Yellow Sam charges home to win at Caulfield and earn crack at Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes
Yellow Sam has earned a shot at the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) next month at Caulfield with a strong win on Saturday. The Lindsey Smith -trained mare finished powerfully under jockey Fred Kersley to overhaul Lim's Saltoro, well-backed favourite The Open and Rheinberg. 'We thought this craziness she'd go to the Bletchingly with no weight,' Smith said. 'We'll throw a few darts and then if she competed well she'd go to the (PB Lawrence).' Yellow Sam rounded the bend with work to do and duly saluted second-up. Yellow Sam won the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill the start prior, first-up from a long break after a health setback last year – a benign tumour in her hind gut. 'It's easier to train fast horses, I've got a few slower ones,' Smith said. 'Courageous horse, has been from the day dot … great will to win, as I've said many times, will maybe outdoes ability sometimes.' Kersley praised Yellow Sam. 'She has got better, she's probably the ultimate racehorse,' Kersley said. 'She's a professional, probably one of the gutsiest horses I've had the pleasure to do anything with. 'Time and time again she's come back, a filly, a mare, and she's held the form.' YELLOW SAM ON THE LINE 😲 It took every inch of the straight but Yellow Sam got there! What a way to finish the day at Caulfield! @FKersley â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 Earlier on the card, former international Sayedaty Sadaty, trained by Ciaron Maher, opened his Australian account with victory in the 2000m Quality Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday. Sayedaty Sadaty travelled outside leader Amberite and kicked clear in the straight to win third-up after consecutive 1800m placings at Sandown. Unfortunately, the race was marred by separate incidents in the straight. Rolls, trained by Maddie Raymond and Patrick Bell, failed to finish due to a severe leg fracture. Racing Victoria confirmed the gelding was humanely euthanized by on-course veterinarians. Jockey Harry Grace was taken to hospital with a sore hand and some general pain. Dakotah Keane was also dislodged from her mount, King Frankel, in the straight. Thankfully, Keane and King Frankel avoided injury. â– â– â– â– â– Zahra sets sail for big spring Flemington trainer Simon Zahra has spring ambitions exciting Xarpo after the 'beast' responded to challengers at Caulfield on Saturday. Xarpo, expertly handled by apprentice jockey Ryan Houston, found the front early in the straight as favourite Mercurial Lady mounted a case. Xarpo lifted again to hold a margin, while Illyivy bloused Mercurial Lady for second and third. 'They were entitled to beat her,' Zahra said. 'She was a bit underdone, first-up 1200m, most of them had a run under their belt, so it's exciting.' Xarpo sticks the neck out and wins! Ryan Houston on the board for Simon Zahra ðŸ'°ðŸ'° @szahraracing â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 Zahra said Xarpo would get to a mile in the spring. 'She's won over 1400m but I reckon she's a miler, last preparation she just missed the starts, did everything wrong, we got away with that win at Flemington,' Zahra said. 'To see her now compared to what she was six months ago just a different horse.' Xarpo, a rising four-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun, has won three of six starts to date. 'We gave her a nice prep last time, she wasn't quite furnished and by the end she was starting to switch on,' Zahra said. 'She returned to the stable an absolute beast (after her spell) … we were pretty confident she would come here today and run pretty well. 'There's a bit of spring fortune we want to target … a complete different horse (now), like a big strong mare and she's starting to do everything right.' Zahra deferred spring plans until after Xarpo's next run, potentially at Caulfield in a fortnight or Flemington in three weeks. 'If she can perform well there we'll freshen her up,' Zahra said.

