iPhone 17 just tipped to get bigger — now more Pro-sized

When the base iPhone 17 arrives later this year, it might be a disappointment for people who prefer more compact phones. A new rumor claims the screen size for the standard iPhone will be getting an increase, following in the footsteps of the current Pro model that debuted last fall. According to regular leaker Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 17 is getting a bump from 6.1-inches to 6.3-inches. the same size as the iPhone 16 Pro. "I mentioned before that there are two new 6.3 small straight screens in the next generation in China, including the iPhone17 screen size has become 6.27/6.3," Digital Chat Station wrote on Weibo, based on a machine translation. Last year, Apple bumped up the screen size on the Pro models, but left the base iPhone 16 alone. The iPhone 16 Pro jumped from 6.1 to 6.3 inches while the iPhone 16 Pro Max increased from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. So far we believe that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will retain the sizes of their iPhone 16 counterparts. It's not a big bump in iPhone 17 screen size, but does continue the trend of smartphones growing over the last couple of years. The DCS rumor seems to confirm a previous one from display analyst Ross Young who forecast the same size for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro screens last month. Outside of a size increase, the iPhone 17 panel should improve in other ways, some reports claiming that iPhone 17 will feature a ProMotion display. That's Apple's branding for screens with faster refresh rates, a feature currently reserved for the Pro models. Korean publication ETNews also reports that all iPhone 17 models will get 120Hz displays this year. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Assuming Apple sticks with its usual release schedule, we should see the iPhone 17 in September when Apple typically announces the next generation of iPhone.

Apple Loop: iPhone 17 Pro's Surprising Secret, MacOS Attacks Gaming, Apple's Finder Problem

Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise attend the European Premiere of Apple's "F1 The Movie" at Cineworld, ... More Leicester Square on June 23, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by)Taking a look back at this week's news and headlines from across the Apple world, including iPhone 17 Pro design leaks, a secret iPhone surprise, F1 the Movie's In-App woes, iPhone 17 Air's lightweight upgrade, specs for the next A Series chipset, new macOS apps from Apple, and the problem with the Finder logo is still there. Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Apple in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes. We've got a closer look at one of the more contentious changes to the iPhone 17 design this week, with pictures of the camera bar in action. This replaces the Majin Blu leaked images, showing the new iPhone 17 Pro design, and its redesigned camera bar that stretches to the edges of the handset: '…the reason it's interesting is that it shows the new camera panel design in a way that many will find attractive. Previously, I've been skeptical about how the predicted wider camera panel will work in practice. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed that the panel would not be black on all models, that it would match the color of the iPhone." (X via Forbes). Announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this month was the new user interface for iOS 26. While the liquid glass UI will appear across every iPhone running the updated software, will the iPhone 17 user base have a hidden musical surprise? "The ringtone is a new version of the Reflection ringtone which has been the default option since the iPhone X launched in 2017. As Perris suggests, it could be an indication that the ringtone will be restricted, to select handsets when it is released. Perris notes that the remix is, 'a glassy new ringtone called 'ReflectionAlt1-EncoreRemix'. It's not live yet in the beta but it is present in the filesystem. Perhaps an iPhone 17 exclusive,' he asks." (Forbes). F1 The Movie And Apple's In-App Guidelines Apple is in full promotional mode for its F1 The Movie release and is taking every opportunity to mention it. Apple users who are seeing pop-up alerts for the film in their notification bar are wondering why they are receiving these promotions, which many feel are prohibited by Apple's own guidelines. "Apple customers aren't thrilled they're getting an ad from the Apple Wallet app promoting the tech giant's original film 'F1 the Movie.' Across social media, iPhone owners are complaining that their Wallet app sent out a push notification offering a $10 discount at Fandango for anyone buying two or more tickets to the film… However well-received the film may be, iPhone users don't necessarily want their built-in utilities, like their digital wallet, marketing to them. (TechCrunch). iPhone 17 Air Exclusive The iPhone 16e debuted Apple's C1 Modem, the first tangible result from Apple's purchase of Intel's modem division in a $1 billion deal. The majority of the next iPhone is expected to still use Qualcomm's modem technology. The fashionably thin iPhone 17 Air is set to run the modem and reap the benefits of the smaller design: "This new iPhone will launch in the fall as a replacement for the Plus model in Apple's lineup. It will emphasize form over function, with a radically thin design, single rear camera, and yes, the C1 modem. One likely reason Apple's bringing C1 to the iPhone 17 Air is for its efficiency improvements. Those will undoubtedly be important for a model that has less physical space for battery." (9to5Mac). A19 Specs The A18 chipset is expected to debut with the iPhone 17 family, but work has begun on next year's powerful upgrade. The standard, already set by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Elite 2, could be surpassed if Apple want it, but there may be a bigger goal in mind: "…it is believed that Apple's A19 chip could be as fast as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. The Elite 2 is a yet-to-launch chipset that follows the Snapdragon 8 Elite, used in high-performance Android smartphones… While Apple observers will be happy to hear the performance similarity, the actual result in consumer devices could be lower. The leaker adds that Apple still focuses on PPA (Power, Performance, Area) in its chip designs, and prefers to work with energy efficiency in mind." (Apple Insider). New macOS Apps From Tahoe Tucked into the upcoming macOS 26 release are two new apps. Journal comes over from iOS to help organise your thoughts and ideas—no doubt with some Continuity for synchronising, and a new Phone app supports calls and messaging again through Continuity. The curious third addition is Apple Games. As Tim Cook and his team try to gain traction against the might of Xbox and PlayStation, as well as the flexibility of the Steam Deck, can Apple finally get gaming right this time ? "The new Games app will arrive simultaneously in macOS Tahoe, iOS 26, and iPadOS 26 as a one-stop hub for all your gaming needs. Features include the ability to discover new games, launch any titles installed on your Mac, and keep up with friends via leaderboards, challenges, and more." (9to5Mac). And Finally... How much damage is Apple doing to the brand with its changes to the Finder logo. The new push to a unified UI has led to an alteration of one of the longest-standing brand images in computing. Given the pushback from the community, Apple is doing a lot of damage for very little return: "The Finder logo is the Mac logo. The Macintosh is the platform that held Apple together when, by all rights, the company should have fallen apart. It's a great logo, period, and the second-most-important logo Apple owns, after the Apple logo itself. Fucking around with it like this, making the right-side in-profile face a stick-on layer rather than a full half of the mark, is akin to Coca-Cola fucking around with the typeface for the word 'Cola' in its logo. Like, what are you doing? Why are you screwing with a perfect mark?" (Daring Fireball). Apple Loop brings you seven days worth of highlights every weekend here on Forbes. Samsung Galaxy S26 series may outpace iPhone 17 with higher RAM offering: Report

