Africa Global Logistics Advances Landmark Port Expansion Projects

Freight forwarding service Africa Global Logistics (AGL) recently secured €230 million in financing to expand the container terminal at the Port of Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo, marking a major milestone in regional infrastructure development. The new 750-meter quay – scheduled for completion by 2027 – will double the terminal's capacity to 2.3 million containers annually and support the country's growing oil and LNG exports. The Pointe Noire project is being executed by AGL's subsidiary Congo Terminal in collaboration with engineering firm China Road and Bridge Corporation. Backed by both international and Congolese banks, the €400 million platform will include 26 hectares of quayside, a dredged 17-meter-deep basin, and the installation of 16 gantries. It forms a key part of Congo's strategy to boost hydrocarbon production to 500,000 barrels of oil per day and LNG output to 3 million tons per annum within five years. AGL will participate as a Diamond Sponsor at this year's African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference – taking place September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town. AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit for more information about this exciting event. In Angola, AGL also launched operations at its Lobito Terminal in March last year. The terminal – Angola's second-largest port hub – handles over one million tons of bulk cargo and more than 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers annually, with 730 employees operating deepwater berths and modern equipment. With €100 million in planned investment, the terminal connects to the 1,300-km Benguela railway and aims to become a vital gateway for copper, cobalt and agricultural exports from the Copperbelt region in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project comes at a pivotal time for Angola, which is preparing to bring several major energy developments online between 2025 and 2028. These include the Cabinda Oil Refinery in 2025, the Agogo Integrated West Hub development in late-2025, the Quiluma and Maboqueiro gas fields in 2026 and the Kaminho Deepwater Development in 2028. Meanwhile, in Ivory Coast, AGL is playing a vital role in Phase 2 of the Baleine offshore development - West Africa's first net-zero emissions project. In partnership with engineering firm Saipem, AGL began manufacturing critical subsea structures for the Baleine field in April 2024 at its Carena shipyard in Abidjan. The works include anchoring systems and underwater fixtures totaling over 200 tons, to be deployed in ultra-deep waters. AGL has mobilized 100 skilled local workers – including certified welders, painters and crane operators – reinforcing its commitment to local content, capacity building and sustainable energy infrastructure in Ivory Coast's rapidly growing oil and gas sector. AGL's recent activities in Africa align with its broader vision to support the continent's energy infrastructure. In addition to the Republic of Congo, Angola and Ivory Coast, the company is currently modernizing the Walvis Bay terminal in Namibia while playing a key role in major energy logistics across Mauritania, Senegal and Mozambique. AGL's Diamond Sponsorship at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 underscores its commitment to building robust, multimodal logistics systems that enable energy development and economic transformation across Africa. Nowlun raises additional $600,000 to close $2.3 million seed round

Egypt-based logistics startup Nowlun has raised $600,000 in a seed round extension led by Ingressive Capital, bringing total funding to $2.3 million. Founded in 2021 by Moataz Khamis, Mahmoud Khaled, and Ahmed Emara, Nowlun is an online freight forwarding platform allowing customers to compare different services and rates that match their needs. Funds will accelerate the development of Nowlun's Smart Logistics Assistant, expand operations in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and enable smarter, faster shipping decisions in a sector still dominated by manual processes. In December 2024, Nowlun raised $1.7 million in seed funding, led by Nama Ventures and A15, with participation from Sanabil 500 Global and other angel investors. Press release: Nowlun, the digital logistics platform that simplifies global freight in the MENA region by helping businesses move full container loads (FCL) and bulk cargo with speed and simplicity—while keeping them informed with real-time tracking and instant updates—has closed its seed round at $2.3 million following a $600K extension led by Ingressive Capital, a prominent African VC. This extension builds on Nowlun's previously announced seed round, which was led by Nama Ventures and A15, with participation from Sanabil 500 Global and other angel investors. The initial funding fuelled the company's expansion into the Saudi market and the successful launch of its Bulk product—a dynamic rates engine that enables instant access to sea freight options. With this new capital, Nowlun will accelerate the integration of AI to redefine the logistics experience. The company aims to empower its internal team to manage more shipments with greater efficiency while equipping them with AI-driven insights across all areas of logistics. At the same time, leveraging both AI and decades of industry expertise, Nowlun is developing a powerful logistics assistant for ocean freight shippers across MENA and Africa. This assistant will offer instant insights and recommendations to simplify decisions, reduce costs, and make global trade smarter and more reliable throughout the region. 'This is more than just funding; it's a strategic push to embed AI at the core of logistics,' said Moataz Khamis, Nowlun's CEO. 'We're building your smart Logistics Assistant—a tool that puts decades of industry expertise in the palm of your hand, helping you make faster, smarter shipping decisions every day.' The participation of Ingressive Capital also highlights the growing role of African VCs in supporting Egypt's startup ecosystem and shaping the future of global logistics. Positioned between Asia and Europe, Africa has long been a critical logistics hub, and investors like Ingressive are actively backing innovations that connect and empower the region. "We believe the future of logistics in MENA and Africa will be built by founders who combine deep operational grit with cutting-edge AI," said Maya Horgan Famodu, Founding Partner at Ingressive Capital. "Nowlun is not only modernising freight; they're reimagining how trade moves across continents with speed, transparency, and precision. We're proud to back Moataz and his team as they build a category-defining platform for the region and beyond." Nowlun is doubling down on its growth in Egypt and Saudi Arabia—two strategic markets at the heart of global trade routes. This investment extension is not just about capital; it's about accelerating the company's mission to modernise logistics in the region. As Nowlun expands its footprint, AI will be the driving force behind this growth, delivering new levels of speed, transparency, and intelligence to an industry still constrained by manual processes and fragmented systems. In a sector where decisions are complex and time-sensitive, AI is no longer optional; it's the backbone of the next logistics revolution.