Aidan O'Brien's Lambourn chases historic Classic double in Irish Derby
Lambourn led throughout when galloping his 17 rivals into submission in the Group One Epsom Derby (2,405m) earlier this month and he is the favourite to prove that was no fluke in Sunday's 10-runner Group One Irish Derby (2,400m) at the Curragh. If the son of 2014 Irish Derby winner Australia achieves that feat, he will be the 20th horse to land the historic Classic double as well as being an extraordinary 17th Irish Derby victor for his trainer Aidan O'Brien. Ryan Moore takes over on Lambourn with Wayne Lordan, the triumphant winning rider at Epsom, partnering Puppet Master, who looks the strongest of O'Brien's four other contenders. What happens in the great Epsom Classic has traditionally proved the strongest guide to what occurs at the Curragh a few weeks later so it is no surprise to see Lambourn – drawn in gate five – taken on again by Epsom second and third, Lazy Griff and Tennessee Stud. While Tennessee Stud has four and three-quarter lengths to find on Lambourn, he did best of those coming from off the speed at Epsom. Lambourn destroys them in the @betfred Derby! Wayne Lordan follows up his 2nd in the Oaks with a win today 👏 — Epsom Downs Racecourse (@EpsomRacecourse) June 7, 2025 Also among Lambourn's opponents are two colts owned by the Hong Kong-based Marc Chan - Green Impact and Sir Dinadan. The Irish Derby is one of nine races the Jockey Club will offer for betting from the Curragh on Sunday night, while the simulcast programme also features two races from Saint-Cloud in France. The pick of those is the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2,400m), in which Calandagan chases an elusive elite-level breakthrough at his fifth attempt. Toowoomba trainer Lindsay Hatch celebrates huge win in Battle Of The Bush Final after avoiding ban
Lindsay Hatch has gone from facing a 12-month ban from training horses to Battle Of The Bush Final winner in the space of just a few months. The Toowoomba trainer fought a 12-month suspension for a cobalt offence earlier this year but emerged from the draining saga with only a $7500 fine. Now he and in-form jockey Angela Jones, who started as an apprentice at Hatch's stable, have won the Battle Of The Bush final after striking grey Peshwa took the honours at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The five-year-old gelding looked like a drunk giraffe in the straight but Jones used all her skills to get him over the line by a nose at $14 odds ahead of Under The Limit ($14) and favourite Invahir ($3.90). Hatch was suspended by stewards in relation to racehorse Dream Lantern returning a post-race urine sample containing cobalt above the permitted threshold after winning at Ipswich in August last year. He continued to train on a stay of proceedings and appealed the decision. Hatch eventually copped a $7500 fine in early March, although the strain of the drama left his wife Tracey an 'emotional wreck' and cost him about $40,000 in legal fees. Now he can celebrate one of the best wins in his training career. The Battle Of The Bush lives up to its name! Ghostly grey Peshwa takes it in a photo finish ðŸ'¸ Two Eagle Farm winners for Ange Jones already today ðŸ'° @BrisRacingClub — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 28, 2025 'It was enormous, I'm still shaking,' Hatch told Racenet from Townsville. 'I've got runners up here tomorrow (Sunday) so I'm just checking on my stable. 'I spoke to Ange this morning and said 'he's an ordinary horse to ride, he can lay in'. 'He didn't lay-in nowhere near as badly as he had previously but she was on to it and had the whip in the right hand. 'We both thought he was a good chance if he got the right run and she rode him beautifully.' Asked if Jones was the best rider to control the wayward gelding, Hatch replied: 'One hundred per cent. I think the light weight (53kg) helped him too because he's been carrying big weights. 'Ange is riding superbly and it's a big thrill to have her win a race for me, I can tell you that. 'It's a credit to how far she's come and it's great to see her ride so many winners. 'My wife and my two kids follow her and love her too so it's great for the family. 'I said to Ange 'I guarantee when you jump on him you'll love the horse because he's a good-looking animal'. 'Knowing Ange she'll love him – she loves all the horses – but she'll love him even more.' Jones said it was a pleasure to score a victory for her old boss Hatch. 'You know his horses are always going to be rock-hard fit, and they're going to run a good race, no matter what price they are,' she said. 'These big races mean a lot to him and all these country trainers, so it was super to get the job done. 'I was three-deep in the run but we had cover, so I was pretty happy. 'He wanted to lay-in down the straight so he was a little bit difficult to ride, but I was prepared for it and when the third horse gave us a bump, it straightened him out and might have won us the race. 'He was strong late and managed to get the job done.'