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S26 series, expected to debut soon, could feature a substantial upgrade in memory, according to a new leak. The flagship smartphone lineup, expectedly comprising the standard Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26+, and Galaxy S26 Ultra, may come equipped with up to 16GB of RAM, a notable increase over their predecessors. Leaked information shared by tipster Jukan Choi (@Jukanlosreve), referencing data from Macquarie Research, suggests that Samsung plans to offer 16GB RAM variants of all three Galaxy S26 models globally. This could be a considerable jump from the current Galaxy S25 series, where only the Galaxy S25 Ultra comes with 16GB RAM, and that too only in select regions such as South Korea and China. The base Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ models are presently limited to 12GB RAM configurations. The reported memory enhancement appears aimed at supporting Samsung's expanding suite of Galaxy AI tools, which are expected to play a major role in the S26 series. Increased RAM could also improve multitasking, gaming, and overall system performance, positioning Samsung's next-gen flagships more competitively against rivals, particularly Chinese brands like OnePlus and Red Magic, which already offer smartphones with up to 24GB of RAM. The leak also sheds light on Apple's future plans. The iPhone 17 series, likely to launch in September, could introduce a 12GB RAM option across its lineup, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This would mark a step up from the 8GB RAM currently found in the iPhone 16 range. However, Apple's iPhone 18 series, tipped for release next year, is expected to maintain the same 12GB RAM configuration. As competition intensifies in the premium smartphone segment, memory upgrades are becoming increasingly crucial to support new AI-powered experiences and demanding user tasks. If the leak holds true, Samsung's Galaxy S26 series could gain a notable edge by offering higher memory across its entire lineup.

