Egypt secures natural gas supplies to all sectors via 4 FSRUs
Arab Finance: The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is securing natural gas supplies to all sectors via four floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), according to a statement. This move comes within the first pillar of the ministry's strategy to boost production and secure the state's needs of energy. It helps fulfill the demands of the electricity, industrial, and economic sectors safely and sustainably in line with the changing regional and internation energy market. The strategy aims to diversify the inputs into the national natural gas network to include production from domestic fields, pipeline-imported gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Additionally, the ministry signed several agreements with leading international companies to lease advanced FRUs, which will expand the system's capacity and support a stable supply during peak periods. The ministry also highlighted efforts to prepare several new berths and connect them to the national gas grid, sustainably boosting Egypt's gas infrastructure. This will ensure balanced distribution between supply and demand areas to maximize the stability of the national grid. Berths have been deployed at the Sumed and Sonker ports in Ain Sokhna, in addition to the United Gas Derivatives Company (UGDC) berth in Damietta. This comes as part of the final phase of connecting the FSRUs to their designated berths according to the planned timeline. The 'Hoegh Galleon' unit has been deployed at Ain Sokhna since 2024, while the 'Energos Eskimo' and 'Energos Power' are connected to the Sumed and Sonker berths in Ain Sokhna. This is in addition to the 'Winter' unit connected to UGDC's berth in Damietta. Hence, the four units' combined daily capacity during the peak consumption of 2025 will stand at 2,700 million cubic feet. In cooperation with Jordan, a fifth FSRU, Energos Force, is expected to arrive at the Port of Aqaba by the end of July, as it will be connected to the Arab Gas Pipeline. This will add a new gateway to the national grids, enhancing the ability to respond to any emergencies during the summer, with a regasification daily capacity of up to 750 million cubic feet. © 2020-2023 Arab Finance For Information Technology. China hopes to power AI boom with green energy in new data centre strategy
To fuel its growing AI sector and computing prowess, China is integrating the development of power-hungry data centres into its national energy strategy. Under a new action plan released on Wednesday, Beijing would coordinate data centre planning with energy infrastructure in areas and regions rich in new energy resources, to meet the surging electricity demands of high-performance computing facilities. 'We will focus on national hub nodes and resource-abundant non-hub regions such as Qinghai, Xinjiang and Heilongjiang, coordinating existing and new data centre demand for green electricity with local renewable energy capacity,' China's National Energy Administration said. To ease pressure on electricity grids during peak hours, innovative technologies would be used to forecast consumption and renewable generation in real time, enabling data centres to use energy more flexibly, according to the plan. On the same day, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology held a meeting to discuss efforts to advance artificial intelligence and hi-tech manufacturing. 'While nurturing major AI firms, we also need to support smaller, specialised companies,' the ministry said. The move underscores China's ambitions to dominate AI , a sector that is rapidly becoming a significant driver of economic growth but could pile pressure on electricity supplies. Power consumption from data centres was expected to rise sharply as more applications and users emerge, especially following the launch of China's home-grown AI model, DeepSeek. Power demand for AI computing could grow 43 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to a February report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) and Inspur Information.

Namibia Plans Renewable Power Build in Strategy to Cut Imports
Namibia plans to add 93 megawatts of renewable energy capacity during the financial year ending 2026 as part of a strategy to reduce electricity imports. 'More electricity will be generated locally, hence reducing imports and overall cost of electricity,' Robert Kahimise, CEO of the Electricity Control Board told reporters in Windhoek, the capital, on Tuesday.
