The time America almost didn't declare independence
On July 5, 1775 — 250 years ago this Saturday — Britain's North American colonies declared their loyalty to King George III. 'We your Majesty's faithful subjects of the colonies,' they wrote, were 'attached to your Majestys person, family and government with all the devotion that principle and affection can inspire, connected with Great Britain by the strongest ties that can unite societies.'
