No one killed in the Lake Tahoe boat capsizing wore a life vest, investigators say
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — None of the eight people killed when a boat capsized during a sudden and fierce storm last month on Lake Tahoe in California were wearing life vests, federal investigators said in an initial report released Wednesday. Four members of a family who were celebrating a birthday were among those who died when the 28-foot (8.5-meter) gold Chris-Craft vessel was inundated and flipped over amid 10-foot (3-meter) waves June 21 on the lake's western edge. Weather was mostly calm when the party of 10 left the marina around noon, but within about two hours winds were strong enough to create whitecaps, according to the preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. By 2:30 p.m., as the boat was returning to shore, it began to hail and the vessel ended up sideways to the growing waves. 'The boat took on water and some of the passengers attempted to bail the water out of the boat,' the report states. 'At one point, a particularly large wave overtook the boat.' Two people were rescued immediately after it flipped over. One of the survivors was found clinging to a life vest and the other was wearing one, according to the report. Six people were found dead that afternoon and evening and two more bodies were discovered the next day. None of the people found dead had been wearing life vests, the report said. Four life vests and one life preserver ring from the boat were recovered from the accident site. Hikers on shore called 911 after witnessing the vessel capsize. No distress calls were made from the boat, the report said. Toxicology tests for alcohol and other drugs for the deceased were conducted, and results are pending, officials said. Snow was reported on the shore and a nearby weather station recorded a top wind gust of 39 mph (62 kph) at around the time of the accident shortly after 3 p.m. By 4 p.m., the weather began to clear, and the skies were cloudless again shortly before 5:30 p.m., the report said. The intensity of the thunderstorm surprised even forecasters, who had predicted rain but nothing like the squall that lashed the southern part of the lake. Drowning and other accidental deaths occur each year on the lake, but boating accidents with numerous fatalities are rare, South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Scott Crivelli said last month. There are an average of six deaths on the lake each summer, though there were a record 15 fatalities in 2021, he said.

Teen dies after eating poisoned DUMPLINGS with identity of suspect set to devastate family
A teenager died in Brazil on Sunday, nearly two weeks after his stepfather allegedly served him a poisoned cassava dumpling. Lucas Santos, 19, was confirmed brain dead by doctors at São Bernardo do Campo Hospital, where he had been hospitalized. His stepfather, Ademilson dos Santos, has been in custody since last Wednesday. He told police that he had placed lead in the dumpling that he gave Santos because he was not happy that he was going to leave the family home. Dos Santos is also being investigated for allegedly sexually abusing Santos' two siblings. 'Lucas was hospitalized in an intensive care [unit], in serious condition,' the São Bernardo do Campo city hall said in a statement. 'Throughout his hospitalization, the municipality provided the best possible care.' Santos' aunt, Cláudia Daliessi, told authorities that she cooked the dumplings, which her nine-year-old daughter dropped off at dos Santos's home on July 11. 'He [Admilson] asked me for the dumplings,' Daliessi said. 'My nine-year-old daughter brought them with all the love and care, as I always do.' Santos' mother, Rosemeira Santos, said dos Santos took one of the dumplings and ate it. Rosemeira said that dos Santos then handed one of the dumplings to her and placed one for her other son, Tiago, on a bench because he "was in the shower" and then walked over to Lucas' room and handed him the snack. The family then sat down for dinner before Santos fell ill and fainted about a half hour later. He was rushed to an urgent care center, where a doctor told his mother that he showed signs of having been poisoned, and then transferred to São Bernardo do Campo Hospital. Authorities noticed inconsistencies with dos Santos' answers to a series of questions and obtained an order for his temporary arrest. 'The whole time, [he] tried to place the blame on his sister,' São Paulo Civil Police chief Liliane Doretto. 'He said that it was she who offered them, but in fact he was the one who asked. 'He is the only person who takes the dumplings and delivers them punctually to each member of the family.' Prior to his arrest, dos Santos was interviewed by TV Globo and said Daliessi disliked him because of his skin color. 'She hates me because I'm Black and I'm not her brother,' he claimed. São Paulo Civil Police investigators believe that dos Santos may have been motivated to kill Santos because he was jealous that he was going to move out of the home due to his new relationship. TV Globo obtained a screenshot that dos Santos sent to his pastor in June in which he revealed that he 'even thought about killing' Santos. The city said that it's awaiting the results on an autopsy to determine the cause of his Lucas' death.

