Fiona Phillips' husband advises against saying one thing to Alzheimer's patients
Fiona Phillips' husband Martin Frizell has been his wife's full-time carer since her Alzheimer's diagnosis. Fiona Phillips' life was irrevocably altered following her diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer's, but the impact has rippled through her entire family as they adapt to their new reality. Her husband, Martin Frizell, 66, opened up about feeling "isolated" and left to fend for themselves in coping with the situation. After three years of witnessing his wife's struggle with the condition, Martin has become an informal expert, learning how to manage daily challenges for the benefit of his loved ones. The ex-This Morning chief shared a crucial insight he's gained: Never say no. He believes it's more beneficial to go along with the delusions than to contradict them and cause further upset. This approach is something he picked up from extensive reading on the topic. Although he confesses it's not always easy to implement, he's been adhering to this strategy, particularly after Fiona became convinced that Martin was a kidnapper holding her captive. Now, when she's extremely agitated, he humours her by pretending to take her back to her deceased parents, when in fact they're merely circling the block. It may seem illogical, but he's found that it's the most compassionate way to handle such episodes, reports the Mirror. However, it's not without its difficulties. Martin recalls a heart-wrenching moment when Fiona looked at him and said the words he had feared the most: "You're not my husband". In Fiona's latest book, Remember When, Martin shares: "The experts say you are not supposed to challenge someone with Alzheimer's when they're saying things that are completely wrong, but it's very difficult when you are in that moment and you are just desperately hoping you might be able to get through to them. "What am I supposed to say when she says: 'You're not my husband!'?" Despite the challenges, Martin tries to maintain his approach. He continues: "Obviously it's not nice [when she says it] – but I don't feel hurt by it because I know that isn't Fiona talking: it's the illness that has taken her mind." Recent incidents involving fears of abduction have led to some of the most intense 'role-playing' yet. Martin says sometimes Fiona becomes so distressed he has to act as if they are leaving the house for a prisoner swap or ransom exchange at her parents' place. Their sons Nathaniel, 26, and Mackenzie, 23, are also drawn into these scenarios. "The textbooks say to never argue with a dementia patient, although even without the illness you could never win an argument with Fiona, so we play along," Martin explained. Martin feigns guiding her back to her parents, whom she believes are looking for her. Both of her parents suffered from Alzheimer's. Her mother passed away in 2006, and her father was diagnosed soon after and died in 2012. "Fiona and I leave the house as if I am taking her home," Martin shares. "We walk around the block as she loudly proclaims, 'I'll never forgive you for tricking me,' and passers-by stare; then we are back home again, where she goes in and greets Mackenzie as if she hasn't seen him for days. She has forgotten about her mum and dad and is happy to sit down." However, Martin, who left his role at ITV to dedicate more time to his wife of 28 years, also aims to offer comfort to others in similar situations, emphasising the importance of trusting one's own judgement. Despite his background in journalism leading him to extensively research the topic and heed expert advice, he maintains that partners must act on what feels right in the moment. "It feels as though I have read a million books and online articles about how best to cope with a partner with Alzheimer's," he reflected. Some of the advice I agree with – but other bits I'm not so sure about. I think you just have to trust your instinct and deal with whatever is thrown at you as best you can in that moment. "By trying to live up to being the perfect Alzheimer's partner, you are just heaping even more pressure on yourself when there is already so much. And every day is different." The day after Fiona's admission that he wasn't her husband, she seemed to rally, displaying glimpses of her once sharp wit. He concedes that at 64, Fiona lives solely "in the present" finding it challenging to engage in conversation as her memory often fails her and she can't recall events from "30 seconds or five minutes" prior. Remember When... graces bookshops this week. The progression of Fiona's condition is evident to readers, from the initial chapters penned over a year ago to the second-to-last update provided by Martin. He ensures, however, that Fiona has the concluding say, even though he had to jog her memory about the book for her to write the final chapter. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Holly Willoughby spotted looking 'happy' as she reunites with This Morning host
Holly Willoughby was all smiles as she was spotted partying with a former co-star recently, and people couldn't help but comment on how "happy" she looked to be having fun Telly favourite and ex-This Morning star Holly Willoughby appeared to be in high spirits at a recent event with a former colleague. Her Instagram followers couldn't help but comment on how "happy" she looked as Holly, 44, shared a clip of them dancing away together. Nostalgic for the vibes of Glastonbury Festival, Holly captioned the post: "Just found this on the camera roll.... Nothing like a bit of @glastofest crowd control @dermotoleary @andrew_chaplin_director. Impromptu limbo anyone?" In the video, Holly and Dermot O'Leary are seen engulfed in the festival spirit, creating an impromptu dance tunnel while swaying to Pulp last month. Onlookers took turns ducking under their arms in a spontaneous limbo challenge, clearly enjoying the moment. The pair, who have both presented This Morning, looked to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, beckoning other revellers to join their dance. Dermot humorously suggested they might even embark on a tour following the positive reception. The post quickly racked up more than 4,000 likes, drawing a flurry of excited comments about Holly's glowing appearance. A fan expressed: "Looks like you had a fantastic time Holly, it's so good to see you so happy and relaxed." While another added: "Oh my goodness, I would have loved to have been one of those people!" A third replied: "Love that you are partying with the general public and just having a good time. "Wish more celebs would be like this, letting their hair down and just being themselves and not worrying about private areas and stuff - just in with the general public." Another supporter expressed similar sentiment, writing: "Holly, a real gem - with people, best way to be. Top girl." A further comment encouraged the star: "Dust your boots off Holly - go girl!" Holly confirmed her departure from This Morning in October 2023 after a significant 14-year tenure, citing personal reasons, saying it was "for me and my family." She had previously stepped back from the show in 2023. Then, in July 2024, ex security guard Gavin Plumb was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years and 85 days after being found guilty of plotting to kidnap, rape and murder the star. In light of her experiences, Holly's statement read: "I have let ITV know today that after 14 years, I will not be returning to This Morning. It's been an honour to just be part of its story and I know this story has many chapters left to go. "Sadly, however, I now feel I have to make this decision for me and my family. I will miss you all so much." Her exit came following revelations that her former co-host Phillip Schofield had departed amid allegations of deceit over a workplace relationship. Holly has since extended her gratitude to those involved with the show throughout her career. Holly stated: "This is such a difficult goodbye, you are incredible and I forever will be proud of what we've done together. Thank you to everyone at ITV for being supportive. To every guest who has sat on our sofa, thank you. "Most of all, thank you to the wonderful viewers. You've been so loyal, so supportive and the very best company every day."