Forget the iPhone 17, 2026 and 2027 are shaping up to be massive iPhone

Information on the iPhone 17 series continues to unofficially spill out, and while a new-look camera setup is set to divide opinion this isn't the iPhone you need to be getting excited about. I'm instead talking iPhone 18, iPhone 19 and iPhone Fold. The latest reports have shed more light on the future of iPhone, and if the rumors turn out to be accurate we're in for significant iPhone installments in 2026 and 2027. Recommended Videos That's not to say there won't be anything to write home about on the iPhone 17 series. 'Inside sources' claim the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will be the first iPhone with a vapor chamber cooling system for improved heat management, which could see Apple shift to lighter aluminium frames (bye bye titanium?). And let's not forget the on-going chatter around the super slim iPhone 17 Air, which Apple is apparently lining up to directly rival the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. But compared to what's rumored to be coming in the next couple of years, you may want to hold off an upgrade this year. 2026: the foldable iPhone Apple has been sitting back and watching Android phone manufacturers bring foldable phones to market, iterating and improving year over year. They've basically shown Apple all the pitfalls of getting into the foldable market, and how to solve them. So if Apple is to launch the much-rumored iPhone Fold, it's unlikely we'll be served up a device which feels first-gen. What's more likely is a slick, polished foldable capable of challenging the established names, while delivering the form factor in a uniquely Apple way. And according to respected analyst Mung-Chi Kuo, Apple is currently on track to deliver the iPhone Fold in the second half of 2026. If the foldable iPhone is to arrive next year, it will likely appear as part of the iPhone 18 series, which is being tipped to feature a significant advancement in chipset technology. The A20 chip expected to be used in these iPhones is said to be the first based on a 2nm architecture. What does that mean? Smaller transistors, allowing companies to pack more into a chip, resulting in significant performance enhancements. If these reports are true, the iPhone Fold might well be one of the most powerful foldables on the market. We're also seeing some enticing iPhone Fold specs being rumored, as well-known leaker Digital Chat Station claims the phone will feature a 7.58-inch inner display, titanium frame and dual 48MP rear cameras. While the screen size would be a little smaller than the Oppo Find N5 (8.12 inches), Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (8 inches) and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (7.6 inches), it might mean we get a compact and pocketable device which doesn't feel big or bulky. As for the cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has two 48MP rear cameras, alongside a third 12MP telephoto lens, which suggests the iPhone Fold could well have some serious photography chops. But if even the best foldable phones don't float your boat, 2027 may have something even cooler in store for us. 2027: the all-screen iPhone 19 2027 will mark iPhone's 20th anniversary, and word on the street is Apple might be cooking up something pretty special to mark the occasion. Notable Apple reporter, Mark Gurman, said in one of his recent Power On newsletters for Bloomberg, that Apple is working on an iPhone 19 with no notch (the physical Dynamic Island) and virtually no bezels around the screen – giving us a fully edge-to-edge display. To make the all-screen iPhone a reality it will have to pack in some new tech (for Apple), with an under-screen Face ID and selfie camera for a truly uninterrupted screen experience. These reports make the iPhone 17 series sound a little less appealing. Sure a new cooling system and funky rear camera layout will be interesting, plus iOS 26 will make it feel like a bigger upgrade, but 2026 and 2027 is where the iPhone is set to revolutionize the market… again. Now, what's happening about that portless iPhone rumored back in 2019?

Apple iPhone 17 Air: Did Apple Just Accidentally Leak A Key Design Detail?

Apple recently released its second developer beta of the next iPhone software, iOS 26. It's what the iPhone 17 series will run on when the handsets are released. But it looks like Apple has given something away about one of the new phones, perhaps by mistake. Has Apple just revealed what the display on the iPhone 17 "Air" will look like? As spotted by Macworld, deep in the code for the latest developer beta is a new version of the popular clownfish iPhone wallpaper. So what, you might say, that's nothing new. Except this one is. The new wallpaper has 'a resolution of '420×912@3x,' or 1260×2736 pixels. There's no iPhone model with such a resolution, at least not yet,' the report pointed out. That's pretty clear that one of the iPhones in development will have this all-new screen size, which ties in perfectly with the reports that have leaked about the super-slim iPhone in development, nicknamed iPhone 17 Air. 'The new resolution wallpaper we found matches a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last year, which claimed that the iPhone 17 Air would have a screen of around 6.6 inches with a resolution of approximately 1260×2740. In other words, the wallpaper all but confirms the existence of a new iPhone model with that exact display resolution. Given that iOS 26 will almost certainly be released in September along with the new iPhones, it's clear that Apple is already making the final adjustments for the next-generation iPhone,' Macworld explained. The publication even suggests the new wallpaper was left in the beta entirely by accident: 'Since other iOS 26 wallpapers don't have that resolution, most likely the wallpaper was forgotten by Apple within the build released today for developers and shouldn't be seen by the public,' it said. Well, the truth is you never know with Apple. Could they have planted it in the beta to get everyone talking? Personally, I adhere to the cock-up theory of history rather than the conspiracy one, but who knows? The Prompt: Get the week's biggest AI news on the buzziest companies and boldest breakthroughs, in your Subscribed! You're Subscribed! If it vanishes when the third beta is released, it may indicate a mistake. Either way, it seems to double down on the belief that the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display, which is good to know.