Heartbroken mother suffers ultimate tragedy after her two children and fiancé are killed in a crash while driving back from family camping trip
A mother has been left devastated after two of her children and her fiancé were killed in a horror crash while on their way home from a family camping trip. Shaun Ranger was killed in a crash alongside his seven-year-old daughter Baylee and six-year-old son Chandler in Central Queensland shortly before 11am on Sunday. The group were travelling with another adult male when their Holden Commodore collided head-on with a Toyota HiLux between Comet and Blackwater. All four occupants of the Commodore died, while two people inside the HiLux were hospitalised, one with life-threatening injuries. Mr Ranger's fiancé Renee Carla revealed she was just moments behind her family. 'My babies and fiancé all gone after heading home from a great weekend camping as I was minutes behind in my car with my youngest daughter and friend,' Ms Carla said. A GoFundMe has been kickstarted to raise money to support Ms Carla and her youngest daughter, two-year-old Saphora. Family friend Chantel Semple described Mr Ranger as a 'dedicated and selfless father, supportive friend and loving partner'. 'Shaun, Baylee and Chandler were cherished and loved by many and brought so much joy and light into our lives,' Ms Semple wrote. 'Baylee had a cheeky smile, bubbly personality and a love for horses. 'Chandler was a sweet and kind-hearted little boy, full of life and loved the outdoors.' The fundraiser collected more than $23,000 from 308 donors in its first 12 hours. 'I hope to relieve the extra stress and heartache that this family already have to endure by raising much-needed funds to cover costs for funeral expenses and support Renee and little Saphora,' Ms Semple wrote. 'We are all very heartbroken over this unexpected loss and want to give them the send-off they deserve - a meaningful goodbye, surrounded by the people who love them.' Five ambulances and two fire crews attended the scene of the crash on Sunday. An RACQ Capricorn Rescue Service helicopter was initially called, but stood down a short time later. Emergency services announced four deaths at the scene (pictured) and two occupants of the HiLux were taken to hospital Queensland Fire Department confirmed both the Commodore and HiLux were alight when crews arrived at the scene. The Capricorn Highway was closed in both directions while officers from the Forensic Crash Unit investigated the scene. The tragedy brought the state's weekend death toll to 10, including three teenagers who died in a head-on collision in Mackay on Friday night.

Katie Gaudreau Reveals All the Touching Ways She Honored Late Brothers Johnny and Matthew at Her Wedding (Exclusive)
Katie Gaudreau married her high school sweetheart, Devin Joyce, on Friday, July 11, nearly one year after canceling her original wedding following a family tragedy Katie's two brothers, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while biking in New Jersey on the eve of her wedding on Aug. 29, 2024 To make sure her brothers were with her and Devin in spirit when they tied the knot, the couple found several touching ways to honor them during their ceremony and receptionKatie Gaudreau is sharing all the touching ways she honored her late brothers, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, on her emotional wedding day. The two hockey players were struck and killed while biking in New Jersey on Aug. 29, 2024, the night before the couple was originally set to wed. NHL star Johnny, 31, and high school coach Matthew, 29, were to serve as groomsmen. In the wake of the tragedy, Katie and her now-husband, Devin Joyce, postponed their wedding. More than a year later, on Friday, July 11, the couple tied the knot in a ceremony at St. Mary's Church in their hometown of Gloucester City, N.J., followed by a reception at The Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. Katie tells PEOPLE that while it was difficult to navigate the myriad emotions tied to their rescheduled wedding amid such a tremendous loss, she and Devin knew that Johnny and Matthew would have wanted them to embrace the moment and all the love surrounding them. "I know, deep in my heart, that they would want us to feel love — not just their love — but all of it: the kind that surrounds us, uplifts us and reminds us that we are not alone in any of this," she says. Over the past year, the pair — along with their families — have "coped