Maiden international gold fuels Sahil Jadhav's World Cup dream

Kolkata, Aug 1 (PTI) Winning an individual international gold medal on debut is a rare feat, and rising Indian compound archer Sahil Jadhav believes his triumph at the recently-concluded World University Games will fuel his dream of representing the country at the World Cup. The 24-year-old from Maharashtra, who had missed out on making the Indian team for the Archery World Cups in both 2024 and 2025, finally found his breakthrough on the world stage in Rhine-Ruhr after he was picked for the WUG. In the 2025 selection trials for the World Cup and World Championships held in Pune, he had finished sixth to miss the cut. However, Jadhav made the most of his selection for the WUG. He shocked experienced Kushal Dalal, a double Asia Cup gold medallist, in the semifinals before holding his nerve in a high-quality final to clinch the gold. 'It was a surreal moment for me," Jadhav told PTI in an interaction at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence here. 'This win really boosts my confidence and strengthen my dream to represent India at the World Cup. Seeing the flag go up on the podium is a moment I'll never forget." The final against Great Britain's Ajay Scott was of the highest level and what stood out was Jadhav's mental composure. Jadhav edged out Scott 149-148 in a near-flawless contest, as across five ends, only three nines were shot between them. Jadhav dropped one, while Scott dropped two that made all the difference. 'I just tried to stick to my process," Jadhav said on his mental stability. 'My coaches told me to stay focused and I'm happy I was able to do that." A student of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil University, Jadhav had never previously made it to India's highly competitive senior compound squad. WUG at the Rhine-Ruhr in Germany was his first opportunity and he grabbed it with both hands. Jadhav also bagged a team silver. He began his archery journey at Drushti Archery Academy in Satara, Maharashtra, under coach Pravin Sawant, alongside future world champions Aditi Swami and Ojas Deotale. But the path wasn't smooth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his father Rajesh Jadhav lost his job, and his mother had to sell jewellery to support his training. 'Those were tough days, but my parents never let me feel the pressure. Even when I wasn't winning at the national level, they motivated me to keep going." Living far from home hasn't been easy either. 'Initially I was very homesick," Jadhav admitted. 'But I've learned that it's a small sacrifice to dream something big." The SAI NCOE felicitated Jadhav and 23-year-old Shrey Bhardwaj who achieved a rare sweep at the World Police and Fire Games held in Birmingham, USA from June 27-July 4. Bhardwaj, from Jamshedpur, won the recurve gold in outdoor, 3D, and field archery categories. The 3D format is a unique category where archers have to figure out the targets in semi darkness. 'Switching between three different formats is a real test of focus and stamina. To win all three is an amazing feeling," said Bhardwaj, who joined SAI NCOE Kolkata in 2024. SAI NCOE Kolkata trains 49 archers, including two in para discipline, 30 in recurve, 15 in compound section. The six-member coaching staff is headed by Athens Olympian Reena Kumari. In the last two years, NCOE Kolkata archers have won 23 national gold medals and five gold in global tournaments. Brewers overtake Cubs in NL Central with 11th straight win

The post Brewers overtake Cubs in NL Central with 11th straight win appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Milwaukee Brewers are done tormenting the Los Angeles Dodgers but the team kept up its winning ways. After completing a historic six-game sweep in LA, Milwaukee headed up the coast for a three-game tilt against the Seattle Mariners. And the Brewers took the series opener on Monday, extending their winning streak. Milwaukee has now won 11-straight games and 12 of their last 13 contests. The remarkable run has propelled the team past the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central for the first time this season, per MLB. And the Brewers now have the best record in baseball at 60-40. Brandon Woodruff was electric in just his third start of the season. The Brewers' ace allowed two hits and no walks while striking out five in six scoreless innings. Woodruff missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in October 2023. But he rejoined the rotation earlier this month and has looked sharp, giving up just three runs and racking up 23 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. The Brewers' bullpen completed the shutout against Seattle Monday as Aaron Ashby and Grant Anderson combined for three scoreless innings. The Brewers have battled to the best record in baseball Mariners starter George Kirby got off to a strong start, holding Milwaukee hitless through the first 5 1/3 innings Monday. However, the Brewers touched him up in the sixth. William Contreras, Christian Yelich, Isaac Collins and Jackson Chourio all drove in runs in the inning, putting Milwaukee up 4-0. Chourio topped things off with an RBI single in the eighth as the Brewers won 6-0. While Milwaukee extended its winning streak to 11-straight, Chourio now has a 15-game hit streak. He's batting .373 with 14 RBI and 14 runs scored since the beginning of July. With the Brewers' win and Chicago's 12-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee now has sole possession of first place in the NL Central. Just a little over two weeks ago, the Cubs held a four-game advantage in the division. The Brewers are now one game ahead of them. The team has found different ways to win during the hot streak but pitching has been a key. The entire staff has performed well but the Brewers got standout starts from Quinn Priester and Jacob Misiorowski against the Dodgers. The Brewers' rookie All-Star will attempt to keep the win streak alive when he makes his sixth-career start on Tuesday. Misiorowski will face Mariners' ace Logan Gilbert. Shubman Gill breaks Don Bradman's record with 4th Test hundred in England series