Colin Keane teams up with Kalpana for the first time in Pretty Polly clash with Whirl
Champion jockey Colin Keane rides Kalpana for the first time at the Curragh on Saturday and will hope the €300,000 Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes proves to be the correct Group One weekend option for her. The Andrew Balding-trained filly was also in the mix for Sunday's mile-and-a-half Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in Paris but instead returns to HQ for another race over 10 furlongs. Third to Los Angeles in the last month's Tattersalls Gold Cup when ridden by Oisin Murphy, Kalpana is another Juddmonte star for Keane to look forward to in his role as the ownership's number one rider in Europe. Juddmonte landed the Pretty Polly last with the subsequent Arc heroine Bluestocking and Paris in October also appears to be Kalpana's ultimate target. READ MORE A top-flight winner at a mile and a half on heavy ground last autumn, this distance may be short of her best and she could prove vulnerable to the Oaks runner up Whirl. The latter is one of just a pair of three-year-olds in a race that has favoured older runners in the last decade. However, she was only narrowly beaten at Epsom, impressed previously in the Musidora, and gets a hefty weight allowance from her elders including France's Survie. Keane teams up with Ger Lyons for the unbeaten juvenile Lady Iman in the earlier Group Two Airlie Stud Stakes. The filly has proved a wonderful advertisement for her new sire Starman and landed a Group Three at Naas last time. Before that she beat the subsequent Queen Mary winner True Love at the Curragh. Beautify was third over course and distance on her debut and Aidan O'Brien's call to pitch her straight into this sort of company is significant. Lady Iman, however, could hardly have been more impressive up to now. Colin Keane onboard Babouche. Photograph: Tom Maher/Inpho Keane and Lyons are represented by Suzie Songs in the Group Three Anglesey Stakes, a race they won with the top-class filly Babouche a year ago. The Cork winner could be up against a formidable colt in Flushing Meadows. He impressed over course and distance on his debut earlier this month. The International Stakes is named in honour of the late Kevin Prendergast who won it in 2006 with Mustameet. This time it might provide a perfect, if belated, start to the season for Elizabeth Jane. Sunday's big race in France is without Kalpana but has a handful of runners crammed with quality. Last year's Arc runner-up Aventure takes on very accomplished males such as the King George hero Goliath and Calandagan. The latter's effort will be of particular interest considering his resolution was questioned after a Coronation up defeat to Jan Brueghel. The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is off at 4.30pm Irish time. Joseph O'Brien took Al Riffa out of that big race but will be represented on the card by Scorthy Champ in the Group Two Prix Eugene Adam off at 1.55pm. He has engaged Christophe Soumillon to ride last year's National Stakes winner who finished out of the money in both the English and Irish Guineas and tries 10 furlongs for the first time.

The Last Say: Tips, late mail and market movers for 2025 Tatt's Tiara day on Saturday, June 28, 2025
Eagle Farm hosts the 76th and final Group 1 race of the 2024-25 season with the $700,000 Tatt's Tiara (1400m) today. Trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald are hoping to cap their outstanding seasons when they combine with Firestorm, rated a $4.40 chance in latest Tiara betting. Waller is hoping for a record-extending 20th Group 1 win for the season while McDonald can equal 'Miracle' Mal Johnston's long-standing riding record of 16 majors set in 1979-80. But the Peter Snowden -trained Tashi is looming as a major chance in the Tiara. The mare is one of the most consistent in training but she is still chasing her first black type success. It would be some feat if her first stakes win was at Group 1 