Seven men charged after cops bust alleged plot to bring in more than 300kg of drugs from overseas - and the shocking discovery in a shipment from Canada

Seven men have been charged after allegedly plotting to bring more than 300kg of illicit drugs into Australia. Since September 2023, detectives were investigating a 42-year-old man and his associates for allegedly importing and supplying large amounts of prohibited drugs and illicit tobacco. The men were allegedly claiming to have the ability to circumvent border controls with shipments coming in from Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Panama. Police allege the 42-year-old man was using a freight forwarding company in Punchbowl, south west of Sydney, to import the drugs. More than 280kg of liquid methamphetamine was located in an industrial cooler imported from Vancouver, Canada, in July 2024, allegedly organised by the man. Police continued their investigation into the man who allegedly continued to use the freight forwarding company. Over three separate consignments, the man allegedly imported more than 20 million cigarettes from the United Arab Emirates. In May, investigators established the man was planning to import 50kg of cocaine concealed in cement bags loaded in a shopping container from Panama. Police allege the man asked two other men - who flew to Australia from Canada - to help retrieve the cocaine from the cement bags and to help supply it to organised crime groups in NSW. Investigators arrested four men at about 2pm on Friday after executing six search warrants in Moorebank, Punchbowl, Smithfield, Doonside and Mt Annan.

Jordan: 348,562 clearance transactions processed in first third of 2025

AMMAN — The customs clearance and freight forwarding sector processed 348,562 transactions during the first third of 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 59,641 transactions, according to data compiled by the Association of Owners of Clearance and Transport Companies. Association president Dhefallah Abu Aqouleh said that the rise reflects 'growing' activity at customs and border centres across the Kingdom, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Transit transactions alone reached 119,148 in the first four months of 2025, up from 69,901 over the same period in 2024, marking an increase of nearly 50,000, Abu Aqouleh said. Export-related transactions also saw moderate growth, reaching 52,357 compared with 49,901 a year earlier, he noted. Abu Aqouleh said that the data revealed that Aqaba customs centre processed 61,689 transactions, an increase of 12,519 from last year. The association president added that Omari customs centre, which serves as a 'key' gateway to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, recorded 85,314 transactions, up 34,797 from the same period in 2024. Jaber customs centre, linking Jordan and Syria, handled 15,846 transactions, a rise of 9,361, while Amman's Madouneh customs centre processed 29,563 transactions, up 5,051, he added. Abu Aqouleh noted that the sector also recorded a 'significant' growth in cross-border truck traffic, where the number of trucks entering, exiting, or transiting through Jaber customs centre reached 58,085 by mid-May, compared with 17,035 over the same period last year. At the Omari centre, truck movement climbed to 113,610 from 102,033, recording an increase of 11,577. Abu Aqouleh attributed the increase to 'improved' performance in Jordanian exports and renewed transit trade momentum, particularly following recent developments in Syria. He said that expectations for continued growth are 'strong,' especially in light of regional efforts to ease economic sanctions on Syria. "The anticipated lifting of sanctions on Syria is likely to generate a direct and positive impact on the customs and logistics sectors, reviving transit trade and enhancing economic activity across related industries," Abu Aqouleh said. He also praised government agencies for facilitating trade movement, noting that customs and security authorities at Jaber border crossing have increased working hours and expedited truck processing, contributing to improved efficiency. Jordan is home to 476 licensed customs brokerage firms operating through 2,000 branches at various customs centres. The sector employs an estimated 10,000 Jordanians. Established in 1982, the Association of Owners of Clearance and Transport Companies is registered with the Ministry of Labour and plays a 'central' role in supporting the sector, resolving operational challenges, and raising professional standards. © Copyright The Jordan Times.
