Forget the iPhone 17, 2026 and 2027 are shaping up to be massive iPhone
Information on the iPhone 17 series continues to unofficially spill out, and while a new-look camera setup is set to divide opinion this isn't the iPhone you need to be getting excited about. I'm instead talking iPhone 18, iPhone 19 and iPhone Fold. The latest reports have shed more light on the future of iPhone, and if the rumors turn out to be accurate we're in for significant iPhone installments in 2026 and 2027. Recommended Videos That's not to say there won't be anything to write home about on the iPhone 17 series. 'Inside sources' claim the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will be the first iPhone with a vapor chamber cooling system for improved heat management, which could see Apple shift to lighter aluminium frames (bye bye titanium?). And let's not forget the on-going chatter around the super slim iPhone 17 Air, which Apple is apparently lining up to directly rival the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. But compared to what's rumored to be coming in the next couple of years, you may want to hold off an upgrade this year. 2026: the foldable iPhone Apple has been sitting back and watching Android phone manufacturers bring foldable phones to market, iterating and improving year over year. They've basically shown Apple all the pitfalls of getting into the foldable market, and how to solve them. So if Apple is to launch the much-rumored iPhone Fold, it's unlikely we'll be served up a device which feels first-gen. What's more likely is a slick, polished foldable capable of challenging the established names, while delivering the form factor in a uniquely Apple way. And according to respected analyst Mung-Chi Kuo, Apple is currently on track to deliver the iPhone Fold in the second half of 2026. If the foldable iPhone is to arrive next year, it will likely appear as part of the iPhone 18 series, which is being tipped to feature a significant advancement in chipset technology. The A20 chip expected to be used in these iPhones is said to be the first based on a 2nm architecture. What does that mean? Smaller transistors, allowing companies to pack more into a chip, resulting in significant performance enhancements. If these reports are true, the iPhone Fold might well be one of the most powerful foldables on the market. We're also seeing some enticing iPhone Fold specs being rumored, as well-known leaker Digital Chat Station claims the phone will feature a 7.58-inch inner display, titanium frame and dual 48MP rear cameras. While the screen size would be a little smaller than the Oppo Find N5 (8.12 inches), Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (8 inches) and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (7.6 inches), it might mean we get a compact and pocketable device which doesn't feel big or bulky. As for the cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has two 48MP rear cameras, alongside a third 12MP telephoto lens, which suggests the iPhone Fold could well have some serious photography chops. But if even the best foldable phones don't float your boat, 2027 may have something even cooler in store for us. 2027: the all-screen iPhone 19 2027 will mark iPhone's 20th anniversary, and word on the street is Apple might be cooking up something pretty special to mark the occasion. Notable Apple reporter, Mark Gurman, said in one of his recent Power On newsletters for Bloomberg, that Apple is working on an iPhone 19 with no notch (the physical Dynamic Island) and virtually no bezels around the screen – giving us a fully edge-to-edge display. To make the all-screen iPhone a reality it will have to pack in some new tech (for Apple), with an under-screen Face ID and selfie camera for a truly uninterrupted screen experience. These reports make the iPhone 17 series sound a little less appealing. Sure a new cooling system and funky rear camera layout will be interesting, plus iOS 26 will make it feel like a bigger upgrade, but 2026 and 2027 is where the iPhone is set to revolutionize the market… again. New iPhone Fold leak reveals cameras, but does it beat the Galaxy Z Fold 7?

We're also learning about the foldable iPhone's dual 48MP rear cameras for the first time. The new leak once again cites the use of a specialized composite metal for the hinge and titanium for the premium iPhone's frame. Chatter around the foldable iPhone is gaining momentum, with Apple recently ordering flexible display panels for the premium foldable that is expected to arrive in 2026. Along with this development, rumors, including tentative specifications of the iPhone Fold, have also started to flow in. Reliable leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS) shared fresh bits about the display on the iPhone Fold (or, whatever it may be officially called) and the cameras, indicating how the device could fare in comparison with other book-style foldables, especially the Galaxy Z Fold — the generation following the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — due in 2026. Consistent with previous rumors, the foldable iPhone's inner display is expected to have a 14.1:10 aspect ratio with a 2,713 x 1,920 pixels resolution. However, contrary to DCS' previous reports that indicated a 7.8-inch inner display, the latest rumor suggests a slightly smaller 7.58-inch panel for the foldable. If true, this would be noticeably smaller than the 8.2-inch display we expect to see on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Apple also approaches a more rectangular layout, similar to iPad models, compared to the squarish design on foldables from brands such as Samsung, OPPO, HONOR, etc. The leaker also hints at dual 48MP cameras expected to be seen on the iPhone Fold, presumably, on the back side. The utility of each of these cameras and the resolutions of the two front-facing cameras — on the cover screen as well as the one rumored to be under the inner display — remain unclear. The iPhone 16 Pro also features two 48MP cameras, including the primary and ultrawide, alongside a 12MP periscope. We suspect Apple might ditch the periscope to save space on the Fold, though it's too early to comment on whether the 48MP sensors are the same as those on the iPhone 16 Pro or different. In comparison, Samsung is likely to deploy a 200MP camera on the upcoming Fold 7. DCS reiterates the existence of a mysterious 'amorphous metal glass composite' (from Google Translate) material, previously also referred to as a 'liquid metal,' that will be used in the hinge, along with titanium for the external frame. As per previous rumors, the foldable iPhone is set to have an introductory price between $2,000 and $2,500. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also recently stated that while the foldable is expected to launch in the second half of 2026, supposedly alongside the iPhone 18 series, this won't be an annual release, and Apple expects to sell the same model for multiple years, given its higher pricing compared to the candy bar iPhone models. Apple's foldable iPhone moves closer to a 2026 launch with a production goal that might surprise you
