Apology after 200 people turn up for 'wild party' in rental home
The owner of a holiday rental has apologised after hundreds of people turned up for what turned out to be a "wild party" at the house which was booked for eight guests. One of the owners of the five-bed house on Falcon Close in Rochdale, Greater Manchester said booking was made for what they were told was a gender reveal gathering on Wednesday he said he and his co-owner began receiving "concerned messages" from neighbours about loud music coming from the house at about 19:00 BST They arrived at the house and found around 200 people at the property, a live DJ playing and "huge speakers set up". He said: "We tried our best to shut the party down but our efforts failed due to the sheer amount of people at the house and people continuing to arrive."Police were called to the house to move on the partygoers, who then carried on into the streets until the early hours of Thursday, the co-owner said. He apologised for the disturbance, and said the party - believed to have been advertised on social media - was "completely against our house rules" and "not what our [house] was set up for". "We were lied to and were victims ourselves and received around £2,000 worth of damages to our home carpets and furniture," he said. Further measures were being put in place to prevent similar incidents in future, he said. Listen to the best of BBC Radio Manchester on Sounds and follow BBC Manchester on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Pregnant Love Island star Shaughna Phillips left stunned as she learns the gender of her baby and reveals why doctors are forcing her to undergo a C-section - ahead of welcoming second child with jailed boyfriend Billy Webb
Pregnant Shaughna Phillips has revealed she already knows the gender of her baby and took to Instagram on Thursday to share a snap of the moment she learned the news for the first time. The Love Island star, 31, looked stunned in the photo just days after confirming she was expecting, with The Sun later reporting that she would once again be welcoming a child with jailed boyfriend Billy Webb, who is also the father of her daughter Lucia. During a Q&A with followers one asked 'So pleased for you! Are you going to find out the gender?' to which Shaughna shared the snap of herself with her mouth wide open in utter disbelief and wrote: 'We do know the gender, this was my reaction'. She also revealed that was due in November, but said she'd be undergoing a C-Section so would likely welcome the tot a little earlier. Shaughna explained that while she had already planned to undergo the procedure following her now two-year-old's 'rough' birth, doctors had also insisted on it, due to her suffering from a 'low lying placenta'. Reflecting on Lucia's birth she wrote: 'Induction, 2 days labour, pushed for an hour and she was not moving, She got rally stressed and was rushed for forceps which FAILED because she turned around, and then she was rushed for an emergency C-Section and ended up with a postpartum haemorrhage'. She continued: 'So I always said I never wanted to risk that happening again and my baby being in such distress so always planned on having a C-section for future babes'. 'At my 20 week scan that said I have a low lying placenta which means I have tio have a section so ended up not being my choice anyway LOL'. Following the birth of Lucia in April 2023, Billy, 29, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply 4.5kg of cocaine worth at least £360,000. Speaking to The Mirror on Thursday, Shaughna said she got pregnant the very first time her ovulation period had coincided with Billy being at home. 'It was the first time that my ovulation window coincided with Billy being home,' Shaughna said. 'I was like, "You know what? Why not? Let's just see" - and literally, the next day, I said to Billy, "I think I'm pregnant".' She went on to hint that Billy is set for early release and will be here for the birth. Shaughna said: 'I know the date that he's due to be home, but I'm not saying it just because anything could happen - but hopefully he will be fully home before my baby is due.' Shaughna and Billy have been enjoying family days out over the past seven months while he has been on day release from an open prison. An insider said: 'Billy has been in a Category D prison, which means he has been able to spend a fair bit of time with Shaughna. 'He even managed to be home over Christmas, which meant a lot to her and, of course, Lucia. He hasn't been released as many people thought, but he has a lot of privileges.' In Category D prisons inmates have minimal security and those deemed 'low risk' inmates are allowed to leave the site to work, 'resettle' or attend education during the day. MailOnline contacted Shaughna's representatives for comment at the time. Announcing her pregnancy on Sunday, Shaughna posted a video of herself taking a pregnancy test and showed off her growing bump. She also shared a sweet video of her daughter Lucia, two, wearing a t-shirt saying 'Big Sis' and 'In my big sister era' to go with the announcement. Shaughna did not reveal who the father of her baby is as she wrote: 'Adding a little more love to our family…' Shaughna revealed the couple had spent Christmas together in December after the family reunited to enjoy a Christmas grotto together. Sharing an adorable video to her Instagram, the reality star revealed that she and her partner had taken Lucia to see Santa and added she never thought this day would come. She captioned the clip: 'If you had told me this time last year, that me and Billy would be taking Lucia to see Santa next Christmas, I probably wouldn't have let myself believe you 'The best couple of days, this Christmas is going to be so special'. The blonde bombshell has been very open with her fans throughout the ordeal and previously revealed on her podcast Oh, Baby with Shaughna and Holly that she had struggled to come to terms with the situation. She said: 'It's the most gut-wrenching position to be in. 'And, I mean, before I even answer this question, I want to just put it out there that you can judge me all you want, but please don't let me know, because I feel like unless you've been in this position you can't really have an opinion on it. 'Because before I was in this position, before I had a baby, if you had asked me would I ever, ever take my child into a prison, the answer would be absolutely not. Anyone that does that is crazy. 'And then, lo and behold, I'm now in this position. And I think the thing is, we're always going to be co-parents. 'And I know that me and my dad had the best relationship ever, and to me, my dad is the best person in the world. 'And I don't want Lucia to think differently of her father. I would never, ever stop him from seeing her, ever.' What is a Low-Lying Placenta? In some women, the placenta attaches low down in the uterus and may cover part of or all of the cervix (the neck of the womb). In most cases, the placenta moves upwards and out of the way as the uterus grows during pregnancy. For some women, however, the placenta continues to lie in the lower part of the uterus as the pregnancy progresses. If the placenta remains low-lying, you will have an additional scan at 36 weeks. If the placenta remains low at 36 weeks then you will see an obstetrician who will to decide the safest way to deliver the baby.