by staying connected to John and Matty not just through memory, but through action." "We've honored the boys in ways that reflect who they were and the joy they brought into the world. We've kept their legacies alive through tributes and doing good in their name," Katie explains. "Every single event or tribute that we do in their honor feels like a thread that still ties us to them. It's not the same as having them here, but it's a way of continuing the legacy of their love and light." That sentiment was reflected throughout their wedding celebration. Katie and Devin included a number of sweet tributes to her brothers so that they would be with them in spirit. The bride says she was inspired by one of her favorite musical artists, Taylor Swift, whom she described as the "queen of hidden meaning." "She leaves us little Easter eggs that feel like quiet whispers only meant for the people who really know. That idea stuck with me as we planned our wedding," she explains. "I wanted to include both big and small tributes — some visible to everyone and some only Devin and I would understand." Along with a Martina Liana strapless bridal gown, Katie wore a custom veil, made by Sara Gabriel, featuring the messages "Love you – Matty' and 'Love ya – John" in her brothers' handwriting. "It's their words, their hands, a piece of them woven into mine to walk me down the aisle and keep me safe, one on each side," she tells PEOPLE. Her "something blue" was a handkerchief, embroidered with the initials "JG" and "MG" alongside two doves. Last year, at her rehearsal dinner, Katie's mom, Jane Gaudreau, gave her a memory locket with Katie's late grandmother's picture tucked inside. She attached it to her bouquet. Jane did the same with her mother-of-the-bride blooms, and added a picture of her two sons. Devin and Katie's father, Guy Gaudreau — who walked his daughter down the aisle — both sported custom suits by J.F. Bedard from Glorius Custom that had photos of Johnny and Matthew inside the jacket lining. In addition, they, along with the groomsmen and Devin's dad, wore socks embroidered with 13 and 21, Johnny and Matthew's jersey numbers. Katie also gave a nod to the jersey numbers with the bouquets. Hers featured 21 standard roses and 13 spray rose blooms, while the bridesmaids' bouquets had the reverse, 13 standard roses and 21 spray roses. Last year, Katie and Devin had intended to play her favorite song, "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers, at the reception. But she says it no longer felt right as her brothers wouldn't be there to dance along with them. Instead, they put together a video montage, showing Johnny and Matthew "dancing, laughing, lighting up every room they ever entered." The video appeared on a screen behind the band when "Mr. Brightside" was played so the brothers would "still be part of the moment, the party, the joy." Katie tells PEOPLE she was set against the idea of having a memory table, explaining, "In my heart, a memory table is for people who might be forgotten, whose absence needs explaining. But there's no one at this wedding who will forget that they're not with us." As an alternative, the couple had their wedding planner, Paige of Kyle Michelle Weddings & Events, design an escort board (used to direct guests to their designated tables) that was made by White Glove Rentals. It featured photos of Johnny and Matthew, "entirely woven into the experience, just like they would have been if they were physically there."Katie notes, "These details may be small, but they carry so much meaning. Each one reminds us that John and Matty are not just remembered — they are present in the most heartfelt, joyful and beautiful ways." Thinking about what her brothers would have hoped and wished for her on her big day, Katie says they would have wanted her wedding to be "absolutely perfect" and for their sister to "feel all the love" surrounding her and Devin. "They would tell me that they are here with me — maybe not in the way I wish they could be, but they're celebrating alongside all of us. I know it to be true," she tells PEOPLE. "John and Matty always celebrated the people they loved with their whole hearts, and they would want this day to be about celebrating the love I've found and the life Devin and I are building together." "Most of all," she adds, "they'd want me to know that their love didn't end — it lives on in every celebration, milestone and moment of happiness in my life, especially my wedding day."