level. At Rosehill Gardens, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott -trained French import Elamaz is $3.90 favourite to make a winning Australian debut in the Listed $200,000 WJ McKell Cup (2000m). Elamaz, who is raced in similar interests to another former French horse Eliyass, has not missed a top two finish in his seven starts, winning four races, but he has never raced beyond 1600m. At Caulfield, there has been a huge betting plunge on the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman -trained Mercurial Lady to win the Ive Handicap (1200m). Mercurial Lady has firmed from $4.20 into $3.50 favouritism after consistent support including bets of $600 at $4.20 five times, $500 at $4.20 three times, $1000 at $4.05, $670 at $4 three times, $500 at $4 three times and $720 at $3.80 three times. â– â– â– â– â– TRACK CONDITIONS ROSEHILL GARDENS Weather: Cool, mostly sunny day and a forecast top temperature of 17c. CAULFIELD Weather: Cool, mostly sunny day with light winds and a forecast top temperature of 25c. Track: Soft (6). Rail: 12m out. MORPHETTVILLE PARKS Weather: Cool, partly cloudy day with a slight chance of a shower and a forecast top temperature of 16c. Track: Soft (6). Rail: True. Simon Marshall gives us his best 2-leg multi of the day at Caulfield on Saturday ✅ — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 27, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– BE WARY Rosehill is rated a good 4 with the rail moved to 6m out (from 3m two weeks ago). Jockeys steered away from the inside at the last meeting but with a good track rating it is expected the track should play evenly. Eagle Farm is just in the soft range with the rail out 6m after being 4m out two weeks ago. Eagle Farm has been favouring leaders in recent weeks and the rail placement today is expected to advantage those on speed again. Caulfield's rail is out 12m which is usually advantageous for leaders but the track rating of a soft 6 does even things up a little. Like always, watch early races carefully for any discernible track bias. "I went away last week, but I was itching to get back." Tony Gollan was eager to return home from Royal Ascot as he shoots for the stars with improving mare Floozie in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara. @bendorries76 @tonygollan @Racing_QLD — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 26, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– ROSEHILL GARDENS TIPS BEST BET: Race 4 No.5 WEEPING WOMAN ran well first-up on an unsuitable heavy track when third to Liberty State at Rosehill then led for a long way in a fast-run race only to be collared near the line by a very impressive Sacred Rocks. It took a good horse to beat Weeping Woman last start but she is primed third-up from a spell. The firmer track is in her favour and she will make her own luck riding the speed. There's been solid support for Weeping Woman this week and she is ready to win. Sacred Rocks storms home on the outside to win the last at Rosehill! 🚀 @CMaherRacing @djgibbons22 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 THE NEXT BEST: Race 3 No.9 PUNTIN resumed with a close second behind The Great Houdini at Canterbury when he fought under a big weight in a tight finish. He's very genuine – five starts for three wins and two seconds – and will be improved by that narrow first-up loss. He's drawn a little awkward but has good tactical speed and could either lead or settle outside the leader – either way he will be in a controlling position. Puntin wins on debut! 