At Chilla border, Noida police starts checks for old vehicles entering city
Noida: As fuel stations across Delhi started refusing service to end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, traffic police on Tuesday launched an enforcement drive at the Chilla border to seize any such cars entering Noida, and impounded 23 from across the NCR city. Police officials said they will scale up the drive in the coming days. Diesel vehicles more than 10 years old, and petrol ones older than 15 years are categorised as EOL. They did not find any EOL vehicles at the Chilla border, though a Delhi-registered hatchback with an illegally installed CNG kit was seized. The car's owner Narendra Bansal, who lives in Jawahar Nagar in the capital, said he was driving a 2012 model and was planning to buy a new vehicle before his i10 crossed the 15-year mark in 2027. "We have started checking end-of-life vehicles coming from Delhi to Noida. If any such vehicle is found, we will seize it as per the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directions," a traffic police officer said. He added that the drive will continue, and similar checks will be introduced at other city borders with Delhi. Separately, Noida police used the integrated traffic management system (ITMS) to identify EOL vehicles across the city and in Greater Noida. "We seized 23 vehicles — 10 petrol and 13 diesel — in the city as a drive was carried out. It will continue," said Vinay Tomar, a traffic sub-inspector at ITMS Noida. Apart from weeding out EOL vehicles, Noida police's drive is a precursor to broader implementation of the ban that was enforced in Delhi from Tuesday. In Noida and four other NCR cities (Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Sonipat), petrol pumps will stop selling fuel for EOL vehicles from Nov 1. UP Police are planning to install automated number plate recognition cameras at 101 petrol pumps in Noida and 121 in Ghaziabad by the end of Oct. These cameras will be used to identify EOL vehicles at the filling stations, so fuel can be denied. Between Noida and Ghaziabad, there are an estimated 4 lakh end-of-life vehicles. Data by transport authorities shows there are nearly 1.7 lakh lakh petrol-run EOL vehicles, and 40,000 diesel-run ones in Noida. In Ghaziabad, 1.9 lakh end-of-life vehicles are fuelled by petrol, diesel EOL vehicles are logged at 50,000. Despite these figures, EOL vehicles aren't off the roads. Just over 3,000 EOL vehicles were impounded across UP in 2023, and this count was even lower — at 1,934 — in 2024. The ban on EOL vehicles was first mandated by the National Green Tribunal in 2015 and reinforced by the Supreme Court in 2018 to deal with the region's years-long air pollution crisis. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR announced earlier this year that petrol pumps in the capital city will need to refuse fuel to EOL vehicles from July 1. Owners of older vehicles said they had no option but to buy a new car. "I have a 2010-model diesel-powered Hyundai Verna. This car is still in good condition. However, due to the NGT and govt restrictions, I was worried about getting challaned or having my vehicle impounded. So, I decided to replace it," said Harinder Bhati, a resident of Sector Beta 1 in Greater Noida, who recently bought a Kia Seltos. Bhati said he could afford a new car, but many families in NCR would not be able to. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Want a city car? Buy this one
We know cars like the i10 as city cars but there's little to stop them being everyday family transport these days, such is their capability. Certainly, in the i10's case, when it comes to accommodating people, it does it easily enough. An average-sized adult can sit behind the same with a couple of inches of both head and leg room to spare, although three people across the rear bench is a squeeze. A decent driving position is pretty simple to achieve, with surprising space around your extremities and a seat that positions and holds you square at the controls. The seats themselves are smaller than in bigger family cars but supportive and comfortable over longer distances and the gearlever is sited medium-high. The steering wheel adjusts for rake only, sadly, and a rotary dial to recline the seat would be better than a lever. But Hyundai has largely kept things uncomplicated and the i10 is better for it. There are big, clear rotary dials for the ventilation and similarly large buttons for driver and comfort aids. While it is an intuitive place to sit, the interior's visual attractiveness is lacking somewhat. It's no worse than an MG 3, but a Toyota Aygo X or Fiat 500 are a bit bolder with their choice of shades, textures and colours. Advance cars get textured grey plastic, while Premium-trim variants get a more eye-catching honeycomb design on the door trims, dashboard and centre console - but it never quite pulls the interior up a notch. Perceived quality is about right for this price point, with lots of hard, scratchy materials, but it helps that they feel well screwed-together and the buttons and stalks are nicely damped. The front of the cabin is practical and gets plenty of storage options, from a shelf above the glovebox to a whole host of them along the centre tunnel. The glovebox itself is also of a useful size, as are the front cupholders. Practicality continues to the rear. If you're looking for a car of this size, it's a reasonable bet that you're not prioritising boot space, but in its class, the i10's 252 litres and 60/40 split fold rear seat are competitive. As far as technology is concerned, there's a USB-C port, a 12V outlet next to it and a rather outdated USB point you use to connect your phone to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Which brings us to the infotainment system. It's curious to find a large, 8.0in central touchscreen like the i10's that has so few standard features. You can pair a phone to its Bluetooth system and play music through it, too, or it will control the radio. And you can change some settings – notably which two things sit on the home screen, plus amend the 'star' shortcut button to the bottom left. That it doesn't do too much else is fine, because you'll own a smartphone that does navigation, contains your favourite music and can read out your messages just as well as - if not better than - many automotive systems. That being said, when you set a waypoint on the Hyundai's native sat-nav, a dotted line appears showing you the direction to your destination as the crow flies. This is presumably so you can find a better route if stuck in traffic, which is very useful. While we're grumbling, for this generation Hyundai saw fit to omit a speedometer and rev counter for a digital display with revs measured as decimals. This makes it needlessly more difficult and less intuitive to know when to change gear, for both optimum performance and economy.

