfire risk remained high as large sections of the United States were expected to experience a heat wave over the weekend. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sections of the country encompassing parts of California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming were at critical risk of wildfires.
