Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey' Sells Out in Imax 70MM a Year Ahead of Film's Release
Well, that didn't take long. A full year before the release of Christopher Nolan's epic The Odyssey, tickets went on sale to see the Universal event pic film in Imax 70mm film — the filmmaker's preferred format — at 25 or 26 locations over the July 17-19 weekend, in addition to Thursday afternoon screenings on July 16. Nolan's take on the classic Greek myth — starring Matt Damon as the eternal hero Odysseus — is being shot entirely on Imax film cameras, a first for a commercial feature. Within an hour, 95 percent of seats were snapped up, according to exhibition sources, repping about a total of $1.5 million in sales, despite a relatively small pool of seats. As the night and day unfolded, there were reports of tickets being resold on eBay and other sites for anywhere between $300 and $400, compared to an average retail price of $25-$28, said one source. By all accounts, it's the first time in history that tickets have gone on sale a year before a film's opening. The title is a follow-up to Nolan's Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, which did huge business in Imax theaters. There are roughly 16 Imax sites in the U.S. that are part of the offering as of now. The July 17-19 weekend and preview showings are already entirely sold out at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, the Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood and the Regal Irvine Spectrum in Orange County. Elsewhere in California, 77mm seats are almost gone at Imax locations in San Francisco, Dublin and Ontario. Elsewhere across the country, other sell-out Imax cinemas are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Buford, Georgia; Indianapolis; Grand Rapids, Michigan; King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; and Dallas. High-profile locations in Canada, where Imax is headquartered, quickly sold out, including the Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga Square and the Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan, both in Toronto. Across the Atlantic, London's famous BFI Imax is sold out, as is London's Science Museum Imax auditorium. Seats are also almost gone in Imax's theater in Melbourne, Australia, as well as a location in the Czech Republic. Imax screens ponied up more than $190 million of Oppenheimer's total global gross of $975.8 million, or 20 percent. The Odyssey has a net budget of $250 million, which will make it the most expensive film of Nolan's career. The improbable blockbuster success of the atomic energy biopic Oppenheimer proved yet again why Nolan is one of the few directors who can reliably deliver an all-audience event film, and The Odyssey's epic scope and A-list cast should prove a major draw. In addition to Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth. The classic story follows the king of Ithaca as he undertakes a long and perilous journey home to his wife Penelope following the Trojan War. His challenges are many as he spends years encountering a succession of mythical beings, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and travels to the Underworld. The first teaser trailer for Nolan's event pic debuted exclusively in theaters in front of Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth, which opened over the Fourth of July corridor to huge numbers and continues to be a major draw. Releasing the trailer so early is a bit unusual, considering that The Odyssey is still filming, but an all-audience tentpole such as Rebirth provided an opportunity Universal and Nolan's team couldn't pass up, even if the teaser was leaked online. Word of the advance ticket sales were also leaked when certain theater chains jumped the gun and posted notices that tickets would go on sale for the select 70mm screenings July 17. Ghost Killer Movie Review – Action-Horror-Comedy Streams this Month
Action/Horror/Comedy Ghost Killer Lands Mainstream this Month Appearing in film festivals since September 2024, Ghost Killer finally claws its way mainstream with a digital release this month, hitting the US via Well Go USA and markets still to be named by AppleTV+ from July 22. Brought to you by the Baby Assassins team, Kensuke Sonomura (Resident Evil, Hydra) jumps from stunt director and martial arts fight choreographer to film director, delivering a slick dance of an action flick. While Baby Assassins screenwriter and director, Sakamoto Yugo, leads the snappy screenplay. Together, the team known for Japanese slacker action-comedies provides another bit of fun. University student, Fumika, played by Akari Takaishi (Baby Assassins, My Beautiful Marriage), stumbles upon a bullet shell and inadvertently puts it in her pocket. The next thing she knows, the ghost of Hideo Kudo – a murdered hitman – appears to her. And only she can see and hear him. Played by Masanori Mimoto (Death Note, Prisoner of War, MIU404), the middle-aged Kudo believes he's stuck until his murder is avenged. Fumika isn't so keen to get involved. I mean, she doesn't want to kill anyone. Though she does accept Kudo's help when she spots her friend, Maho, getting beaten by her boyfriend. With the clasp of hands, Kudo is able to possess Fumika's body, providing his strength, speed and cunning. While Fumika is in there too, conscious, but without control of her limbs. The weight and responsibility come home when Kudo warns Fumika against meeting a guy she admires. Realizing his skills, with Kudo's help, she decides to use her newfound power for good – particularly against people who prey on others. Except, to help Kudo, they may need to get someone else involved too – the crime gang's