BBC make major change to Wimbledon coverage that risks upsetting tennis fans

THE BBC'S Wimbledon highlights show is set to be moved to a "graveyard slot" next week. Fans have become used to watching "Today at Wimbledon" during the Championships since the programme's launch in 1990. 3 3 The highlights show has typically commenced between 8pm and 9pm over the years, with Qasa Alom replacing Clare Balding as host in 2023. Last year's programming schedule was disrupted by a series of late finishes on Centre Court due to bad weather. With play on the main courts often continuing beyond 8pm, the BBC's coverage typically decided to stick with the live action. Per the Telegraph, Beeb chiefs have decided to move their TV slot for Today at Wimbledon to 11:55pm for day one at the Championships. The show will be recorded earlier and made available online from 9pm during the first week of the tournament, but won't be broadcast on TV until what the Telegraph describe as the "graveyard slot". BBC chiefs say that their highlights programme will begin "after live play ends". And it will be shown on BBC Two. During the second week of the tournament, Today at Wimbledon will return to a more familiar slot. A BBC spokesperson told SunSport: "Live Wimbledon coverage is scheduled to air on BBC One or BBC Two until 10pm in the first week, and until 9pm from the second week, when matches typically finish earlier. "We wouldn't show highlights on another channel during live play, so Today at Wimbledon will be available on BBC iPlayer and scheduled on BBC Two later in the evening, depending on when play ends. "It's currently set for 8pm from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th July, when earlier finishes are expected." Isa Guha will present main coverage from SW19 each morning, with Balding taking over as the action moves to BBC One during the afternoon. Alom will continue to present Today at Wimbledon. The BBC have confirmed their commentary team for the Championships. Usual suspects including John McEnroe, Tim Henman and Martina Navratilova will all be involved. But there is no place for Nick Kyrgios, who featured on the Beeb's coverage last year, or Andy Murray - who has not yet been tempted into punditry since hanging up his racquet. 3

BBC move iconic programme to permanent graveyard slot and opt to air repeats instead

The BBC 's flagship Wimbledon highlights show Today at Wimbledon has been relegated to a graveyard television slot. The 61-year-old show is being moved from a prime 8pm or 9pm BBC2 airing time to 11.55pm by the broadcaster. Critics have accused the BBC of essentially making it 'Yesterday at Wimbledon'. The 60-minute programme will first be shown just five minutes before midnight on Monday when the tournament starts. It has been shoved into an antisocial slot with the BBC instead opting to air repeats of Your Garden Made Perfect, The Pembrokeshire Coast: A Wild Year, and Upstart Crow between 8pm-10.30pm next Monday. The move is not a one-off and it will be permanently aired at the unsociable hour, according to The Telegraph. Today at Wimbledon is the only way which many tennis fans can tune in to watch highlights, with some viewers, particularly in rural areas, unable to access BBC's website or iPlayer. A BBC spokesperson defended the change, claiming it would still be broadcast at its traditional time on iPlayer and its later showing on television would be as a 'repeat'. 'Live Wimbledon coverage is scheduled to air on BBC One or BBC Two until 10pm in the first week, and until 9pm from the second week, when matches typically finish earlier,' they added. The BBC's controversial move comes after its recent blunder which saw it fail to televise Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter's doubles match at Queen's. The pair took to the court for the first match of their budding doubles partnership as women's tennis returned to The Queen's Club for the first time in 52 years earlier this month. But British audiences were unable to watch the match against Wu Fang-hsien and Jiang Xinyu, with the BBC forced to offer an apology after angry viewers failed to find the match either on terrestrial or iPlayer. 'Unfortunately we won't be able to show you this match because we are focused on Andy Murray Arena, but we will be bringing you updates throughout the course of the afternoon,' BBC commentary announced shortly before the start of the match on Court One. Mail Sport understands that the decision taken to show Raducanu and Boulter on the 1,000-seat occupancy Court One rather than the 7,700-strong Andy Murray Arena - where matches are televised - was made in line with the Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) contractual obligation with the WTA.

