Sky's latest iPhone 16e deal works out at 6p per day - here's how
The device has a 'supersized battery life' with up to 26 hours of video playback Sky Mobile has launched a new contract deal on Apple's iPhone 16e. The network provider is rolling out a 24-month contract on the device for £18 per month, working out at 6p per day based on a 30-day calendar month. There's also no upfront cost to pay for the device, meaning shoppers don't have to part with hundreds all at once. The deal is based on an iPhone 16e with 128GB of storage. The cheapest plan is currently the 10GB data option, with prices starting at £1 for the first three months and increasing to £14 thereafter. This is ontop of the £18 per month device cost. Sky recommends its 3GB data plan as a 'great value' choice. For £22, consumers can opt for the unlimited data plan. In terms of specs, the iPhone 16e has a 6.1‑inch Super Retina, a 26-hour battery life, and an additional 11 hours of video playback. When there isn't a mobile service or Wi-Fi nearby, iPhone 16e can connect users to a satellite. For customers who prefer buying their phones outright, the official Apple storefront on Amazon has the iPhone 16e (128GB) for £544, down from £599. The larger storage option of 256GB, the price is £632.97. Elsewhere, it is a big day for Galaxy fans as Samsung releases its new phones—the Z Fold7 and the Z Flip7 for all UK shoppers, including at retailer However, it is worth noting that the cheaper monthly deals come with hefty upfront costs. On the iPhone 16e, tech editor Dave Snelling says: "Don't think that a more budget-friendly price means bargain basement features, as there is plenty to like about the 2025 iPhone 16e. Firstly, it finally ditches the bezels found on the original SE and gets an all-screen finish instead. That means the end of the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, with the 16e getting Face ID technology instead. "This lets users unlock the bigger 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR screen and make payments just by staring at the front-facing camera. It's made from tough stuff and should survive years stuffed in pockets thanks to Apple's Ceramic Shield technology and a waterproof design." Consumers new to Sky Mobile can find reviews and ratings of its service via Trustpilot. One person said: "I was with EE and the prices kept increasing. I switched to Sky and although the O2 signal is not the best. "The SIM only plan is £4.50 a month. I have moved the household over to SKY so we can share the data we have banked." Another user reported issues with Sky Mobile when it was time to upgrade, writing: "Placed my order but failed the credit check stage and they could not tell me why. Went elsewhere and got the phone I wanted at the contract I wanted with no delay. Shame because I had liked Sky Mobile up until that point." An additional Sky Mobile user concluded: "Called up to cancel a SIM as the contract had come to an end. Spoke with a really, really nice guy named Jack. He is the epitome of customer service! Went above and beyond."

Small screens and big ambitions shape new Android flagships
An intriguing shift is underway in India's smartphone market, underlined by a new generation of flagship phones. These are smaller in size, and while sporting similarly premium price tags, better ergonomics work in their favour. Smartphone makers Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, as well as Apple and Samsung, now sell powerful phones with screen sizes that are either 6.3-inches or smaller. In recent years, 6.7-inch and thereabouts screen sizes became the norm for flagships. (Representative file photo) Yet, there are layers to this — overcoming challenges posed by smaller dimensions, sustaining consumer interest, and making compact phones more affordable. In recent years, 6.7-inch and thereabouts screen sizes became the norm for flagships. This evolution now puts the widest selection of smaller phones, for buyers to choose from. The Vivo X200 FE, which went on sale this week, finds competition from the Xiaomi 15, OnePlus 13s, as well as Samsung's Galaxy S25 and the iPhone 16e. Current market prices peg these between ₹50,000 and ₹80,000. 'Compact flagships are gaining priority in India as users often face challenges with large-screen smartphones, such as difficulty operating them with one hand and maintaining a secure grip, raising chances of accidental drops. This has made one-handed usability a key consideration for many consumers,' Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, tells HT. Their latest study reveals 74% of young professionals based in India, have a preference for compact smartphones. In a way, this is the smartphone market coming a full circle. 'This is not a sudden shift. Flagship portfolios have traditionally featured two size formats. Ten years ago, it was 5 inches and 5.5 inches. Today, it is closer to 6.3 inches and 6.7 inches,' says Anuj Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer, Xiaomi India. Phones became bigger with time, and now there's a return to some smaller sizes as well. He believes this clearly reflects the needs of two distinct consumer groups—those focused on content creation and consumption, and those who prioritise mobility with one-handed usage. But there is still apprehension, in terms of consumer demographic willing to use compact phones in the long term. 