Congratulations… it's not a boy! How gender stereotypes are shifting as families embrace daughters
PARIS, June 23 — While for centuries it was more socially desirable to give birth to a boy, this 'tradition' is losing ground, or even reversing. This paradigm shift can be explained by recent advances in the fight for gender equality, but also (and paradoxically) by certain gender clichés that are still very much alive. In a society still very much centred around the male/female binary, an individual's gender identity remains paramount in people's minds, even before birth. Indeed, since the widespread use of ultrasound scans in the 1980s, parents have been able to find out from as early as the second trimester (and sometimes earlier) whether they are expecting a girl or a boy. According to research by The French National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED), published in December 2023, nine in ten parents (91 per cent) in France know the sex of their child before birth. They explain that this information can help them choose clothes and decorate their future offspring's bedroom. But while this curiosity may indeed be driven by practical considerations (material preparation, choice of name), it actually goes much further, and reflects strongly gendered cultural preferences. In the USA, this phenomenon is amplified by the rise of 'gender reveal parties,' highly fashionable events specially organised (as the name suggests) to reveal the gender of an unborn child. During these parties, which can be extravagant, all kinds of scenarios are staged, which sometimes involve parents discovering their baby's sex at the same time as their guests. This could be, for example, by bursting balloons filled with blue confetti (for a boy) or pink confetti (for a girl). But such revelations are not always insignificant. For some parents, the party can even turn sour if the announced result doesn't meet their expectations. For in many cultures, and for centuries, raising a girl or a boy has not been perceived or valued in the same way. And, the scales have traditionally tipped in favour of boys. According to the INED survey cited above, around 46 per cent of women and 41 per cent of men in France admit to having had a gender preference during pregnancy: 25 per cent of mothers hoped to have a girl and 20 per cent a boy. The trend is reversed for fathers: 23 per cent would have preferred a son and 18 per cent a daughter. According to a YouGov poll released in 2023, 56 per cent of Americans said they had no preference between a boy or a girl, while 19 per cent preferred a boy and 15 per cent a girl. A series of Gallup polls conducted in the US shows that between 1941 and 2018, an average of 40 per cent of Americans would prefer a boy and 28 per cent a girl. These gaps have narrowed over time. Today, the preference for male or female is most evident among parents who have multiple children and wish to have 'one of each.' Sex-selective terminations But it's a different story in some cultures, particularly in several Asian and Eastern European countries, where sex-selective abortion (voluntary termination of pregnancy due to disappointment with the sex of the unborn child) is practiced, despite bans. In these countries, the ratio of girls to boys born is very uneven. This is the case in India, where the birth ratio is estimated at 107 girls for every 100 boys in 2023, as well as in China (111 boys for every 100 girls in 2023), reports The Economist. This clear historical cultural preference for boys is also evident in other countries such as Vietnam, South Korea, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. In addition to sex-selective abortions, there are also parents who try to conceive another child in the hope of obtaining the desired sex. Some countries, such as Cyprus and the United States, even allow sex selection before conception through IVF, via a process known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis. There are many reasons why having a baby boy might be more highly valued, based on ancestral patriarchal traditions and beliefs that are deeply rooted in societies. For example, it is traditionally believed (including in Western cultures) that it is men who carry on the family name, who are eligible to receive the family inheritance, and who ensure the financial security of the household. And in some countries where religious practices play a prominent role, certain rites and rituals are the sole preserve of men. Globally, the annual number of excess male births has fallen from a peak of 1.7 million in 2000 to around 200,000, bringing it back to the biological norm of a birth ratio of 105 boys to 100 girls, according to The Economist. — Aditya Romansa/Unsplash pic Shifting perceptions However, this trend is now reversing for the first time. As early as 2019, an article in the New York Times noted this change. This is the case in Albania, South Korea, China, and India, where the gap between female and male births has narrowed considerably. Globally, the annual number of excess male births has fallen from a peak of 1.7 million in 2000 to around 200,000, bringing it back to the biological norm of a birth ratio of 105 boys to 100 girls, according to The Economist. But gender stereotypes still persist: girls, for example, are still perceived as being 'easier' to raise or better placed to care for elderly parents, which may partly explain this sudden 'appeal' of the female sex. But this paradigm shift can also be explained by a growing awareness of gender issues. Some countries have implemented policy measures and are raising public awareness of this issue in order to reduce the gender imbalance at birth. For example, China has banned sex-selective abortions, and in 2015 the Indian government launched a major awareness campaign called 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter). For their part, researchers and essayists contribute to advancing the debate by analysing sociological trends through the lens of gender. In many areas of society, acts of violence are predominantly committed by men. Indeed, the picture is not always a flattering one when it comes to the male gender. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, men make up between 93 per cent and 94 per cent of the global prison population. Men are also less qualified than women. In rich countries, 54 per cent of young women have a higher education degree, compared to 41 per cent of young men, according to an OECD report published in 2023. Based on these statistics, raising girls may appear more reassuring than raising boys. On the whole, this shift can be perceived as a positive societal development, as it is based (at least in part) on beliefs directly conveyed by the fight for gender equality, in the wake of international campaigns such as the #MeToo movement. — ETX Studio