cleaner, Kagehara, played by Mario Kuroba (Hard Days, Trillion Game, Our Fake Marriage). It could be a little tricky as he's not a good guy. While it's not as incessantly funny as horror comedies like Shaun of the Dead or as goofy-funny as Sugar Street Studio, it certainly has its humorous moments, particularly when Fumika argues with the Kudo inside her body, switching tone and demeanor. She does a fantastic job juggling both roles and appearing Kudo-like as needed – there's not a moment when you question who's in charge. There are also some brilliantly choreographed fight scenes alternately shown as either Fumika or Kudo involving a bevy of weapons and opponents. Although currently unrated, except for the horror concept, fighting and a lot of smoking, it's not more than drastic than PG-15. The comedy easily tempers the blood and guts. Pregnant Vanessa Kirby and co-star Julia Garner look dazzling in all blue at Fantastic Four: First Steps premiere in London
Vanessa Kirby and Julia Garner looked as glamorous as ever for the UK premiere of Fantastic Four: First Steps in London on Thursday. The red carpet event comes ahead of the film's release in UK cinemas later this month, with the much-anticipated movie also starring Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. Napoleon actress Vanessa, 38, kept her baby bump covered for the evening in a loose and frilly light blue number while letting her blonde locks flow past her shoulders. Slipping into a pair of high heels, the actress looked utterly dazzling in the dress as she posed for photos on her arrival. While Julia, 31 - who shot to fame as Ruth Langmore on Ozark - matched her co-star in a similarly stunning blue dress. The leading ladies posed for photos alongside their co-stars, including director Matt Shakman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ralph Ineson (L-R) With her short blonde hair slicked to the side, the American star displayed a hint of her abs in the sweeping gown while sporting a matching blue bralette. The leading ladies posed for photos alongside their co-stars, including Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Backhrach, Joseph Quinn and Ralph Ineson. And during a press event with MailOnline and other publications, the cast revealed the fun title of their group chat. 'It's called ABBA,' Pedro, 50, revealed. Before Vanessa chimed in: 'We were brainstorming famous foursomes'. Pedro then amusingly quipped: 'I created it so they didn't really have a choice'. Pascal - who plays the protagonist Mr. Fantastic in the blockbuster - seemed in great spirits on the night as he was seen bursting into laughter while posing for photos. The actor looked typically dapper in a baggy black suit while covering his eyes with a pair of orange-tinged sunglasses. Keeping in tune with other cast members' blue theme was Joseph Quinn, 31, who arrived at London's South Bank in an eye-catching ensemble which he teamed with some black shoes. While Ebon Moss-Bachrach, 48, kept his outfit simple for the occasion, with the American actor undoing his top button underneath a simple black suit. After settling down inside the venue, the star-studded cast were treated to a performance from Myleene Klass, 47, who took to the stage alongside composer Michael Giacchino in the beaming London sunshine. Produced by Marvel Studios, Fantastic Four: First Steps is intended to be the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. Directed by Matt Shakman, the movie sees the Fantastic Four protect their 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world from the planet-devouring cosmic being Galactus. At the movie's German premiere on Wednesday, Vanessa Kirby looked every inch the stylish mother-to-be as she displayed her baby bump in a sleek black dress. She teamed her fashionable, high-necked gown with towering black heels and dazzling silver drop earrings. Vanessa first revealed she was pregnant with her child last month as she showed off her bump at The Fantastic Four photocall in Mexico. Last December it was reported she was engaged to her boyfriend Paul Rabil after two years together. The beauty, who starred as Princess Margaret in Netflix's The Crown, was allegedly set to head down the aisle with lacrosse player love, 39, after he popped the question, according to Page Six. MailOnline contacted representatives of Paul and Vanessa for comment. Vanessa and Paul first sparked dating rumours walking hand-in-hand through New York City in October 2022. However, they didn't make their romance Instagram official until November 2023. At the time, American Paul - who is the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League - shared a series of photographs of the couple including one of them embracing on a beach. 'From the very minute we first met in Des Moines, around the world and back, life is far better, more purposeful and more beautiful with you,' he wrote about the film star. The couple have been spotted on several occasions together since 2022, but had kept quiet about their blossoming romance. Paul previously dated Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez and was married to fellow sportswoman Kelly Berger, from 2014 until 2017. In April 2022, Vanessa was linked to Christopher Abbott after the pair were spotted enjoying a drink at a trendy bar in London's Soho. The pair, who met when they played a married couple in 19th Century romantic drama The World To Come in 2020, were deep in conversation at Ducksoup. An onlooker said the stars 'looked super comfortable in each other's company' as they drank wine and chatted for a couple of hours at an outside table. Vanessa previously dated Callum Turner after they starred in 2014's Queen And Country.
