Plainclothes officer investigating homicide fatally shot man in Regina: police watchdog
The Regina police officer who shot and killed a 29-year-old man in Regina's North Central neighbourhood on Friday was in plain clothes, according to an interim report by the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). SIRT is an independent civilian-led unit responsible for investigating incidents where people are hurt or killed during interactions with police in Saskatchewan. The agency released new details of the fatal shooting on Tuesday. The Regina Police Service (RPS) had previously released no details about the victim. According to SIRT, the man who police killed was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation. Plainclothes officers were working on that investigation in the area on the morning of the fatal shooting. SIRT's report said two officers spotted the man on a bike, before confronting him in an alley between Athol and Garnet streets, near Buffalo Meadows Park, at 10:12 a.m. CST. Both officers exited unmarked police vehicles and had a verbal confrontation with the man, issuing "verbal commands," the report said. "One plainclothes member of RPS discharged at single round from a service pistol," SIRT said. The bullet hit the man, the report said. The officers called EMS, which arrived at 10:17 a.m. and pronounced the 29-year-old dead at 10:19 a.m. RPS reported the incident to SIRT at approximately 10:30 a.m. Once SIRT investigators arrived on the scene, a "replica firearm" was recovered and "has been seized as an exhibit" in the on-going investigation. SIRT will release a full report within 90 days of the investigation ending. The agency is asking anyone who may have witnessed the fatal shooting or have video of it to contact them. The original homicide investigation will remain with RPS.

‘Literal hell': Mum calls for inquest after baby's mystery death
A mother says she has been living in 'hell' since the unexplained death of her baby daughter in 2019, and will no longer be silent while waiting for answers. Six years later, Kayla Hehir has still not even received a death certificate for eight-month-old Talon. There has been no coronial inquest held or any outcome to an ongoing homicide investigation. After staying patient so long, Ms Hehir has decided to finally speak out to say she feels that 'no one cares' how the little girl came to be found unresponsive in their Melbourne home. 'I felt like I had to be quiet so justice can take its course,' she told 'But justice isn't taking its course at all. 'It's (the case) sitting there and it's just ridiculous.' Do you know more? Email: Ms Hehir said she had breastfed Talon overnight on June 20, 2019. When she woke in the morning at their Frankston home, Ms Hehir knew something was wrong. She came into the loungeroom and saw Talon on the lounge: 'She just didn't look right. 'I don't even know how to explain it. She just did not look right. 'And I picked her up and she wasn't right. It was like kind of limp, but stiff. 'And I started panicking. I started screaming.' The girl was rushed to Monash Children's Hospital where doctors were unable to save Talon's life. Ms Hehir described the shock of how that day unfolded and the devastating news doctors relayed to her: 'It happened so quick and so slow at the same time. 'And even when we were taking her off life support, for some stupid reason, I still thought she was going to be okay.' Victoria Police have confirmed homicide detectives were still investigating the circumstances around Talon's death, which recently past its sixth anniversary. Ms Hehir said she was in contact with police but there had largely been 'silence' from the authorities, robbing her and Talon's siblings of closure or justice. 'People don't realise that, they will say, 'oh, it was six years ago'. But it's every day,' Ms Hehir said. 'I see those moments all the time, like they just happened. 'We can't just keep sitting here like this, it's been a literal hell.' She has now reached out to Sherele Moody, who runs the Australian Femicide Watch and the Red Heart Campaign, to petition authorities and state government ministers to push the case forward. They are calling for a coroner to be appointed and for a reward to be offered for information about the case. Ms Moody told she did not understand how Talon's death was allowed to have 'flown under the radar' for so many years. 'Obviously, for a mum losing her baby, that is really one of the worst things that can happen to a human being,' she said. Ms Moody's petition for an inquest and reward for information about Talon's death has gained more than 2500 signatures. In a statement, Victoria Police said detectives from the Homicide Squad were investigating the death of a baby girl in Frankston in 2019. 'Emergency services were called to a residential property on 20 June after the eight-month-old was found unconscious. 'She was conveyed to hospital where she subsequently passed away. 'The circumstances surrounding the death are still to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.' Ms Hehir said that since going public she had been dealing with the pain of seeing pictures of her little girl popping up on social media – but she hoped it would be worth it. 'I'm feeling hopefully that maybe people will listen.'

Investigation into death of Brett Gardner's son still open for 'possible homicide': report
Officials said in April that the death of Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son, Miller, was caused by carbon monoxide, but authorities are reportedly still investigating whether it was a homicide. The Gardner family announced Miller's death on March 23, two days after he had died. Officials ruled the cause of death on April 3 after they investigated both food poisoning and asphyxiation. However, according to ESPN, a spokesperson for the Costa Rican prosecutor's office handling the case said the case remains under investigation, and prosecutors are still determining if the death will be ruled a homicide. "The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide. For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed," the spokesperson said. Miller was tested for carboxyhemoglobin, a compound generated when carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood. The test showed a saturation level of 64%. It is considered lethal when carboxyhemoglobin saturation exceeds 50%. The Gardner family stayed at the Arenas Del Mar hotel in Manuel Antonio. Several members of the family fell ill during the trip, the Gardners announced. "We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st," the family's statement read. "Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day." Gardner was an outfielder for the New York Yankees for 14 seasons and was on the team when they won their last World Series title in 2009. He spent his entire career in the Bronx, last playing in 2021. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Traffic light pole fatality: Police ask witnesses to come forward
A ute is towed from the scene of a fatal pedestrian incident in Hamilton last week. Photo: RNZ / Libby Kirkby-McLeod Police want to speak to anyone who helped at the scene of a crash with a traffic light pole that killed a pedestrian in Hamilton on Thursday. Police believe a gold ute is the vehicle involved in the crash. They are appealing for a woman wearing pink who assisted at the scene moments after the incident unfolded about 10am. Waikato police launched a homicide investigation just hours after a woman's death at the corner of Ōhaupō Rd and Kahikatea Dr, a major city thoroughfare where State Highway 1 intersects with SH3. RNZ understands the 30-year-old victim had two children. Police have not named her yet, but tributes have been flowing online. One person wrote: "I know we didn't talk much after you left (Christchurch) but I will always remember our friendship and the fun we had and the trouble we got into. I thought about you often, you were one person that truly knew me. Fly high my friend." Another said he was with the woman in her final moments and tried to apply pressure to her injuries until the ambulance arrived. He said he laid flowers at an island within the intersection. The intersection, directly below Waikato Hospital, was closed while specialist investigators remained at the scene for several hours. Police said they were continuing to appeal to those who may have seen the incident to come forward. Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Neilson said the victim was standing next to a traffic light pole when the vehicle drove into it. "Police have received a steady flow of information from the public, but are keen to speak with those who may have witnessed the incident, or any prior interactions between the offending gold ute and the woman who died. "In particular we would like to speak to a female wearing pink who assisted at the scene." He asked that witnesses contact police at clicking "Update Report" or by calling 105, using the reference number 250515/6763. The incident was initially reported as a two-vehicle crash, but police have since confirmed another vehicle was not involved.
