Pittsburgh's brief break from the heat and humid weather continues this weekend

Saturday morning begins with another mild morning across Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia under mostly cloudy skies and some patchy areas of fog. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos The stationary front that has been in place across our area for the last 24 hours or so still remains across, draped across Northern West Virginia just south of the I-68 corridor, but will slowly lift back north today. A weak disturbance moving atop this boundary may lead some isolated to widely scattered storms late this morning through the early afternoon--mainly in the Laurel Highlands and Ridges. The rest of our area should be in the region of sinking air between the disturbance to our southeast and another system approaching our region from the Midwest. Highs today will be in the mid-80s. Overnight, the disturbance in the Midwest will start to head our way, and we'll give way to rising motion after sunset. This will lead to a complex of showers and storms rolling in from the west. This should be a weakening complex as it will be moving in at a time of day when instability will be decreasing. Overall trends in the models have been bringing this complex later and later, so it won't be until after midnight through around sunrise for the best chance of storms in Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia. The main threats with storms will be isolated severe wind gusts and generally sub-severe hail. With the relatively faster movement of storms, this should preclude a widespread flash flood threat, but locally heavy rainfall (isolated 1-2" amounts) is still expected. This complex of storms will exit Sunday morning, but the actual cold front doesn't look to pass through our area until 3-7 p.m. Additional isolated to scattered storms are possible with the frontal passage before substantially drier and cooler air moves in Sunday night into Monday morning. The best chance of showers and storms, which won't be that widespread, will generally be in our southern and southwest counties as the front reaches those locations during peak heating. Morning lows on Monday and Tuesday will be refreshing, with most of our area in the upper 50s to low 60s and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, which is closer to normal for this time of year. This will force drier and comfortable air to move in early next week, leading to mostly sunny conditions on Monday and Tuesday and temperatures closer to normal for a change. It will heat up by mid to late next week with more humidity and storm chances by next Thursday, and especially towards Friday. Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Severe thunderstorms possible late Friday with intermittent rain over the weekend

Patchy fog developed over portions of Calgary and southern Alberta early Friday, at times limiting visibility to less than one kilometre near Medicine Hat. In Calgary, the fog was mostly in low-lying areas and started to mix out by 7:30 a.m. Severe thunderstorms possible late Friday with intermittent rain over the weekend Foggy view from CTV Calgary at 7:15 a.m. July 18, 2025. The first part of Friday will be mild in Calgary with a mix of sun and cloud and minimal winds, but a low pressure system situated in the B.C. interior will move over the Rockies later in the day and introduce some instability. Rain will first show up along the foothills Friday afternoon, with thunderstorms popping up in the early evening west of the QEII and Highway 2. Calgary is likely to sit right in the pathway of this trough, meaning rain is likely later Friday and carry through overnight, with the potential of some severe thunderstorms development across the region. The greatest threats associated with Friday's thunderstorms include heavy rain, large-sized hail and strong winds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely be a part of the weather story for most of the next few days, especially at the start of next week when persistent rain is expected. Severe thunderstorms possible late Friday with intermittent rain over the weekend Due to the counter-clockwise rotation around this initial low rainfall totals will be variable as it pushes back up against the eastern side of the Rockies. Calgary could see close to 20 millimetres of rain by Monday morning. Daytime highs will sit close to 20 C from Friday through Sunday, before dropping down to just 14 C on Tuesday. Severe thunderstorms possible late Friday with intermittent rain over the weekend There will be a return to a more stable weather pattern by the middle of next week and bring sunshine and highs in the mid to high 20s for Calgary.

Freezing fog and black ice on South Island's State Highways 8 and 80

Fog on State Highway 8 presents a risk for motorists, NZTA says. Photo: Supplied / NZTA Drivers in the central South Island are being warned to be aware of freezing fog and black ice over the next few days. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said persistent freezing fog was likely for parts of State Highways 8 and 80 at least through until Sunday, along with hoar frosts and potential black ice on the roads. The area between Twizel and Tekapo on State Highway 8 was expected to be at especially high risk. NZTA maintenance contract manager Chris Chambers said fog was likely to linger all day in some places. "These types of conditions are not new for roads in the Mackenzie Basin area, but it is important that motorists take notice and adjust their driving for the conditions . Especially when there is an increased risk like this over a number of days," he said. "We are expecting the freezing fog to hang around all day in places and there is a significant risk of black ice, especially in the mornings. All of this means increased risk of accidents and injury. It's important that drivers take extra care and slow down in these conditions, increase their following distances and drive with their lights on." Roading contractors would be out checking roads and gritting or de-icing the affected highways over the coming days, he said. However, he advised people to avoid travelling if possible. "We have the option of closing sections of highway, or introducing restrictions, if the conditions warrant it. Our preference is to keep the roads open, and motorists can help us do that by driving with caution or staying off the roads if they can."