Under heavy clouds in Manchester and with scrutiny mounting, Shubman Gill produced the defining innings of his career - a resolute, composed century that steadied India on the final day of the fourth Test and placed him in rare company. He walked in with India reeling at nought for two, having lost both openers to successive deliveries in the first over. The match was slipping away, and so, perhaps, was the captaincy had come under fire - questions around his field placements and bowling changes during England's mammoth first innings were still fresh. But Gill answered in the best possible way: with the bat, in the heat of a crisis. The 25-year-old brought up his hundred with a crisp cut through point on the final morning, having resumed on 78 after battling through two difficult sessions on Day Four with KL Rahul. There was no celebration - just a glance towards the dressing room and a tap of the bat. He knew the job was far from vs IND, 4th Test Day 5 Live This was Gill's fourth century of the series, making him only the third Indian to achieve the feat in a single Test series, after Sunil Gavaskar (1971, 1978) and Virat Kohli (2014-15). More significantly, he broke Don Bradman's long-standing record for most hundreds by a captain in a Test series in England. Bradman had struck four during the 1938 Ashes. Gill now stands also became the third Indian batter to cross 700 runs in a single Test series, overtaking Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 against England at home in 2024. Only Gavaskar's 774, made during the historic 1971 tour of the West Indies, remains began the innings facing a hat-trick ball, but rather than retreat, he countered. His early strokeplay was positive, using soft hands and smart footwork to keep the scoreboard ticking. As the innings wore on, he settled into the familiar rhythm of Test match batting - letting balls go, playing late, grinding England's bowlers innings may rank as Gill's finest yet. The 91 he made at the Gabba in 2021 remains a career highlight, but this knock, under the weight of captaincy, in English conditions, and with India on the brink, carried a different kind of 188-run stand with Rahul for the third wicket was a pillar of defiance. The pair absorbed pressure across two full sessions, saw off James Anderson's spells with the new ball, and gradually shifted the tone of the match. For the first time in the series, a batting pair dominated two consecutive a blow to his fingers late in the innings couldn't shake Gill. He looked in control throughout, rarely flustered, rarely beaten. For a player who had spoken ahead of the tour about wanting to keep captaincy and batting apart, this was a masterclass in separating roles and hopes of saving the match - and possibly the series - now rested largely on Gill's shoulders. But regardless of the result, this century may come to define his early captaincy - not for its flair, but for its timing, its substance, and the calm it brought when chaos threatened.- EndsTune In

Shubman Gill Shatters Multiple World Records With Ton In 4th Test, Becomes 1st Batter Ever To...

Indian cricket team skipper Shubman Gill shattered multiple world records with a brilliant century on Day 5 of the fourth Test match against England at Old Trafford on Sunday. Gill became the first batter ever to hit four hundreds in his debut Test series as captain - a feat that even Virat Kohli could not achieve. Five others - Warwick Armstrong, Don Bradman, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli and Steven Smith - had three each in their debut series as captain. Gill's century on Sunday also means that he now has the most 100-plus scores by a captain in a Test series against England. As a captain, only Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar have slammed 4 centuries in a Test series before Gill joined the illustrious list. Most hundreds for India in a Test series 4 - Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1971 (Away) 4 - Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1978/79 (Home) 4 - Virat Kohli vs AUS, 2014/15 (Away) 4 - Shubman Gill vs ENG, 2025 (Away)
