Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani sets HR record with big blast vs. Rockies

The post Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani sets HR record with big blast vs. Rockies appeared first on ClutchPoints. Many baseball fans come to Los Angeles Dodgers game expecting two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to do great things either with his bat or with the ball in his hands. He surely isn't disappointing them during the series opener at Coors Field in Colorado Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies. Advertisement In the sixth inning, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player worked his magic against Rockies relief pitcher Ryan Rolison. After taking a ball on Rolison's first offering, an 85 mph slider, Shohei Ohtani went for it on the next pitch, which was a 92 mph fastball. Ohtani took that pitch deep for a two-run home run that plated Tommy Edman as well and stretched the Dodgers' lead to three runs. Perhaps more notable about that home run is that it set a new MLB record for most home runs out of the leadoff spot within a team's first 80 games of a season, according to Sarah Langs of Ohtani breaks his tie with former Baltimore Orioles star Brady Anderson for the record. Anderson had 26 such home runs in the 1996 MLB season. That dinger gave Ohtani 27 home runs in the 2025 MLB regular season and through the Dodgers' 79 games. That means Ohtani can add more to that home run total within the 80-game frame, with Los Angeles playing its 80th game of the season this coming Wednesday versus Colorado again. Advertisement For what it's worth, the Rockies are expected to have Chase Dollander on the mound in the second game of this series, and while he's not faced Ohtani before, he's got a profile that makes the Japanese superstar an even bigger threat to hit a dinger off of him. Among pitchers who have logged in at least 50 innings on the mound in 2025, Dollander is second-worst with 2.22 home runs allowed per nine innings, per FanGraphs. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani led off the game with his 29th home run and also hit an RBI triple, and Freddie Freeman stretched as he fell over to complete a game-ending double play as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Friday night for their fifth straight win. Ohtani hit his major league-leading eighth leadoff homer this season, a drive off off Noah Cameron (2-4), and Max Muncy hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer for a 3-1 lead in the second. Advertisement Bobby Witt Jr.'s two-run homer against Dustin May put Kansas City ahead 4-3 in the bottom half and gave the Royals their first lead since Sunday. Ohtani tied the score in the fifth against Cameron (2-4) with his seventh triple of the season and scored on Mookie Betts' single off Steven Cruz. Kansas City loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Tanner Scott on singles by Mikael Garcia and Salvador Perez around Vinnie Pacquantino's walk. Rookie Jac Caglianone grounded to second Tommy Edman, who made a backhand flip to Betts at second, and Betts bounced his throw to Freeman. The All-Star first baseman snagged the ball as he fell to the field, giving Scott his 18th save in 23 chances. Advertisement Kansas City has lost six straight overall and 11 home games in a row. Lou Trivino (3-0) got five outs as five Dodgers relievers combined for shutout relief of Dustin May, who gave up four runs, six hits and three walks in four innings. Cameron (2-4) allowed five runs, three hits and three walks in four-plus innings Perez had a run-scoring single in the first. Kyle Isbel lined an RBI double just over the outstretched glove of right fielder Teoscar Hernandez in the three-run second for the Royals, who had scored on run during a three-game series against Tampa Bay. Key Moment Freeman, who won a Gold Glove in 2018, made the outstanding defensive play that ended the game. Advertisement Key Stat Kansas City tied its record for consecutive home losses, set from Sept. 21, 2011, to April 23, 2012, and matched from May 6 to June 4, 2013. Up Next Ohtani (0-0, 4.50 ERA) makes his third mound appearance since elbow surgery, facing RHP Seth Lugo (4-5, 2.93 ERA) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. appeared in his 500th game and joined some select company. Chisholm homered into the second deck in right field Friday night to give the Yankees the lead in their 3-0 victory over the Athletics and giving him 89 career homers to go with 109 steals. Advertisement Chisholm's homer off Mitch Spence in the second inning gave him the third-most homers and steals within the first 500 career games, trailing Eric Davis (107 homers, 190 steals) and former Yankee Alfonso Soriano (97 homers, 121 steals). Davis played his 500th game on Sept. 15, 1988, for the Cincinnati Reds. He finished his career in 2001 as a member of the San Francisco Giants with career totals of 282 homers, 349 steals in 1,626 games. 'That's pretty cool,' Chisholm said. 'I didn't know that. I just be out there playing and having fun but the first time I met Eric Davis, he's one of the favorite players I watched when I was a kid,' Chisholm said. 'So like watching his highlights and watching the way he plays, I feel like Byron Buxton is the closest person to him and watching Byron is just like watching E.D. (Eric Davis)." Soriano played his 500th game on Sept. 27, 2003, during his penultimate regular-season contest with the Yankees before being traded to Texas in the offseason for Alex Rodriguez. Soriano finished his career in 2014 with the Yankees with totals of 412 homers and 289 steals in 1,975 games. Advertisement 'I got to meet Alfonso in Miami,' Chisholm said. 'I played with his little cousin. So for me talking about Alfonso and Eric and watching them as kids, those were the guys that I was kind of compared to in my swings even though (I'm) like small, (have) some power and some speed but yeah it's kind of sick to have same accomplishments.' After hitting Spence's cutter, Chisholm shrugged his shoulders as he rounded third and did a little shuffle before crossing the plate. Chisholm debuted Sept. 1, 2020, for the Miami Marlins and has 23 homers and 28 steals in 97 games for the Yankees, who acquired him last July 27 and moved him to third base. Chisholm's homer marked the 12th time in his career he went deep in consecutive games. It also gave him five homers since returning from a right oblique strain June 3, including one that stopped the Yankees' 30-inning scoreless streak on June 18. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Jose Juarez) DETROIT (AP) — Byron Buxton homered and scored twice to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Friday night for their third straight victory. David Festa (2-2) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Jhoan Durán pitched the ninth for his 12th save. Advertisement Brooks Lee drove in a pair of runs for the Twins. Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Matt Wallner and Lee, then made it 2-0 an inning later on Buxton's long homer to left. The Twins made it 3-0 in the sixth. Reliever Brant Hurter replaced Gipson-Long with one out and a runner on first. After a wild pitch, Hurter walked Ty France before Lee hit an RBI single. Hurter then hit former Tiger Kody Clemens to load the bases, but Carlos Hernández replaced Hurter and got out of the inning when Harrison Bader struck out and Christian Vazquez grounded out. Advertisement Buxton led off the seventh with a walk, stole second, took third on Trevor Larnach's groundout and scored on Willi Castro's squeeze bunt. The Tigers had two runners on in the seventh, but Dillon Dingler grounded into a force at third and Parker Meadows popped out, but they finally scored when Colt Keith tripled in the eighth and scored on Gleyber Torres' single. Zach McKinstry singled to put runners on the corners, but Griffin Jax struck out Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson to end the inning. Key moment The Tigers had a chance to rally after Torres got their second hit with two out in the sixth. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli replaced Festa with Danny Coulombe and Tigers manager A.J. Hinch countered with pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones. Baldelli won the duel, as Jones grounded to Lee at third for a force at second. Advertisement Lee had prevented a bigger rally earlier in the inning, going behind the bag to field a Javier Báez grounder and make the play at first. Key stat The Tigers came into the game with a 21-5 record in series-opening games this season, including 12-1 at home. Up next Detroit RHP Casey Mize (7-2, 2.88) was set to face RHP Bailey Ober (4-5, 4.90) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:
