A report out of Korea says that mass production of the tablet's OLED panels by Samsung and LG has started. The device could end up being unveiled in October or November and released in time for the 2025 holiday shopping season. Last year, Samsung supplied Apple with the OLED displays for the 11-inch M4 iPad Pro while fellow South Korean company LG produced the 13-inch OLED panel for the 2024 iPad Pro. This year, reports suggest that both LG and Samsung will each deliver 11-inch and 13-inch displays used on the iPad Pro (2025) models. Last year's iPad Pro (2024) tablets were the first from Apple to replace the LCD panels with OLED. OLED displays offer users a screen with better contrast, darker blacks, and wider viewing angles. Because OLED pixels generate their own light, no backlight is needed for OLED displays. Thus, such screens are thinner and are more flexible than LCD displays. Devices using an OLED panel can save battery life by going into Dark mode. That's because creating the color black on OLED is a matter of turning off a pixel and pixels that are turned off do not need to draw power from the battery. Apple is expected to convert the display on the iPad mini to OLED next year and do the same with the iPad Air in 2027. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said that the Apple logo on the back of the tablet will now be in landscape orientation as opposed to the previous portrait orientation. It is reported (by The Elec via MacRumors) that the company could switch the display drivers for its iPad Pro OLED panels from Samsung's to those manufactured by LX Semicon. It would also then adopt LG Innotek's CoF technology, too. This latter tech enables display driver hardware to be attached to panels using heat compression on flexible film. This is how signals can be sent to the OLED panel to drive individual pixels. It is also a process that allows for the edges of the panel to run tighter to the enclosure – thereby potentially reducing bezel sizes. Apple has already made significant strides in reducing the frame around the screen in recent times, it also jumped to OLED for its current model – the iPad Pro M4 – which improved already excellent picture performance to another level. There's also the option for nano texture glass on spec'ed up models, to reduce glare and create a more paper-like feel. However, it's the shrinking of the bezels that attracts me most to a possible future purchase. Having owned an 11-inch M2 iPad Pro since its launch in 2022, I've not had the inclination nor need for a replacement. However, it's fairly heavy, and I'd happily swap it in for something lighter and a touch smaller. Alternatively, I'm all up for a larger screen with no physical trade-off. Especially considering the new MacBook-like features coming with iPadOS 26. The only issue is whether Apple will sign a new display supply deal before the iPad Pro M5 is due in stores. It might just be I'll have to wait a bit longer. Ah well, I'm a patient chap.
