Teenager pleads guilty to plotting gun attack and travelling to Somalia

A teenager from Lancashire has pleaded guilty to planning a gun attack and travelling to Somalia. Muhammad Billal, 18, from Nelson, was arrested on February 11 and charged with two counts of preparation of terrorist acts and four charges of collecting information likely to assist acts of terrorism. The Old Bailey heard that between last February and last October he researched 'accessible shooting ranges' and the purchase of 'chest rigs' designed to hold ammunition. He also conducted online reconnaissance of potential attack locations, and sought to illicitly purchase a firearm. He then went on to take steps to travel to Somalia between last 7 October and 20 November, which included buying airline flights. During this period, he also sought advice and guidance on how to leave the UK without arousing suspicion, changed his appearance, deleted extreme Islamic material from his mobile phone and bought clothes and equipment. He also obtained a visa to enter Ethiopia in order to facilitate crossing into Somalia. The charges on dates between last April and August relate Billal accessing issues of Rumiyah, an online magazine used by Islamic State for propaganda and recruitment. During a previous hearing, Billal failed to attend his preliminary hearing with the court told he had 'voluntarily absented himself'. Billal will be sentenced at a later date.

Gunmen kill at least 20 people in an attack in central Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — At least 20 people have been killed in a gun attack on a village in central Nigeria, local authorities said Wednesday. The attack took place in the early hours of Tuesday in Tahoss, in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, state assembly member Dewan Gabriel said in a statement. Graphic videos and photographs on social media platforms showed what appeared to be corpses and burnt down houses in the aftermath of the attack. Sati Shuwa, a local elected official in charge of the area, said the assailants, armed with guns and machetes, were undeterred by the presence of security personnel as they burned down houses during the raid. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killings, but such attacks are common in Nigeria's northern region where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water. The prolonged conflict has become deadlier in recent years, with authorities and analysts warning that more herdsmen are taking up arms. Last month, gunmen killed at least 150 people in the neighboring Benue state. 'The rising attacks in Riyom Local Government Area have become alarming, creating a state of fear and insecurity that must be addressed urgently,' Gabriel said. He acknowledged the efforts of the government and security agencies, but called for a change in tactics to tackle the situation effectively.

Gunmen kill 11 at religious festival in Mexico's Guanajuato state

A gun attack during a religious celebration in central Mexico has left 11 people dead and at least 20 others injured in violence-plagued Guanajuato state, local officials have confirmed. The shooting erupted Tuesday night in the city of Irapuato, authorities said on Wednesday, during festivities marking the Nativity of John the Baptist. Witnesses described terrible scenes of panic and chaos as partygoers fled the gunfire. 'It was chaos. People put the wounded into their cars and rushed to hospital to try to save them,' one witness told the news agency AFP, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns. Footage shared online shows the moment gunfire rang out as people danced and celebrated. Screams can be heard as the crowd scattered in panic. Bloodstains and bullet holes were still visible at the scene on Wednesday morning. Among the dead were a 17-year-old, eight men, and two women, according to the Guanajuato state prosecutor's office. In a statement, Irapuato's local government called the attack a 'cowardly act' and said security forces are hunting those responsible. Psychological support is being offered to affected families. President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the attack as 'deplorable' and said an investigation had been launched. At her daily news conference, Sheinbaum referred to the shooting as a 'confrontation', without elaborating on details. Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise also denounced the attack, offering condolences to the victims' families and pledging justice. While Guanajuato is known for its industrial growth and colonial-era tourism hubs, it has notoriously become renowned as Mexico's most violent state in recent years. Authorities blame much of the bloodshed on an ongoing turf war between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the powerful Jalisco New Generation cartel. Government figures show Guanajuato recorded more than 3,000 homicides last year — the highest in the country. Since Mexico launched its so-called war on drugs in 2006, more than 480,000 people have been killed in criminal violence, with more than 120,000 listed as missing.