Fiona Phillips shares early Alzheimer's symptoms that she dismissed as menopause
Presenter, Fiona Phillips, has bravely spoken out about being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, which she initially thought was menopause after suffering from 'brain fog' Fiona Phillips admits she had no idea she was suffering from Alzheimer's before her diagnosis three years ago. The former Good Morning Britain star, 64, who shares two children with ex-This Morning boss, Martin Frizell, initially put her symptoms, including brain fog, anxiety and a lack of interest in her marriage down to menopause. However, three years ago she was tragically told that she had the neurodegenerative disease, which both her parents suffered with. Opening up about her early symptoms, Fiona said she had frequent anxiety attacks, "which became almost hourly". She also suffered from brain fog, a lack of confidence when driving and confusion, over the "simplest thing like opening a bank account". She writes in an extract of her book, Adapted from Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer's, which is published in the Mail:"For me it was the sense of brain fog and a sense of anxiety that I could rarely shake off. "The simplest thing, like going to the bank to ask about my account, would send me into a total panic, and there were mood swings too, which meant even I was finding my behaviour unpredictable." Meanwhile, Fiona's marriage was coming under increasing strain. Blaming Alzheimer's for "at least part of it", she said: "I'm sure the disease was at least partly responsible, but at the time neither of us could see it. I just became more and more disconnected from Martin and the boys. "'You've totally zoned out of our family and our marriage,' he [Martin] would say to me." Putting her symptoms down to menopause after a leading expert appeared on This Morning, Fiona was taken in for tests. Martin said: "Dr Newson was lovely. She had a long chat with Fiona and took blood tests. She also put her on a course of hormone replacement therapy. If it was the menopause, then within a couple of months the brain fog and anxiety symptoms should start to ease. But when Fiona's condition failed to improve after a few months of the HRT treatment, the doctor read through Fiona's notes again and then, says Martin, "said the words I'd been hoping for so long never to hear" - that it may be something more than the menopause. After a series of tests, including simple subtraction and being asked to draw intersecting rectangles, Fiona had an MRI, which was inconclusive. But, after she had a lumbar puncture she was told she had early-onset Alzheimer's. Revealing that she and Martin went to the pub for a much-needed drink after the devastating news, Fiona writes stoically: "That afternoon in the pub it had seemed extraordinary that we could continue to live life 'as normally as possible', but that's exactly what we did from that moment on."

Eamonn Holmes rants about 'horrible' former co-stars
GB News host Eamonn Holmes has hit out at his former co-stars branding some of them "horrible" and "fake" during a recent episode of his podcast GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes didn't mince his words about former colleagues in the television industry, slating some as "horrible" and repeatedly calling them "false, false, false". On his latest podcast episode of Things We Like, Eamonn was joined by co-presenter Paul Coyte and tough guy actor Ray Winstone. During a candid conversation, The Departed actor Ray shared insights on his life in Los Angeles and how the Hollywood buzz led him back to the UK, starting Eamonn on a scathing rant about the entertainment world. Ray said: 'I couldn't live in LA, it's constant,' and pointed out: "Even the guy who puts petrol in your car works in the industry. It's like every two minutes, it's all they want to talk about. "We talk about birds and football and boxing, you know, they talk about movies. Hollywood and Los Angeles are wonderful places when you're doing alright, but when you're not." Eamonn, fresh from his departure from his long-standing gig at This Morning, jumped in to sound off on his disdain for phony relationships within showbiz circles, reports Belfast Live. The seasoned presenter, not shy about his feelings regarding people in the biz, spoke in a mocking tone: "'I don't like this character, I don't like so and so, I like that person, I didn't get on with them,'" before hinting at similarities between himself and Winstone, saying, "That's what the business is based on. I mean, I'm like you [Ray Winstone]. I get myself into trouble because if I don't like someone, they'll know I don't like them." Adding fuel to the fire, Eamonn remarked on the frequent hypocrisy he encounters, noting: "And there are so many horrible people that you end up with. People say: 'Oh, he's lovely, he's fantastic'." Eamonn Holmes has recently shared his candid views on celebrity genuineness, stating: "If they say to me: 'What's that Ray Winstone like?' I'll say he is lovely and he is fantastic and people will believe me because I wouldn't say it if you weren't, but so many are just false, false, false." While discussing the authenticity of stars in showbiz, all three men found common ground, although they refrained from naming individuals associated with their sentiments. Rumours once circled about a rift between Eamonn and his former GMTV co-star Anthea Turner during the 90s, but both have indicated that any past issues have been resolved. In recent times, Eamonn has not held back on expressing his opinions about ex-This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield following Phillip's departure from ITV due to a controversial relationship with a younger man within the company. Taking a firm stance on Phillip's troubles, Eamonn commented in October 2024 that he was "absolutely addicted to fame," and explained that Phillip, who remains absent from our screens, "deserves to be in exile".