🤩 @RachelK11 @BBakerRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 15, 2024 VALUE BET: Race 7 No.3 HOPEFUL hasn't won for three years but his recent form is solid and he gets his chance in the Stayer's Cup. He ran a competitive fifth in the Group 2 Chairman's Handicap in April then last start when he got back onto a soft 5 track he ran a close third to Sir Lucan in the Winter Cup. Hopeful will enjoy the drying track here and at $9 he's worth a gamble for his attempt to break a long winning drought. What a finish at Rosehill! Sir Lucan fights off Bear On The Loose to win the Listed Winter Cup! â'ï¸ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 THE WHISPER: Race 6 No.1 GREEN SHADOWS ran a blinder when sixth in the Civic Stakes last week. He drew the 'car park' and had to go back to near last in a big field before he charged through the ruck to be beaten two lengths behind Headley Grange. The true merit of Green Shadows' effort was reflected in the sectional times – he ran his final 600m in 34.90s with a closing 200m of 12.30s which were among the best splits all day. Green Shadows gets out to 1500m which suits and it is worth noting he has won on the seven-day back-up previously when going from 1400m to 1600m. .@GRyanRacing make it back-to-back Goulburn Cup wins! ðŸ† Green Shadows wins the Goulburn Cup with @RachelK11 on board 🙌 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 25, 2024 â– â– â– â– â– EAGLE FARM TIPS BEST BET: Race 6 No.3 MARE OF MT BULLER was very impressive when she got out to 1900m for the Epona Stakes and reeled in her rivals to win with authority. Her two runs since have been good efforts – third in The Coast and fifth in the Magic Millions National Classic – but they were over 1600m which is a short of this mare's best distance. Mare Of Mt Buller gets out to 2100m for the Gold Crown, she's in a fillies and mares race, drawn perfectly in barrier two and gets James McDonald. There's a lot to like about her today. It's Mare Of Mt Buller through the middle in the G3 Epona Stakes with @ZacLloydx steering for @cwallerracing! ðŸ' @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) March 22, 2025 NEXT BEST: Race 4 No.5 AUTUMN BOY, trained by Chris Waller, created a big impression on debut when he gave stablemate Central Coast a start and reeled him in late at Canterbury. Central Coast has since won to frank the form. Autumn Boy is going to be much better suited on a bigger track like Eagle Farm and going out to 1400m. Promising two-year-old who has been heavily backed from $4.20 into $3.70 after bets of $600 and $500 at $4.20, $666 a $4.15, $1725 at $4.05, $500 at $4 twice and $500 at $3.80. 😲 | Chris Waller may have unearthed two promising colts at Canterbury, but it wasn’t the result punters wanted with $51 outsider Autumn Boy running down $1.4m stablemate Central Coast. @RayThomas_1 @cwallerracing — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 9, 2025 VALUE BET: Race 8 no.13 TASHI has been placed seven times in stakes races – she has 10 career second placings in her 25-start career – and here she is trying to win her first stakes race in a Group 1! But this is the very consistent Tashi's chance. The Peter Snowden-trained mare goes to the Tatt's Tiara with a hat-trick of second placings in stakes races including her narrow loss to Floozie in the Dane Ripper Stakes. Tashi is well drawn, should be able to find cover in the front half of the field and she will be hitting the line hard. Floozie brains them in the G2 Dane Ripper Stakes! ðŸ'¥ @tonygollan — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 14, 2025 THE WHISPER: Race 9 No.8 NEED SOME LUCK, also from the Snowden stable, has been devoid of luck in successive Listed grade races, finishing second on the Gold Coast and then second again at Eagle Farm. On both occasions, he began slowly, settled back in the field, and has had to defy track bias to finish as close as he did. Need Some Luck, a half-brother to former champion sprinter Chautauqua, is bursting to win a race and gets his chance in the Healy Stakes. ðŸ€ That's three wins in a row to Need Some Luck, who wins first up at Randwick! @SnowdenRacing1 | @TommyBerry21 | @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 19, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– TAB FIXED ODDS BIG BETS AND MARKET MOVERS Lady Extreme has given trainer Blake Ryan every indication she’s ready to back up her slashing first-up performance at Rosehill