'We are not expecting compact phones to be more than 5% of the total sales this year,' says Faisal Kawoosa, Chief Analyst and co-founder of Techarc. Content consumption trends, and user age, are primary reasons. There's an element of variety in a smartphone portfolio, with focus presently on the premium bands. 'While large-screen smartphones continue to dominate the market, phone makers are strategically positioning compact devices as differentiated offerings,' explains Prabhu Ram, Vice President - Industry Research Group, at CyberMedia Research (CMR). For phone makers, it hasn't been easy to get it right, from a technology standpoint. 'Delivering true flagship performance in a compact size is not a small challenge. With limited internal space in compact devices, this often leads to trade-offs in performance, cooling, and battery endurance. Still, we rose to the challenge,' explains Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India. The OnePlus 13s retains specs expected in a top-tier phone, as do the Xiaomi 15 and Vivo X200 FE phones. These include the latest chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek, denser batteries with reconfigured composition for higher capacity, and top-tier cameras optimised by camera makers — Xiaomi has Leica's expertise on its side, while Vivo relies on Zeiss for tuning. 'Foldable phones and compact form factors represent engineering milestones that resonate with distinct consumer profiles,' says CMR's Ram. This market transformation may well be credited to Apple, who launched the 6.1-inch iPhone 16e earlier this year. 'Apple did it for a purpose which was to bring its latest features, especially AI, to a lower price tier and eventually replace the trend of a large segment buying older generation iPhones,' says Techarc's Kawoosa. Apple wants as many users as possible, to buy and use their latest generation hardware, and therefore a strong argument for the iPhone 16e. 'Our belief is that our customers want as much display as they can, in the most comfortable form factor,' Bob Borchers, who is Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, explained to HT in a conversation, at the time. A logical next step would be to percolate this trend to more affordable mid-range phones too. Phone makers seem open to the idea. 'From both a technology and portfolio standpoint, the OnePlus 13s marks the beginning of a new chapter for compact flagships in the industry. This opens an exciting roadmap for similar compact mid-range offerings,' says OnePlus India's Liu. Counterpoint's Pathak believes the screen size choice is likely to trickle down to mid-range buyers as well. 'With brands actively launching new phones round the year, introducing compact designs in the mid-range segment could prove fruitful,' he opines. Xiaomi's Sharma insists 'smartphone design will be increasingly shaped by user context', and that compact flagships no longer remain niche. There is consensus that a wider spectrum of choice is good for consumers.

Apple iOS 18.6 Release Date: When Will The Next Major iPhone Update Go Live?
Apple's iPhone software is drawing a lot of attention right now. The first public beta of the next version, iOS 26, is due to land any second now (read this for exactly when) and what could be the final big release of the current cycle, iOS 18, is on the glide path, too. Here's when to expect it. iOS 18.6 is about to land on the iPhone. iOS 18.6 Release Date Apple iOS 18.6 Release Candidate appeared on Monday, July 21. In case you don't know, though you probably worked it out from the title, this is the version that is considered good enough to be released to general use. That doesn't mean there can't be changes but unless something goes madly wrong in the next few days, expect this to be the one Apple will release. Not only did the developer beta of the Release Candidate go live, but so did the public beta version. It will be compatible with phones going back to the iPhone Xs and right up to the latest, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16e, for instance. Apple routinely presses go on the general release a week after the Release Candidate, which means week commencing Monday, July 28. Which day is up for grabs but the company definitely prioritizes Monday or Tuesday if it can. Recently, it's had quite a series of Monday releases, so that's the day I think it will be. If, by around 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday, July 28 it hasn't surfaced, then the next day, Tuesday, July 29, is a shoo-in. iOS 18.6: What's In The Release? You won't be surprised to hear that this will not be a feature-packed update. In fact, as MacRumors points out, it's sparse on the features front. 'No notable new features have been found in the iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 betas, so it's not clear what might be added in the update, though there are some changes to the App Store in the EU due to the DMA. Rumors suggest that Apple wanted to expand Apple Intelligence to China with iOS 18.6, but regulatory hurdles have delayed the launch,' it reports. Instead, expect a focus on small updates and bug fixes. Any new features Apple has planned will, it seems, now be saved for iOS 26 this fall.
