Grenade attack kills one, injures three in southwest Pakistan

QUETTA: A man was killed and three others injured in an attack on Wednesday night in southwestern Balochistan province after unknown individuals threw a hand grenade at a group of civilians sitting outside their house, a senior police official said. The attack was reported at 10 PM in the mountainous town of Aab-e-Gum, located in Kachi district, after unidentified men lobbed a hand grenade at four people, Rana Muhammad Dilawar, Superintendent of Police in the area, told Arab News over the phone. 'One man identified as Ahmed was killed in the grenade attack and three others were injured,' he said, adding: 'The injured were shifted to Mach District Headquarter Hospital before two of them were referred to Quetta.' No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, though Pakistan's restive province has been the site of a separatist insurgency for several decades, with militants belonging to groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) often targeting members of the Pakistani armed forces, state-backed tribal leaders and non-local workers in such attacks. 'Police have been investigating the motives behind targeting civilians with a grenade attack,' Dilawar said. 'Hunt for the attackers is also underway in the area who fled by taking advantage of the dark.' Aab-e-Gum is a small town located some 73 kilometers southeast of Quetta, surrounded by rugged mountains, and has remained a stronghold of ethnic Baloch separatist groups, particularly the BLA. The group has previously targeted Punjab-bound passenger trains in the area that cross the Bolan Pass.

Inert grenade found after alleged bike thief stopped on University of Waterloo campus

Police have recovered an inert grenade after a man allegedly riding a stolen bicycle was stopped on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus on Tuesday morning. Police were called to the school around 6 a.m. after members of UW's Special Constable Service saw a man riding a bike on campus that had been reported stolen. The inert grenade was found when the constables were arresting the man, police said. According to Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS), an inert grenade is empty and doesn't contain explosive material. It can mimic a live grenade by producing a popping sound and it is used during training and demonstration purposes. When WRPS arrived on scene, the university sent a notice via texts and on their website to staff and students informing them that police were on campus for an active investigation. "The campus remains open," the notice had read in part. "If you're on campus, follow instructions from the authorities." Once police completed their investigation, they determined there were no public safety concerns. Staff and students were updated through UW's notification system letting them know that "the campus remains open for normal activities following the investigation." Police have charged a 36-year-old man from Cambridge with: Possession of stolen goods under $5,000 (two counts). Possession of identity documents. Possession of break and enter tools. Anyone with information is being asked to call police.

Halifax police detonate live grenade found outside home in Dartmouth

Halifax Regional Police detonated a live grenade that was found early Tuesday morning outside a Dartmouth home. According to a news release, police were contacted around 6:30 a.m. AT by a resident of Pauline Crescent who reported a grenade had been thrown onto their property. The force's explosive disposal unit, with the assistance of personnel from the navy's fleet diving unit, deployed a robot that X-rayed the item and confirmed it was a live grenade, the release said. A police spokesperson said the robot was used to move the grenade away from the home. It was subsequently buried underground and a countercharge was used to successfully detonate it "without causing injury or property damage." After the grenade was discovered, police evacuated homes on Pauline Crescent and closed off the street. Homes were also evacuated near Belle Vista Drive throughout the day. The grenade was detonated at about 3:40 p.m. and the street was reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly afterward. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
