The 18 best pubs in the New Forest

There's a refreshing lack of 'done up' pubs in the New Forest; the vast majority still have quirky and characterful interiors to match their quirky and characterful exteriors – often farmhouses or cottages that became ale houses and later inns. Some are remote, set in swathes of beautiful heath and woodland; others are tucked into villages; almost all have beer gardens. Everyone, of course, has their favourite: not one of these places is lacking in staunch supporters who will tell you – while leaning on the bar – exactly why 'their' pub is the best. Many of them have rooms and make authentic, inexpensive places to stay. All our recommendations below have been hand selected and tested by our resident destination expert to help you discover the best pubs in the New Forest. Find out more below, or for more New Forest inspiration, see our guide to the region's best hotels, restaurants and attractions. Find a pub by type: Best all-rounders The East End Arms For a pint with plenty of locals, turn right. For a cosy, attractive dining room and posh food, turn left. With walls lined with black and white photographs of well-known musicians (the pub is owned by Dire Straits bassist John Ilsley), this is a sophisticated gastropub with a menu from chef Mark Davison and his close-knit team; dishes include braised short rib or smoked ham hock croquettes.

Coronation Street star confirms closure of restaurant after 13 years in heartbreaking post leaving fans devastated

CORONATION Street star Jennie McAlpine has confirmed the closure of her restaurant after 13 years. In an emotional post on social media, the actress - who has portrayed Fiz Brown on the soap since 2001 - announced the shutters had come down for the final time on her Manchester restaurant Annies. 2 The popular gastropub and bar, located in the heart of the city, was co-owned by Jennie and her partner Chris Farr. It was also held in incredibly high regard, ranking within the top five restaurants in Manchester on Tripadvisor just before its closure. Sadly, the restaurant's loyal fans, who have been piling in since 2012, have now been left heartbroken by its sudden shutting. Jennie and Chris' post read: "It's with a heavy heart that we've had to close the doors to Annies this week. "We want to thank the amazing people, staff and customers who've been part of our Annies journey. "Our whole team will miss all of our wonderful customers, who we have come to call friends." The star also thanked loyal patrons for their support over the past 13 years, sending them their "love and thanks". Annies served a range of dishes to satisfy pallets across Manchester, including steaks, burgers, pies, salads, and fish. A traditional hotpot featuring lamb and crispy potatoes also featured on the extensive menu. Not only had Annies found itself high on Tripadvisor's Manchester recommendations but it was also named among "the best of the best" in the country in September. Beloved steakhouse chain to shut ALL its restaurants after collapsing into administration with no explanation When the review site unveiled its Traveller's Choice Awards Best of the Best Restaurants - which recognised diners' favourite spots for 2024, Annie's was named in the top ten. It had also previously been named winner of the People's Choice award for best tea room at the Manchester Tourism Awards for its range of afternoon teas. Neither Jennie nor Chris have confirmed the reason behind the restaurant's closure, but fans have been quick to share their love for the famed restaurant. One heartbroken diner wrote: "This is very sad news. "One our favourite places we've been too when us girls meet up - we've had afternoon tea, Sunday lunch, theatre and breakfast. "You fit in nicely what ever time of our occasion." Another wished Jennie and Chris well in their next endeavours, adding they were "absolutely gutted" by the news of the closure. They wrote: "It was the only place I felt comfortable in. "The food was delicious, the decor amazing, and the whole place just had a wonderful feeling about it. "I will miss Annie's terribly. It was also such a little busy place." This comes just days after a beloved pan-Asian restaurant chain - known for its trendy dining and cocktails - announced it would be closing all of its locations. PEACH, a restaurant group based in East Hertfordshire, confirmed the immediate closure of both its sites after five years of serving customers. Founders Dan Knowles and Leigh Keates launched the business in 2020, with branches in Bishop's Stortford and Hertford. The pair gave no reason for the closure but said in a statement: "With great sadness, we want to let you know that both restaurants have now closed. "This was not an easy decision and certainly not one we took lightly. "We are incredibly grateful for the support, kindness and loyalty you've shown us over the years - it has meant everything." 2