on Saturday. — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 27, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– LADBROKE BIG BETS AND MARKET MOVERS ROSEHILL GARDENS Race 1: Khumbila $18-$9.50 with a bet of $150 at $11 Race 2: New Pharoah $5.50-$3.60, Pensitava with bets of $250 at $9.50, $250 at $9, Salute Again $13-$8.50 with a bet of $250 at $9, Red Rags To Bulls $14-$8 with a bet of $155 at $14 Race 3: Soldier Of Rome $26-$14, Don't Forget Jack $6-$3.70 with bets of $525 at $4.80, Puntin $1000 at $4.20, Tasoraay $1000 and $500 at $4.40, $595 at $3.50 Race 4: Captain Amelia with a bet of $500 at $6.50, Weeping Woman $4.20-$3.50 with a bet of $500 at $3.60, Mia Ballerina $12-$7.50 with bets of $180 at $12, Super Norwest $12-$6.50 with a bet of $180 at $12 Race 5: Livin' Thing $5.50-$4.20 including a bet of $560 at $4.60 Race 6: Green Shadows $8.50-$7.50 with bets of $500 at $8, $300 w/p at $7.50/$2.30, Thunderlips $5.50-$3.40, Testator Silens $20- $15 Race 7: Mormona $14-$7, Casual Connection $4.50-$3.20 with bets of $570 at $4.50, Bacio Del Mist $17-$7 with bets of $140 at $15 Race 8: Piggyback $5.50-$3.80 Race 9: Elamaz $4.80-$4 with a bet of $1000 at $4.80, Glory Daze $6-$3.90, Townsend $10-$7 Race 10: Eye Of The Fire $9-$6, Unstopabull $500 at $10), Snack Bar $5.50-$3.30 with a bet of $530 at $4.80, Liberty State $7.50-$5 EAGLE FARM Race 1: Mishani Lily $3.60-$2.25 with a bet of $835 at $3.40, Break Free $4-$2.70 Race 2: He's Heaven $20-$12, John Rambo $4-$3, Termagent $500 at $3.80 Race 3: Invahir $8.50-$4.80, Kazza's Jet $31-$12 Race 4: Brave Design $3.60-$3.30 with bets of $800 at $3.50, Autumn Boy $4.20-$3.70 with bets of $600 and $500 at $4.20, $666 a $4.15, $1725 at $4.05, $500 at $4 twice, $500 at $3.80 Race 5: Banker's Choice $9.50-$6.50, Mr Waterville $21-$7 with a bet of $165 at $13 Race 6: Mare Of Mt Buller $3.60-$2.80 with a bet of $770 at $3.60, Thalassophile $16-$11 with bets of $135 at $16, Quietness $6-$4.80 with a bet of $525 at $4.80, $650 at $4.40 Race 7: Rising Pacific with a bet of $1000 w/p at $9.25/$2.90, The Inflictor $6.50-$4 with a $365 bet at $6.50 Race 8: Grinzinger Belle with a bet of $500 at $14, Infancy $35-$19, Floozie $2000 at $4.60, $500 at $4.50, $550 at $4.40 Race 9: Metalart $8.50-$6.50, Midnight In Tokyo $26-$14 CAULFIELD Race 1: Frostnip $14-$8.50 with a bet of $155 at $14 Race 2: Manolo Bling $3.50-$2.60, Trembles $5-$4.20 with bets of $300 at $5, $525 at $4.80 twice Race 3: Stage 'N' Screen $5-$3.70 with a bet of $500 at $5, Xarpo $300 at $7.50, Mercurial Lady $4.20-$3.50 with bets of $600 at $4.20 five times, $500 at $4.20 three times, $1000 at $4.05, $670 at $4 three times, $500 at $4 three times, $720 at $3.80 three times Race 4: Harry's Yacht $4.80-$3.50 with a bet of $500 at $5, Race 5: Euphoric $500 at $5, Captain Electric $3.30-$3.80-$2.80 with a bet of $715 at $3.80 Race 6: Cheerstothat $5.50-$3.70 with a bet of $445 at $5.50 Race 7: Chinqui $7-$6.50 with bets of $250 each-way at $7/$2.40, Raikoke $7.50-$6 Race 8: Milford with bets of $300 and $150 at $14, Sayedaty Sadaty $5-$3.70 with a bet of $500 at $5, Fame $26-$15, Amberite $20-$7 with bets of $125 a $17, $180 at $12 Race 9: Run Harry Run $10-$6.50 with a bet of $220 at $10, The Open $625 at $4.20, $670 at $4 Yellow Sam continues her comeback at Caulfield on Saturday, coincidently 50 years ago to the day the Irish hurdler she is named after landed a massive betting plunge. @gilbertgardiner — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 27, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– INTERSTATE MAIL Caulfield Race 1 No.6 OYSTER LANE Caulfield Race 3 No.10 MERCURIAL LADY Caulfield Race 6 No.3 THE BLACK CLOUD Caulfield Race 9 No.10 THE OPEN Morphettville Race 4 No.6 FICKLE Morphettville Race 6 No.12 MARK OF THE MAN Phillip Stokes colt Matahga will be hard to beat in the Oaklands Plate at Morphettville Parks as he sets out on a proven path to Group 1 success. — Racenet (@RacenetTweets) June 27, 2025 â– â– â– â– â–
