Faith Leaders Can Now Endorse. Will That Swing the N.Y.C. Mayor's Race?

Four days after his remarkable showing in New York's Democratic mayoral primary, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani appeared at the Harlem headquarters of a group headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton. He acknowledged the leaders and biblical scriptures that fueled his campaign. 'Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning,' Mr. Mamdani said, a reference to Psalm 30:5, a scripture that is especially popular in Black churches. 'And it has been night for far too long in this city.' Mr. Mamdani did not come to the gathering on June 28, for the National Action Network, explicitly seeking an endorsement from the faith leaders in the crowd. But under a new rule change from the I.R.S., he and his opponents in the mayoral race may be able to secure one without tax repercussions. The I.R.S. said in a court filing last week that houses of worship could endorse political candidates to their congregations without losing their tax-exempt status. The move was initially seen as the agency's formal termination of a longstanding but spottily enforced rule against campaigning from the pulpit. But in New York, the ruling could also open up a new front in the city's heated mayoral race, offering candidates the chance to formally consolidate support from not only faith leaders but their congregations. Trump blames AT&T for tech issues in a call, AT&T says its network did not cause disruption

WASHINGTON :U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday blamed AT&T for technical issues in a conference call he held with American faith leaders but the wireless carrier said its analysis showed the disruption was not caused by its network. Trump urged the wireless carrier's boss to handle the situation and also said his administration may use another carrier's service in other calls. "I'm doing a major Conference Call with Faith Leaders from all over the Country, and AT&T is totally unable to make their equipment work properly," Trump wrote on social media about the call on Monday afternoon. "This is the second time it's happened. If the Boss of AT&T, whoever that may be, could get involved — It would be good. There are tens of thousands of people on the line!" Trump did not elaborate on the specifics of the issue. AT&T said on X its initial analysis "indicates the disruption was caused by an issue with the conference call platform, not our network." The company also said it was working to better understand the issue to help avoid such disruptions in the future. Trump apologized to faith leaders for what he described as a long wait on the conference call. "We may have to reschedule the call, but we'll use another carrier the next time," Trump said on social media. AT&T shares pared gains very briefly after Trump's post and then recovered. During his first White House term, Trump criticized the company, which at the time owned CNN, about the news channel's coverage of his administration. Earlier this month, Trump's family business licensed its name to launch a U.S. mobile service and a $499 smartphone, calling it Trump Mobile, in a deal brokered by the president's children.

Trump vents online about service provider after conference call marred by glitch

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Monday afternoon, the president of the United States was just another person complaining online about his service provider. Donald Trump wrote in a pair of posts on Truth Social that he was trying to hold a conference call with faith leaders from all over the country but was unable to start the call because of technical difficulties. 'AT&T is totally unable to make their equipment work properly,' the Republican president said in a post. 'This is the second time it's happened. If the Boss of AT&T, whoever that may be, could get involved — It would be good. There are tens of thousands of people on the line!' Trump then followed up with another post in which he said, 'AT&T ought to get its act together.' Representatives for AT&T responded to a post from the White House press secretary sharing Trump's complaints. 'We've reached out to the White House and are working to quickly understand and assess the situation,' AT&T said. The issue was resolved and the call started 20 minutes late, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Trump rarely shies away from posting his gripes on social media, whether the target is foreign leaders, media organizations, elected officials or telecommunication companies. The call he was delayed from holding was not on his publicly released schedule. Between 8,000 and 10,000 leaders of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths were on the call, the first of a series that the White House expects to regularly hold with religious leaders. During the call, according to the official, Trump spoke for about 15 minutes and touted provisions in his big tax breaks and spending cuts bill, like the boost to the child tax credit, the Israel-Iran ceasefire and African peace deals he brokered, and the pardons he issued for anti-abortion activists.