Chicken peasar salad

Sometimes you just have to jump all in and embrace the pun, but that doesn't mean this spin on the classic Caesar salad isn't a serious recipe. Oh no, the peas bring another level to this gastropub favourite. I scatter in the whole peas and also use some to create a vibrant dressing so you're using all of the pea's natural strengths. Overview Prep time 15 mins Cook time 15 mins Serves 4 to 6 Ingredients 4 thick slices of white bread from a loaf, cut into chunks 3-4 tbsp olive oil 2 skinless chicken breasts 2 Romaine lettuces 250g frozen peas 1 garlic clove, crushed or finely grated 4 anchovies from a tin 4 tbsp mayonnaise ½ tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, or as needed Zest and juice of 1 lemon 15g Parmesan, grated, plus extra (optional) for shaving Method Step Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Step Scatter the bread chunks (from 4 thick slices of white bread) over a baking tray then drizzle with enough olive oil to coat them well. Step Season with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper, then bake in the hot oven, tossing every now and then, for 10-15 minutes or until golden and crisp. Set aside. Step Meanwhile, season 2 skinless chicken breasts generously all over with salt and pepper, then fry in a frying pan over a medium heat for 10-15 minutes, or until lightly browned and cooked through. Set aside. Step Break 2 Romaine lettuces apart and separate them into single leaves. Place the lettuce leaves either on a serving platter or in a large salad bowl, ready to toss together with everything else. Step Place 250g frozen peas in a heatproof bowl and cover them with freshly boiled water to defrost. Leave for a few minutes and then drain. Step Add 1 crushed or finely grated garlic clove, 4 anchovies, 4 tbsp mayonnaise, ½ tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, the zest and juice of 1 lemon and 15g grated Parmesan to the processor, then blitz to a smooth, thin dressing. If you need to thin the dressing down a bit, add a splash of water or more extra-virgin olive oil. Taste for seasoning then adjust with salt and pepper to taste. Step Pour the dressing over the lettuce leaves and peas, then toss in the croutons. Chop or shred the chicken and add that in too, then toss everything together. Serve the salad with some extra Parmesan shavings, if you like.

Wright Group gets go-ahead to turn former Rustic Stone restaurant into gastropub

The Wright Group has secured planning permission to turn chef Dylan McGrath's former Rustic Stone restaurant in Dublin into a gastropub. The permission, granted by Dublin City Council to Mink Fusion Ltd, comes 10 months after celebrity chef, Dylan McGrath shut down Rustic Stone and Brasserie Sixty Six, both located on South Great Georges Street, on the same day on August 15th last. At the time an email to customers said: 'Both have been very successful restaurants in Dublin city for a long time, but the time has come where we have decided it's simply not sustainable any more.' Plans were lodged by Mink Fusion Ltd, a subsidiary of the Wright Group, in February for the change of use application and the council delayed the project in April when it asked what the firm's conservation proposals were for the property which is part of a Victorian commercial development dating from 1881. READ MORE However, in a response, Anthony Brabazon of ABA Architects said that while a 'conservation gain' was desirable in principle it may not be financially feasible and that this could be carried out at a later time. He noted that the proposed works involved no removal of original features. Mr Brabazon pointed out that Mink Fusion 'as tenants under a lease, are paying substantial rent and would like to get the business open'. Mr Brabazon said that Mink Fusion 'would therefore find the onus of a full restoration, which would involve significant procurement of replacement elements as well as the entire shop front screens on two streets, a big obstacle in their goal to bring the unit back to use'. In response to Mr Brabazon's comment, the council's conservation division said it had no objection to the scheme on condition w that a conservation expert was to be employed to design, manage, monitor and implement the works and to ensure adequate protection of the retained and historic fabric during the works. A planning report lodged with the application by Manahan Planners has stated said that a gastropub operation 'offers a more sustainable business model than the previous restaurant, given current market conditions'. The most recent accounts for the Wright Group – led by chief executive, Michael JF Wright – show that its pretax profits increased almost three fold to €10.67 million in the 12 months to the end of September 2023 as revenues surged by 38 per cent to €49 million. The group now employs over 700 people through a collection of over 24 restaurants, bars, food halls, cafes, event spaces and convenience retail.

A village pub that is among the best in Britain is expanding to offer outdoor dining. The Greyhound Garden will be opening at the Greyhound Inn in Pettistree on weekends, starting from Saturday, June 21. The pub, which is owned by husband and wife Will Orrock and Cassidy Hughes, opened in the village three years ago and was recently named one of the county's best gastropubs by Estrella Damm. It uses locally sourced produce to create dishes on the weekly changing menu under head chef Adam Spicer. Customers can expect platters of smoked Sutton Hoo chicken from the wood grill as well as plates of grand aioli served with a variety of fresh vegetables. An outside bar will also be opening later in summer, offering wines, seasonal spritz' and draught beers from local producers. "You have got to put yourself out there, and it is nice to be offering something slightly different. "The garden menu will keep to our ethos of making everything fresh each day and using what is local to us. The quality of produce available here in Suffolk is just so great. "We hope the space will be about a group of friends or family coming together and enjoying a leisurely afternoon with good food and drinks."