Hyundai Motor Group captures more South African market share
Hyundai Motor Group recorded a 37 percent year-on-year increase in passenger car sales in South Africa last month, strengthening its foothold in one of Africa's largest automotive markets. The Korean mobility giant, comprising Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, sold a combined total of 4,266 vehicles in April, according to a National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa report issued earlier this month. Hyundai Motor Company accounted for 2,989 units, up 41 percent from a year earlier, and its smaller affiliate Kia marked a 24 percent increase with 1,277 units sold. Thanks to this robust growth, Hyundai Motor Company became the fourth-largest automaker by sales volume in South Africa, overtaking Ford and trailing behind Toyota, Suzuki and Volkswagen. Hyundai Motor Group also maintained its fourth-place ranking among global automotive groups in South Africa for both April 2024 and April 2025. The April sales boost pushed the group's year-to-date sales up by 27 percent, outpacing the overall market growth of 16.9 percent during the same period. According to automotive data tracker Marklines, the group's success in South Africa is largely driven by a renewed appreciation for its strategic models tailored to local conditions. Hyundai Motor's compact hatchback i10 has played a pivotal role, with 1,425 sold in April alone — a 73 percent increase on-year. Produced primarily at Hyundai's Indian manufacturing facilities, the car's compact size — 3,765 millimeters in length and 1,660 mm in width — offers agile maneuverability in narrow urban environments. Last year, the i10 accounted for 14,410 of the 45,556 vehicles Hyundai Motor Group sold in South Africa, ranking fifth among all passenger vehicles sold in the country in 2024. Other compact models tailored to the region, such as Kia's sport utility vehicle Sonet, also contributed significantly to the group's sales, according to Marklines. South Africa is the largest car market in Africa. Last year, the country's vehicle demand reached approximately 351,556 units, accounting for nearly half of the continent's total sales estimation of 775,597, according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. To sustain growth amid rapidly shifting international market conditions, Hyundai plans to accelerate its penetration into previously less-focused markets by introducing more models tailored specifically to regional needs.

After trialling and testing, they found the top ten cars you can buy in the UK right now that fall into the lowest insurance groups. TheHyundai i10, specifically the 1.0 litre automatic, is a favourable option READ MORE: UK drivers warned of new MOT rules that would follow European Union's lead If you're looking for cheap insurance, the Hyundai i10 1.0 auto is a good option, but the compromise with this car is its petrol engine and automatic gearbox. While these aspects of the car aren't preferred, it means that its cheapest model to insurance, the 1.0-litre engine, falls into group one of the lowest payments. Another car making the list is the Volkswagen Polo 1.0 Life, which requires less compromise on quality, falling into group three of the cheapest premium around. It hosts what the car experts have called an 'eager engine' and happens to be very economical. In order to get that insurance on the cheaper side, you need to look at the basic Polo Life, but it does come with its perks. This model has all-round electric windows and digital instruments, so its inside doesn't appear to be too bare. Joining them on the top ten list is the Kia Picanto 1.0 DPi 2, which is a car with a slightly sportier feel and more engaging to drive than the Hyundai i10, while they may be identical under the skin. The testing suggests that when it comes to nipping out or driving on country roads, it's surprisingly good fun, and its tiny metre turning circle makes it a breeze for parking in tight spaces. The SEAT Ibiza also made the list for cheaper cars to insure as a small hatchback, dressed to impress without breaking your bank account. A five-star Euro NCAP crash test has proved that the Ibiza is sure to keep you safe, and it's practical too, with plenty of room for a pair of adults and a big boot to go with it. Also making the list were the Skoda Fabia 1.0 MPI, the Toyota Aygo X 1.0 Pure and the Volkswagen Caddy MPV 1.5 TSI models. As well as this, they suggest the Fiat 500 1.0 Hybrid, Renault Clio 1.0 TCe Evolution and SEAT Arona 1.0 TSI SE Edition were also some of the cheaper cars to insure.