Gary Lineker strikes deal with DAZN after BBC exit

Gary Lineker has struck a deal that will see him present football highlights days after losing his job at the BBC for sharing an 'anti-Semitic' rat emoji. Lineker's lucrative podcast, The Rest is Football, has announced it will show match footage from this summer's inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in a tie-up with global broadcast rights holders DAZN. The deal was confirmed barely a week after Lineker left the BBC a year early following what was his final Match of the Day. The 64-year-old, who 'apologised reservedly' last month for sharing a post on Instagram he said he had not known had contained 'offensive references', had previously been due to continue presenting the corporation's live coverage of the FA Cup and next summer's World Cup. Tony Pastor, the co-founder of Lineker's Goalhanger podcast empire, said: 'The Rest Is Football isn't just being listened to – it's being watched, shared, and talked about across Spotify, YouTube, TikTok, X, and Instagram. Partnering with DAZN to bring official match clips into the mix is the natural next step – adding energy, context, and taking the conversation to the next level. With over six million episode views and listens each month, and huge engagement across social, it's already the UK's most popular sports podcast. As the way fans experience football evolves, The Rest Is Football is right at the heart of it.' Pete Oliver, CEO of Growth Markets at DAZN, added: 'The Rest Is Football is essential viewing and listening for fans who want insight, entertainment, and personality – and this partnership is a brilliant way to bring the Fifa Club World Cup even closer to that audience. It's about connecting global football with the voices fans trust and love, and showing the tournament in a fresh, exciting, and authentically British way. As the global broadcast partner of the Fifa Club World Cup and the only place where fans in the UK can watch every game for free, there was no better partner than Goalhanger.' As revealed by Telegraph Sport in December, DAZN bought the global rights to the new 32-team Club World Cup for $1 billion (£787 million), rescuing the tournament from a potential television blackout. It subsequently announced an equivalent investment in the company by Saudi Arabia's Surj Sports. DAZN will stream all 63 Club World Cup matches and has also sublicensed 23 of them – 15 group games, four last-16 ties, two quarter-finals, one semi-final and the final – to Channel 5 in the UK.

Lions match highlights on free-to-air TV this summer

The British and Irish Lions' tour to Australia will be available to watch free-to-air on TV this summer – but for now, only in Welsh. The Guardian has learned that the Lions have agreed a deal for a highlights package with Welsh language channel S4C, which will be available via S4C's iPlayer service and YouTube channel. S4C is understood to have bought highlights rights for all three Test matches and the Lions' six tour games, which will be broadcast in Welsh. S4C will also broadcast full live coverage of the Lions' send-off Test against Argentina in Dublin on June 20th, available in English and Welsh. The bespoke Welsh TV offering may raise eyebrows as there are just two Welshmen in Andy Farrell's 38-man squad – flanker Jac Morgan and scrumhalf Tomos Williams – but illustrates S4C's commitment to rugby at a level that is not matched by other terrestrial broadcasters. READ MORE The Welsh contingent is their lowest ever, meaning they join Ireland in 1993, and Scotland in 2009 and 2017, as the least represented countries on a Lions tour. Sky Sports has the exclusive live rights for its eighth successive Lions tour and will also offer its own highlights show. The Lions remain hopeful of securing a free-to-air highlights deal in England, but have yet to do so three weeks before their first official tour game in Dublin. Channel 4 bought UK highlights rights for the Lions' last tour, to South Africa four years ago, but has not made an offer on this occasion, while ITV, BBC Sport and Channel 5 have also yet to bid. The BBC has also failed to secure live radio rights this year, with the Lions partnering with TalkSport for the fourth successive tour. The BBC's priority this summer is the women's European Championship, as well as saving resources for next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which will be an expensive undertaking. ITV also has live rights for the European Championship, Channel 4 is covering the men's Under-21 European Championship and Channel 5 has agreed to sublicence 23 Club World Cup matches from DAZN, so the terrestrial channels are committed elsewhere. The BBC has reduced its rugby coverage in recent years, with ITV securing the rights to all of England's Six Nations matches until 2030 in a joint deal signed earlier this year. As part of the new contract ITV will show 10 matches from each year's Six Nations to the BBC's five, which will feature Wales and Scotland's home fixtures, provided England are not involved. The Lions and S4C declined to comment. – Guardian
