Liverpool set to sign goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on free transfer from Preston
Liverpool are set to sign goalkeeper Freddie Woodman when his contract at Preston North End expires at the end of June. The 28-year-old will provide experienced back-up for Anfield No 1 Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will officially join the club from Spanish outfit Valencia on July 1 after a £29 million deal was struck last August. Advertisement The Premier League champions moved to further strengthen their goalkeeping department after recently sanctioning season-long loan moves for Vitezslav Jaros, who went to Ajax, and Harvey Davies, who linked up with League Two side Crawley Town. They also sold Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford for a fee rising to £18m. As well as Alisson and Mamardashvili, London-born Woodman will train alongside youngster Armin Pecsi, who Liverpool signed from Hungarian club Puskas Akademia for £1.5m earlier this month. One of the benefits of signing Woodman on a free transfer is that he won't take up one of the 17 permitted non home-grown places when Liverpool submit their 25-man squad for the Champions League next season. Woodman started his professional career at Newcastle United before going out on loan to Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Swansea City and Bournemouth. The former England Under-21s international joined Preston on a permanent basis in 2022 and made 138 appearances for the Championship club. He played 44 times in all competitions for Preston last season.
