‘Squid Game' Season 3: Reviews warn of a divisive WTF sprint to the finish line
Let the games... end! Four years after it took the world by storm, Squid Game is throwing in the towel. The South Korean sensation just dropped its third and final season on Netflix, bringing the story of debtor-turned-liberator Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to a conclusion. "It's a mixture of everything you can imagine. It's more brutal, more violent. It'sdarker, and even funnier," show creator told Gold Derby last month. "If I have to pick one season out of all three [as] my favorite, the best season is going to be Season 3." More from Gold Derby 'F1: The Movie' - Instant Oscar predictions The Emmys have one last chance to make things right with 'The Comeback' But do critics agree with Hwang? Opinions on the final six episodes — particularly the big denouement — are all over the map. Take Rebecca Nicholson writing in The Guardian that the series ends on a "moment so WTF and genuinely surprising that I bet my editor a serious amount of money she wouldn't be able to guess what happens." "Such reckless gambling is the sort of behaviour that would land me in Squid Game in the first place, so it just shows that nobody here has learned any lessons from it whatsoever," she continues. "The final two episodes have a nicely grand and operatic feel to them, and ultimately, Squid Game does its job. But it leaves the impression, too, that it has become a more traditional action-thriller than it once was." But Indiewire's Ben Travers is more on board with where the series goes in its grand finale. "While the general vibes are dour (there's very little room left for humor), Squid Game delivers enough closure to satiate anyone still perched on the edge of their seat, and its brief, fleeting bursts of light frame the darkness with the starkest truths." Time's Judy Berman is similarly ready to award a medal to the show's final sprint, singling out the second episode, "The Starry Night," for particular praise. "This is the kind of episode that will surely thrill fans and inspire recappers to dissect the ethical and emotional dimensions of each unthinkable choice," she teases. "Welcome to the exhilaratingly brutal last chapter of Squid Game, which ensnares viewers with characters and storylines we can't help but care about, then implicates us for treating a sadistic spectacle as entertainment."Over in The Hollywood Reporter, though, Angie Han knocks the series for an "unsatisfying" finish. "It brings me no pleasure to report that the third and thankfully last of Squid Game seasons only confirms that we, like Gi-hun should've left that cursed island behind for good after his first victory," she writes, later adding: "By the time Squid Game finally crawls over the finish line, there's no sense of the triumph you might get from completing a really good story — only of relief that this entire grueling experience is finally over." Look no further than Rotten Tomatoes to get a sense of the polarizing nature of Season 3: The aggregated critical reviews have resulted in a strong score of 88 percent but, the users "Popcornmeter" clocks in with a woeful 39 percent, indicating fans have not responded well. As Vulture's Roxana Hadadi puts it, Squid Game probably should have remained a "one-season wonder," instead of coming back for more. "There's an increasing repetition to how Squid Game plays out, a rehashing of the original idea instead of a deepening of it," she notes. "The payoff is in the metatext, in how Squid Game aimed its contempt outward through the existential dilemma of its own popularity." Some Bad News About Outer Banks' Season 5 Release Date
Outer Banks Netflix has proudly declared that the fifth and final season of Outer Banks has begun production, with a new set photo of the group in costume minus (spoilers) JJ, who was killed off in season 4, barring some sort of miraculous resurrection. So, good news, right? Well, not if you were hoping this meant that Outer Banks season 5 would arrive any time soon. While it's great that production is starting now, this is a wild nine months after airing of season 4, and with how long it takes to actually film and produce a show like this, that's bad news for its overall release date timeline. Outer Banks season 4 started production in June 2023 and was released in October 2024. That's a gap of 15 months for filming and post-production, lengthy even in this current streaming era. So, if we're talking 15 months from July 2025, if we're rounding up, that's a season 5 debut in October 2026, a full two years after season 4. This would be longer than any gap between seasons the show has had so far. It's not clear whether or not the final season will be broken up into two halves of five episodes as we saw with season 4. But it's likely, given Netflix's addiction to doing this. It's just yet another example of how exhausting these gaps between seasons are in the modern streaming era. There's a new piece from whats-on-netflix that articulates this well in terms of data, showing that the average time between Netflix seasons is 20 months. And that very much hurts these shows: The reasons? More elaborate, expensive shows, but also lengthy post-production, which involves dubbing the show in dozens of different languages given its global reach (this is true for most streaming services, but Netflix especially). It also has to do with actor availability, and in the case of Outer Banks, really all these main actors have been hopping around different projects during these gaps because production takes this long. But doing so can make production take even longer in some cases. Could this change? Now that COVID and strikes are over, it's possible, but we've only seen year-long breaks between a handful of major streaming shows, with only a few points of good news like yearly installments of 15-episode The Pitt, a unicorn. Outer Banks? Not a unicorn. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

'My Hero Academia' Season 8 Trailer Brings Superhero Shonen Series To Explosive Finale In Oct
My Hero Academia's anime journey is coming to an end, with TOHO Animation unveiling a teaser trailer for the adaptation's eighth and final season, which starts in October this year. Based on the manga by Kohei Horikoshi, which concluded its 10-year run in August 2024 after 42 volumes, My Hero Academia's final season will pick up directly after the events of season seven, which saw the start of the final battle between protagonist Izuku Midoriya (aka Deku) and big bad Tomura Shigaraki, alongside an Armoured up All Might against his nemesis All For One. The trailer offers a glimpse at both of these clashes, teasing an epic finale that looks to push both heroes (and villains) to their breaking points. The superhero shonen (animated films aimed primarily at a young male audience) series, created by Kōhei Horikoshi, followed Midoriya, a powerless boy in a world where most people have unique superpowers named Quirks, as he trains to become a Pro Hero at U.A. High School, the top Hero Academy in Japan, under the guidance of his mentor All Might, Japan's most famous superhero. The anime premiered in 2016 and spawned several spin-off movies alongside its now eight-season run, including 2018's My Hero Academia: Two Heroes , 2019's My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and 2024's My Hero Academia: You're Next . A prequel series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes , was also released in April this year and focused on Koichi Haimawari, a young man who becomes a vigilante prior to the events of the main anime. Although there's no official date yet, the eighth and final season of My Hero Academia will debut on Crunchyroll in October 2025. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. my hero academia My Hero Academia Season 8 Toho Animation

'Squid Game' Season 3: Lee Jung-jae says he's "very nervous" about fan reactions
As Squid Game is set to release its final season, Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun, shared that he is nervous about fans' reaction to the upcoming season. Netflix dropped the trailer for the thriller show's final season at its Tudum event last week, confirming that the show will return on June 27. The popular series will continue the story of Gi-hun, as he returns to the deadly games following a failed rebellion in Season 2. "We are going to be releasing it quite soon, and I'm very nervous," Jung-jae told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet at the event. "I know that a lot of you out there are curious about what's going to happen in Season 3, but all of us are more curious about how much you're going to enjoy it," he said. "So, I can't wait, I'm very nervous." Jung-jae, who won an Emmy in 2022 for his role, has led the show through its global success. Squid Game became one of the most-watched shows of the 2024-25, topping the Nielsen streaming charts. Another key cast member, Lee Byung-hun, who plays the mysterious Front Man, also shared his excitement. He said he read the scripts for Seasons 2 and 3 together and found them "perfectly written." "It was just perfectly written. It was such an intriguing and gripping read, and I was once again in awe of director Hwang [Dong-hyuk]'s abilities," he said. When asked how he felt about how the story ends, Jung-jae said, "I'm happy with how it ended, but I know that the fans out there, each have their own idea of what they want to see happen, so I'm really curious about how they're going to respond to it. And I'm very nervous to find out."
