From code to cooperation: How the G20 and Unesco can shape ethical AI

Bright future: Unesco's Gabriela Ramos focuses on social inclusion and an antidiscriminatory agenda and ethics of artificial intelligence. (Photo supplied) Imagine a world where technology helps cure diseases, close learning gaps and expand access to public services. Now imagine one where digital tools deepen inequality, automate discrimination and erode democratic values. Both futures are possible. Which one prevails depends on the choices we make today. Advancing at remarkable speed, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a technical debate, it's a societal one. Generative AI reached millions in days, with ChatGPT adopted faster than any previous technology. Meanwhile, neurotechnology, quantum computing and synthetic biology are accelerating, often powered by AI that decodes neural data or drives biological simulations. Open-source models and falling costs have democratised access, with actors such as DeepSeek proving foundational AI is no longer exclusive to Big Tech. Yet many breakthroughs outpace our understanding, raising profound ethical issues. The real question is not what AI can do, but whether governments, youth and businesses are ready to guide it. The answer lies in our decisions. Responsible AI demands inclusive governance, strong safeguards and development centred on human and environmental well-being. That's why I am proud to have led Unesco's work in developing and deploying the The drafting process was led by Professor Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem of South Africa, which was among the Insights from this work are now informing the G20 agenda under the South African presidency, which prioritises inclusive outcomes. This is promising, because the G20 remains the leading forum for international economic cooperation. As a former G20 Sherpa, I am convinced of its potential to shape public policy that improves people's well-being and supports Unesco's core pillars: education, culture, science and communication. South Africa's strategic engagement is reflected in its leadership across several Unesco initiatives, including Minister Blade Nzimande's chairmanship of the Amid conflict, climate breakdown and digital disruption, Unesco, with strong support of members such as South Africa, must remain the ethical compass of a renewed multilateral system. My candidacy for director-general is rooted in this conviction, and built on three guiding pillars: impact, inclusion, and innovation.

Pope Leo XIV Flags AI Impact on Kids' Intellectual and Spiritual Development

Pope Leo XIV warned Friday that artificial intelligence could negatively impact the intellectual, neurological, and spiritual development of young people as he pressed one of the priorities of his young pontificate. History's first American pope sent a message to a conference of AI and ethics, part of which was taking place in the Vatican, in a sign of the Holy See's concern for the new technologies and what they mean for humanity. In the message, Leo said any further development of AI must be evaluated according to the 'superior ethical criterion' of the need to safeguard the dignity of each human being while respecting the diversity of the world's population. He warned specifically that new generations are most at risk, given they have never had such quick access to information. 'All of us, I am sure, are concerned for children and young people and the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development,' he said in the message. 'Society's well-being depends upon their being given the ability to develop their God-given gifts and capabilities and not allow them to confuse mere access to data with intelligence.' 'In the end, authentic wisdom has more to do with recognizing the true meaning of life than with the availability of data,' he said. Leo, who was elected in May after the death of Pope Francis, has identified AI as one of the most critical matters facing humanity, saying it poses challenges to defending human dignity, justice, and labor. He has explained his concern for AI by invoking his namesake, Pope Leo XIII. That Leo was pope during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and made the plight of workers and the need to guarantee their rights and dignity a key priority. Toward the end of his pontificate, Francis became increasingly vocal about the threats to humanity posed by AI and called for an international treaty to regulate it. Francis said politicians must take the lead in making sure AI remains human-centric so that decisions about when to use weapons or even less-lethal tools always remain made by humans and not machines.

First To The Finish: ASU's Pioneering AI In Business Program Has Its First Grad

Rashi Duttagupta is the first graduate of W.P. Carey's AI in Business program. 'We learned how to understand the background of AI without using it first,' she says. 'It was really cool because not only was I building AI tools, but I was learning the ethical practices around using them.' Courtesy photo Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business made history when it became the first U.S. business school to launch a degree in AI in Business. A few weeks ago, Rashi Duttagupta walked across the stage at ASU, officially becoming the program's first graduate. Her journey to that moment unfolded in ways she never anticipated. 'My decision to study computer information systems was inspired by my dad, who once walked the same path as an ASU CIS and finance student,' Duttagupta tells Poets&Quants. 'But I was reluctant to pursue a degree in technology because I lacked passion for it.' When she arrived at Barrett, the Honors College at ASU, she wasn't sure what direction to take—so she decided to give CIS a try. Rashi Duttagupta: 'My tagline, what I try to embody, is 'Creating an impact and leading a legacy'—that's my goal.' Courtesy photo She enrolled in an introductory CIS course with Professor Matt Sopha. 'I just had a blast. It clicked for me. The way he communicates the information—he made it seem fun,' she recalls. Suddenly, everything began to fall into place. Duttagupta initially planned to double major in CIS and Business Data Analytics, a combination that balanced technical skills with strategic thinking. But in her senior year, ASU introduced the AI in Business degree. She already had most of the required credits, so she thought: Why not? 'I just had to take a couple more classes per semester, so I thought, why not just try it?' she says. She had already noticed that AI was becoming a driving force in business. 'During my internship, the only term I kept hearing was AI. So I thought, I need to have some sort of background in it.' Her three majors—CIS, Business Data Analytics, and AI in Business—complement each other perfectly. Some in the field even call them the 'trifecta.' One of the biggest surprises came early on. In one of her first core AI courses, she barely touched her laptop. 'We learned how to understand the background of AI without using it first,' she says. 'It was really cool because not only was I building AI tools, but I was learning the ethical practices around using them.' Outside the classroom, Duttagupta channeled her drive into leadership and social impact. Named the 2025 Turken Family Outstanding Graduating Senior, she served as president of the New Venture Group, ASU's undergraduate consulting organization, and executive director of the Arizona Microcredit Initiative, which helps small businesses grow. 'My tagline, what I try to embody, is 'Creating an impact and leading a legacy'—that's my goal,' she says. Now, she's preparing for her next chapter: a move to Washington, D.C., where she'll join Deloitte as a Business Technology Solutions Analyst. 'This is the perfect synergy between my majors, so I'm really excited,' she says. She starts in the fall, but in the meantime, she's focusing on revamping her small jewelry business—an artistic outlet that allows her to explore something entirely different from tech and business. The cross-country move is a big leap, but she feels ready. 'Moving to the East Coast is definitely going to be a big change, but I went into this year knowing a lot of change was going to happen,' she says. 'I think everything up until this moment has really shaped me to where I'm supposed to go next. I'm looking forward to it.' As part of her capstone project for the AI in Business program, Duttagupta and her cohort developed an AI grading tool designed to streamline and improve assignment evaluation. 'It's live, and other students will get to build on it,' she explains. 'I'm leaving behind a legacy in the sense that future cohorts will refine and enhance its functionality.'
