Chehalis teen officially announces candidacy for governor

Jul. 18—In American politics, being older and more experienced is often an advantage, with older politicians often edging out the younger competition. One young man from Chehalis sees things differently. Ethan Brunton, 15, officially announced his candidacy to be the next governor of Washington on Wednesday, July 16. For the event, Brunton gave a short speech in the conference room of the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library where he pitched himself as young, bold and "grounded in truth." During the speech, he first addressed his age. While the young political hopeful is not yet eligible to take up residence in the Governor's Mansion, he will turn 18 just in time for the 2028 election. He said he sees his youth as an asset, noting his energy and disconnection from mainstream political establishments. "I'm done waiting for change, so I'm stepping up," Brunton said. "Age doesn't define leadership; conviction does." Brunton outlined his political platform, focusing his talking points on public safety, education and financial accountability and promising to fully fund the police, roll back government regulation and fight and advocate for the everyday worker and family. Brunton delivered his speech with vigor and passion and made sure to give the event an air of patriotism, flying an American flag and asking attendees — which included just two Chronicle journalists — to stand for the national anthem to start off the event. Brunton faces a few major obstacles as a gubernatorial candidate, with possibly the most significant being his age. While what he says about energy and new ideas stemming from his youth may be true, his young age also means he cannot yet accept campaign donations or participate in local elections as an active voter. Brunton has also yet to develop a local following. Brunton's campaign announcement comes early enough in the political cycle to give him plenty of time to keep working at it. The political hopeful has three years still to hone his skills, build his following and decide exactly what he plans to offer Washington state as a candidate for governor.

New York Agrees to Settle Ex-Cuomo Aide's Harassment Claims for $450,000

New York State has agreed to pay $450,000 to settle claims from a woman who accused Andrew M. Cuomo of groping her in 2020, when he was the governor and she was an executive aide, according to a settlement document reviewed by The New York Times. The settlement, with Brittany Commisso, is the second one the state has made this year in connection with Mr. Cuomo's treatment of women while in office. Mr. Cuomo resigned in 2021 amid accusations he harassed 11 women, including Ms. Commisso. He is now running for mayor of New York City. Under the terms of the agreement, which will need a judge's approval, Ms. Commisso would drop all claims against the state, including an accusation that she was retaliated against after coming forward about her experience. She also agreed not to seek employment with the executive chamber through 2030. The deal does not include any admission of wrongdoing on the part of the state or Mr. Cuomo. Mariann Wang, a lawyer for Ms. Commisso, called the settlement 'a complete vindication of her claims.' It is a blow to the former governor, who has been trying to reinvent himself as a friendly and trustworthy figure as he struggles to mount a political comeback. A representative for Mr. Cuomo, Rich Azzopardi, said that the state had agreed to settle the suit over Mr. Cuomo's objections. This week, Mr. Cuomo announced that he would continue his bid for mayor as an independent after losing the Democratic nomination to Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist from Queens. Portugal's government postpones decision on central bank chief's future

LISBON, July 18 (Reuters) - The Portuguese government has postponed until next week an expected decision on the potential replacement of Mario Centeno as Bank of Portugal governor, whose five-year term ends on Saturday, the finance minister said on Friday. Centeno has been the target of frequent criticism from the political right, now in power, for moving from his role as finance minister in a previous Socialist administration to the central bank in 2020, a move detractors said undermined the institution's independence. Finance Minister Joaquim Sarmento has previously said the cabinet would consider whether to reappoint Centeno, an outspoken monetary policy dove at the European Central Bank, or replace him towards the end of his term. Friday's cabinet meeting ended without a decision, however. The minister gave no further comment on the likelihood of Centeno being replaced. Central bank governors are proposed by the finance minister and nominated by the cabinet for a five-year term and can be reappointed once. The nominee must submit to questioning by a parliamentary committee, which however has no power to block the nomination, before the government can officially appoint him or her. Portugal's parliament began its summer recess until September on Thursday, although committees can still hold hearings through next Friday.

Republican Scott Jensen announces second run for Minnesota governor

Jul. 17—By Ryan Faircloth, Star Tribune (TNS) Former GOP gubernatorial nominee Scott Jensen announced Thursday he is running for governor again. In his campaign announcement, the Chaska physician and former state senator said he wants to bring Minnesota back to "the days when our communities were safe, our schools were strong, and our leaders put people — not politics — first." "Two decades of liberal policies have made Minnesota too expensive, too dangerous and thrown our culture out of whack. Tim Walz made it worse," Jensen said in a video announcing his campaign. Jensen rose to prominence in the state Republican Party during the COVID-19 pandemic as an outspoken skeptic of death counts, vaccines and mask mandates. He ran against Walz in 2022 and lost by nearly 8 percentage points, drawing fewer votes than the GOP's candidates for attorney general, secretary of state and state auditor. Walz hasn't formally announced if he'll run for re-election next year. But in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune last week, he was bullish about his chances. "If we run again, we will win," Walz said. "I have the capacity to ramp up a campaign that would be bigger than anything that they would see." Jensen joins Republican Kendall Qualls as the only prominent Republicans to enter the 2026 race for governor so far. Qualls, an Army veteran and former health care executive, also campaigned for governor in 2022 but narrowly lost the GOP endorsement to Jensen. Other Republicans are rumored to be eyeing the race, including state Rep. Kristin Robbins and attorney Chris Madel.
