Texas floods latest: Death toll rises to 129 as battered communities face weekend of flash flood risks
FEMA found to have exempted buildings at old and new sites from country's flood map hazard area In response to an appeal, FEMA in 2013 amended the county's flood map to remove 15 of the camp's buildings from the hazard area, a review by The Associated Press found. Records show that those buildings were part of the 99-year-old Camp Mystic Guadalupe, which was devastated by last week's flood. After further appeals, FEMA removed 15 more Camp Mystic structures in 2019 and 2020 from the designation. Those buildings were located on nearby Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, a sister site that opened to campers in 2020 as part of a major expansion and suffered less damage in the flood. Campers have said the cabins at Cypress Lake withstood significant damage, but those nicknamed "the flats" at the Guadalupe River camp were inundated. Experts say Camp Mystic's requests to amend the FEMA map could have been an attempt to avoid the requirement to carry flood insurance, to lower the camp's insurance premiums or to pave the way for renovating or adding new structures under less costly regulations.

City of Tyler set to vote on airport hazard area zoning regulations
TYLER, Texas (KETK)– Tyler City council will call a vote to amend an ordinance, establishing a hazard area by the six runways at Tyler Pounds. Lufkin police investigate targeted shooting in residential area The Planning and Zoning Committee voted 6-1 Tuesday to recommend an addition of restricted areas around the airport. 'If you were to build something at a particular height that might obstruct an aircraft from safely approaching either one, any of those six runways, that is the issue that we're trying to avoid,' airport director, Stephen Thompson said. The predicted areas to be impacted the most are outlined in black, but the final decision will be made by the FAA. City of Tyler Planning and Zoning Board Meeting Business owners within the heavily restricted area are confused about what they can have on their property. 'My concern is what would we be the restrictions are from? Would we be able to have RV parking, RV storage in that zone that is already constructed? My RV storage is definitely in that zone?' one RV business owner said. Tyler High students honored for leadership, excellence in JROTC program One homeowner who lives in the restricted area questioned if there was a threat to their livelihood and the planning director said no. 'If this is expected to pass this does not require you to move or restructure your home,' Planning and Zoning Director, Kyle Kingma said. Thompson said this will set the standard when new development enters into that part of Tyler. 'This document basically just steers developers towards that and raises awareness and makes sure that people understand that development in the vicinity of an airport has that obligation to do an airspace study and the FAA provides the feedback. They'll determine what is and what is not a hazard,' Thompson said. If the ordinance were to pass, the FAA would restrict various building heights, frequencies, lighting concerns, and business that could attract birds to the area. The vote will be taken by city council, May 28. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