Unless you've been living under a rock for the last year or so, or you only follow the news on our little website here when the latest iPhone generation and iOS version are expected to drop, odds are that you already know a thing or two about Apple's ambitious foldable market-joining intentions. But unless you're more knowledgeable about what goes on behind Cupertino's closed doors a year ahead of a new product launch than the likes of Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo, you probably still have more questions than answers on the first-ever iPhone Fold (which may or may not be called that). That's because Kuo himself remains unable to make many firm predictions on things like specs, features, and prices in a new social media "update" rounding up some fresh information from the inside. That's probably the juiciest detail revealed by the almost always reliable rumormonger and tech industry analyst on his official X account this week, but the number isn't as impressive as some of you might think... or as low as others are likely to consider. That's because Apple doesn't reportedly expect to sell between 15 and 20 million units of its mysterious Galaxy Z Fold 7 alternative in a matter of weeks or months, instead setting this production target to cover an entire "2-3 year lifecycle." That would result in a very humble annual sales total compared to a conventional new iPhone while still looking likely to eclipse the combined figures of something like the Z Fold 7 , Z Fold 8, and Z Fold 9. It's too soon to know for sure, but the iPhone Fold is very likely to resemble the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The latter is arguably a more fair comparison than an analysis against the non- foldable iPhone 17 or iPhone 18, and in case you're wondering, last year's Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is estimated to have sold in under 2.5 million copies during its first six months of availability. That makes a 15 to 20 million unit iPhone Fold goal pretty realistic for Apple, and not at all shameful or modest, especially considering its extravagant rumored price point. It remains to be seen, however, if Samsung will be able to actually manufacture the 15 to 20 million foldable screens required by Apple and in line with Apple's quality standards. That's right, the two arch-rivals are widely believed to be collaborating on this project, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone the least bit familiar with the inner workings of today's mobile industry. If someone can pull off the "nearly invisible" crease Apple is insisting on for its rookie foldable effort, that's definitely Samsung. But even the makers of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 are only expected to manufacture around 7 or 8 million ultra-high-quality panels a year for the first-gen " iPhone Fold " starting in 2026, which means early supply might not be enough to handle your demand. That's probably the most disappointing thing Kuo could have said in closing of his latest forecast, and unfortunately, that means we can't be sure of, well, anything about Apple's first foldable iPhone just yet. Yes, a 2026 release in at least a few million units seems more and more likely by the day, but it's still not guaranteed. A price point of over $1,800 or even $2,000, meanwhile, is just about etched in stone, but not completely. The key specifications are even harder to pinpoint, although a number of credible (and semi-credible) rumors have hinted at a primary display size of close to 8 inches and a secondary screen of around 5.5 inches. Of course, some recent gossip called for a "normal" yearly upgrade schedule, highlighting Kuo's main point today that Cupertino's plans have "yet to be finalized", remaining "subject to change prior to the official project kickoff." The kickoff time, by the way, could be "late" Q3 2025 or "early" Q4 2025 as far as product assembly is concerned, so you should probably expect a flood of new rumors (many of which might contradict existing speculation) at any point between September and November of this year. The iPhone Fold's crushingly slow development may have just hit another roadblock — but it's not all bad news
Just when you thought Apple might be making some headway with its foldable iPhone development, a new report comes out to make us doubt everything. Analyst Ming Chi Kuo claims that while iPhone manufacturers Foxconn are going to "kick off the project" later this year, the specs are still not fully confirmed. The good news is Kuo claims the foldable screen is "one of the few components with finalized specifications." Considering the display has reportedly been a key factor in the iPhone Fold's slow development, that point is a little bit more comforting. According to Kuo, Samsung Display will be building somewhere between 7 and 8 million foldable panels for iPhone Fold. Though Kuo points out that since 2026 production is only going to be a few months, actual panel shipments may not be at full capacity. Apple itself is said to have ordered 15-20 million foldable iPhones, which the analyst expects will cover the duration of the phone's 2-3 year lifecycle. While the number sounds big, it isn't a whole lot when compared to the likes of the iPhone 16 — which had an estimated 84 million units produced in the second half to 2024. Why so low? Kuo speculates that it could be the phone's premium pricing affecting demand, which may be why Apple would keep it around for a little longer than your standard iPhone models. One thing Kuo notes is that all plans are still subject to change, and will stay that way until the iPhone Fold project officially kicks off. Which means it could end up being delayed again, especially if Apple takes issue with some of the other components available. Another delay isn't outside the realms of possibility but considering how much time Apple is taking — possibly down to its own perfectionism — I think it's about time the company just got it over and done with.
